taking sides: releasing just full-length albums and not much else vs. sloppy discographies full of EPs and compilation tracks, etc.

sub-question: should it be easy for non-completist fans to get everything they'd want to hear just by buying the major releases?

BOREDOMS TO THREAD

dean? (deangulberry), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind buying a bunch of eps, but hunting down compilation tracks is a pain in the ass.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

It used to be fun to collect stray compilation tracks and soundtrack appearances and tribute album appearances and singles and b-sides and so forth, and make your own mix-tapes of them, but nowadays all that shit gets compiled into an official release, 100% of the time, so there's really no point to buying any of it.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

How about those bastards who release a spate of EPs and 7-inches only to include all the material on their next full-length?

Huck, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, LCD soundsystem better not do that

Eyeballs OTM...if it's all just building up to a b-sides comp, then what's the point, really? (that said, I generally look forward to and enjoy when my favorite bands put together b-sides comps)

Scrappy and incoherent discographies rule, as long as the artists in question don't release everything as a compilation. I salute all efforts to thwart completism.

Pinback is up there in the leaders list for EPs and side projects all that.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Depends on whether the performer in question is an ACTIVE recording artist or someone who quit making records (or died) a long time ago. Also depends on whether you enjoy being a collector or you truly just like the music.

I think it's the air of mystery around a band that you'll likely never own everything by. You might never have a handle on them, because there's always something more out there. search Mountain Goats, Saint Etienne, His Name is Alive.

Then again, concise, complete discographies are really nice to have lined up next to each other, search Steely Dan.

Oh God. I am disgustingly particular about this.

Only full-lengths. No EPs unless you're just starting out and trying to get signed; in that case, all songs from the EP must appear on the proper debut. You can have singles, on the condition that ALL b-sides get compiled into a full-length every three LPs. No random remixes floating around. Just do an "X Vs. Y" all-remix album and get it out of your system. Etc.

Speaking for myself, scrappy and incoherent discographies tend to encourage completism. Makes it much more fun.

EPs good, especially if said band doesn't have enough material for a full-length & doesn't want to fill it out with garbage ..

Singles where 3 of 4 tracks are on the long-player, with one obscure b-side .. aaargh! If they were $1, it'd be cool - but to pay $6 for one track ... crime.

Because of all their compilation contributions and EP's, I still haven't heard everything that Pavement's done, and I'm done with the whole searching, searching, searching and buying $20 Japanese bootlegs just to get one song. So in any case, I may well be in my fifties and still hearing "new" songs by one of my favorite bands from my youth. All these stray tracks are just gifts that keep on giving.
