Other than that dumb fuck Vincent Gallo and I-Don't-Like-to-Think Britney Spears, are there any other contemporary artists that are pro-Bush?

Or did they all have their heyday in the 70s/80s? The New York Times sez Lynard Skynard, .38 Special (appropriate), ZZ Top and the Charlie Daniels Band will all be playing events come convention time. Of course, we saw Vanilla Ice's picture recently, as well.

I ask so I can boycott and talk shite about them too.

frankE (frankE), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

er...Lynyrd Skynyrd.

frankE (frankE), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

yes plenty

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

there are plenty. kid rock. jessica simpson. steven tyler (does he count as contemporary?). lotsa people in nashville. probably lotsa people who have chosen not to talk about it publicly. and lotsa others i'm too tired to look up or recall.

Aren't Gene Simmons from Kiss and Phil Anselmo from Can'tBeara pro-Bush?

piers (piers), Thursday, 26 August 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Given that lineup, they really are gunning for the NASCAR dad demographic, aren't they? I can't imagine patrician Republicans like Cheney or Papa Bush getting down to "Pearl Necklace."

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 26 August 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

fugazi!?

Dan I., Thursday, 26 August 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

steven tyler AND alice cooper? Are there any aging, emaciated drag queens NOT supporting Bush in '04?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 August 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Fugazi's new video "My America, Right Or Wrong" comes out in mid-October. It's directed by Jon Wurster and features them driving around in tanks.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 August 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

They're not touring though, due to the Minor Threat/Rites Of Spring Dischord reunion mega-tour that starts around Xmas.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 August 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i just made that up (maybe in some alexander cockburn sense they do)

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 26 August 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

When asked why he supports the current prez after loudly protesting the elder's Bush's war in Iraw, Ian MacKaye commented "sounds like someone's forgotten about a little thing called 9/11."

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 August 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

And leave us not forget the C+W artists. Plenty of them dig the great Satan.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 26 August 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

not really - the only big name the gop was able to draw for the convention was brooks and dunn.

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 26 August 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

AGAIN? Brooks & Dunn played last time (and the one that doesn't sing was kinda funny twirling around all Andrew Ridgeley-like in his tight jeans).

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 August 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

this almost swayed my vote

or is that interpreting "contemporary" too loosely?

Can't believe that about Fugazi.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 26 August 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

like I've ever wanted to silence the insanity. But enough about that, I just found out that Big Black is reuniting for a swing-state "Kerry Is A Pussy" tour. All the original members are involved except Roland, who will be replaced by Kenny Aaronoff.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 August 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Newsmakers | Bush twins to be back in the public eye

By K. Heller

Inquirer Staff Writer

After four years of keeping relatively quiet and out of boldface type, First Twins Jenna and Barbara Bush are going to shake it like a Polaroid picture at the GOP convention in N.Y.C. The recent college grads will host the opening bash Sunday, Aug. 29, at Roseland with Outkast's sartorially splendid Andre 3000, Stephen Baldwin (the shy, Republican Baldwin), Barret Swatek (7th Heaven), Angie Harmon (Law & Order, Neutrogena) and defensive back hubby Jason Sehorn (no longer a Giant, now a Ram), and Bo "Still a 10" Derek.

Jen and Bar also may pop up at a gay wedding event next month, the New York Daily News reports, when their eyebrow waxer Erwin Gomez celebrates his marital vows with partner James Packard. The twins have expressed support for the couple, who wed in San Francisco last spring. Gay marriage is firmly opposed by their father, President Bush, who did not approve this item.

chuck, Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't care WHAT this party was for, I have a hard time believing Andre would be seen at a party where the most famous person is a Baldwin brother.

eyebrow waxer?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a lesson with Kenny Aaronoff once. He was wearing those exact same fucking glasses.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 26 August 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Andre was at the Democratic Convention, I have a *really* hard time believing he would open up Dubya Co.s ceremonial ass-reaming of the nation.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 26 August 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus christ, Andre.

STEPHEN BALDWIN NOOOOOOOOOOO

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 26 August 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, we just had this big Luis Palau God-fest thingy called the "Twin Cities Fest" in St. Paul....there was preachin', Christian rockin', and extreme Christian skateboarding (no shit!) to be had by all....

anyway, I saw Steven Baldwin on local TV news being interviews....he's a big Bible banger these days apparently....I saw that he was starring one of those straight to DVD but probably scarily popular Christian "thriller" movies too recently...must've "seen the light" (or seen a paycheck in what I imagine is the increasingly lucrative world of Xian entertainment since his Hollywood career went in the shitter)...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 26 August 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I still think the Andre thing is just a rumor. On another thread, someone said they heard he was participating in an anti-GOP documentary about black voters being denied their rights.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 26 August 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

the first image that comes to mind when I think of Andre going to the GOP convention is Cleavon Little riding into Rock Ridge.

Andre was at the Democratic Convention, I have a *really* hard time believing he would open up Dubya Co.s ceremonial ass-reaming of the nation.

Me too. I found this:

The GOP's Star-Spangled Party Plans
By Richard Leiby,
Washington Post
Wednesday, August 18, 2004; Page C03

When worlds collide: Though a culture war flares regularly between the showbiz community and the Bush administration, GOP operatives are striving mightily to add a Hollywood sheen to the Republican National Convention. Yesterday a convention planner proudly informed us that those swingin' twins Jenna and Barbara Bush will host "R: The Party" Aug. 29 at Manhattan's Roseland Ballroom, with a celeb invite list including (drumroll, please): born-again Christian and actor Stephen Baldwin, known among Republicans as "the good Baldwin"; actress Barret Swatek of "7th Heaven"; Angie Harmon, late of "Law and Order," and her husband, former NFL cornerback Jason Sehorn;Aaron Buerge of "The Bachelor"; country music vets the Gatlin Brothers; the ever-lovely Bo Derek; and our favorite pro wrassler of all time, Ric Flair.

But where's the A-list, the Ben Afflecks and P. Diddys? we asked. Our source, who asked not to be identified, rejoined: "After a couple of minutes at Roseland Ballroom, you'll be asking yourself, 'Who's P. Diddy?' "

And, it turns out, both Mr. Diddy and Andre 3000 of OutKast (who were all over Boston with the Dems) have applied for credentials to shoot documentaries and TV specials from the convention. Their ap
plications are "in process," the official revealed

frankE (frankE), Thursday, 26 August 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaron Buerge of "The Bachelor"

friends they've just bought themselves a victory

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 26 August 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I still prefer the "Jenna may not be the one, but if not, she is the prototype" theory.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 August 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Alice Cooper speaks out

Shock-rock legend Alice Cooper calls rock stars campaigning for Democrat John Kerry treasonous morons.

The 56-year-old Cooper says he was disgusted to learn the likes of Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, R.E.M., Sheryl Crow, James Taylor and Dave Matthews were hitting the road for a series of concerts designed to help defeat President Bush.

"To me, that's treason," Cooper told the Canadian Press. "I call it treason against rock 'n' roll because rock is the antithesis of politics. Rock should never be in bed with politics."

"When I was a kid and my parents started talking about politics, I'd run to my room and put on the Rolling Stones as loud as I could. So when I see all these rock stars up there talking politics, it makes me sick.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 27 August 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Gallo is quite intelligent. But if he went to college instead of running away to NYC at its pinnacle as an urban paradise, he would not likely have turned out the way he did.

Star Hustler, Saturday, 28 August 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

For all I keep hearing about Gallo being intelligent, I have seen very little proof in any of his works or interviews.

David Allen (David Allen), Saturday, 28 August 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

NOT foghat ... (who had earlier been rumored to be touring as a pro-bush outfit):

"I have no idea where they got that," Foghat drummer Roger Earl tells PAGE SIX (of The New York Post). "Foghat are not supporters of George Bush, and we're certainly not going on the road with him." In fact, Earl seemed downright smitten with the John Kerry-favoring Springsteen tour. "I'd like to see Bruce Springsteen and Bonnie Raitt for president. We'd go on tour with them in a minute!" The Long Island resident also offered up Foghat's services to entertain the troops overseas. "We support the troops 110 percent," he said. "We'd love to go over there and play for them, but no one has asked us yet." ...

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, there's a song on Soldier called "I'm a Conservative," that's I'm relatively certain is not meant as an ironic statement.

There are a few interviews to support it as well, though I'm hard-pressed to cite any.

gimme danger full of raw power
this book is wild, right up there with victor bockris's books on lou reed and patti smith. joe ambrose has taken the bull by the horns and made a serious effort to understand Iggy Pop, career drug fiend, enthusiastic pro-Regagan Republican, and the maker of some of the finest ever punk rock records. as a lifelong fan of the Igster i was taken aback by some of the less acceptable facts in this elegantly written book but i was still glad to know those facts. i know joe ambrose and regard him as being a generally good and reliable writer with three great novels out.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

So, apparently, the black eyed peas and the red hot chili peppers have played at the republican convention.

reo, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

they seem to be going for some sort of hip veggie tray but safe enough so the mom's will dance to it motif.

i mean, they showed clips of middle aged women dancing.

what is this all about?

there was a special report about this on abc this morning.

they went on about country music and contempory christian music and about how successful it is in this country. they also mentioned a popular latin singer who was invited to perform at the republican convention to potentially snag latin swing voters.

reo, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Neil Young said he liked Reagan and may have been serious about it at the time, but 1. he also used that stance (and anti-gay comments he included at the time) in his then-feud with David Geffen and CSN, 2. reportedly got read the riot act by his wife, and 3. has since supported Democratic candidates and pro-gay and anti-AIDS charities.

By which I mean I'm not convinced on Iggy, especially considering how outspoken his current bassist is. It would be no surprise to learn that Iggy said he liked Reagan because it pissed people off.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah that's entirely possible, but when you consider where iggy's from his conservatism does seem plausible, like it's a deeply rooted thing. beneath its liberal college town veneer, ann arbor is a small town in michigan farm country. especially in the 60s, ann arbor was less the detroit exurb is it today and more of an isolated hamlet. and hey i'm from the midwest and actually lived in ann arbor for more than four years, so it's no pejorative when i say it's a basically a hick town dominated by some redneck attitudes. like lots of folks, maybe iggy is reverting to type as he gets older.
and while his current bassist is an outspoken lefty, his current (and former) guitarist definitely leans the other way, a longtime collector of guns & nazi uniforms who sported a "nuke iran" button during the hostage crisis in 79/80. none of which makes their music less enjoyable, though an outright bush endorsement sure would.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)
