just respinning 'nothing to fear' mix that steinski sorted for Solid Steel and its by far one of the best cut-n-paste/hiphop/funk mixes going .. never ceases to bring a smile to my face, and along with his sugarhill mix i feel the man should be in demand a lot more .. or is he ? just that the man dont like making records ..
not a lot of info going on : http://steinski.com/ shame. cos the man literally changed my musical listening taste (Motorcade sped on). and i dont really have that much with his name on it.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

the megamix he did recently of that third unheard connecticut hip-hop stuff was really good

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

the Warm Up website spells it "Stienski" which scares me cuz it might be this guy instead

comme personne (common_person), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

(All Events located in Denver unless otherwise noted)

phew!

comme personne (common_person), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I like 'Nothing to Fear,' too. I've also wondered at the smallness-yet-greatness of his catalog.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

well dude is an ad man, not a professional musician (in the entertainment sense) as such

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

He's got an album out this year too: STEINSKI'S BURNIN' OUT OF CONTROL: THE SUGAR HILL MIX. He play the part of this dumbo TV anchorman telling us about Sugar Hill's old building burning down, and all this stuff flying around, and he mixes all these great songs, full-length too, and a lot of 'em are real rarities (including some that are actually pre-Sugar Hill, but re-released by them in the late 70s. I eamn, this goes back! But sounds great. It's not as out there as NO FEAR (which I also love), but it's a trip.(Not a standard Sugar Hill's Greatest Hits-type approach, at all.) If don't see it on Amazon on bn.com, try midheaven.com or aquarius or turntablelabs (might be turntablelab, singular, been a while since I've gone there, but all those got good selection, good customer service, in my experience).

Don Allred, Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

aint the anchorman cut chemist ? (cd is downstairs and cant be arsed to check .. ) but yes it is mighty good stuff.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

actually any of those antitode mixes are ace, paul nice's especially. like pokemon - "gotta catch em all."
time for sleep. g'night people.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Steinski's a seriously good guy--I mean, just _unbelievably_ nice--and he'd rather do like one track every two or three years than risk wackness. "The Motorcade Sped On" is indeed a mindblower; also very very fond of "It's Up To You" and "We'll Be Right Back."

D. Wolk OTM

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 27 August 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

He does (on website) warn us about counterfeits, not just boots: there are more "Lessons" out there than *he* ever taught (although I suppose some of them might be worthwhile, long as you know what you're not getting?). His motto best spoke by John Lee Hooker : "Nothin but the best, later for the garbage."

Don, Saturday, 28 August 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

So he's spinning on WFMU now? Anybody got tapes??

Don, Saturday, 28 August 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

sandboxautomatic has the Sugarhill mix CD.

Sang Freud (jeff_s), Saturday, 28 August 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man. Checked bn.com for info on that Third Unheard megamix (cos that's the best way I've found to tap the "revamped" allmusic.com) Didn't see that mix, but clicked on the name of Third's compiler, Egaon, to see what else he's done. My wallet wishes I hadn't.

Don, Saturday, 28 August 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Egon is the guy's name I clicked on!Sorree!

don, Sunday, 29 August 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

to answer my own thread :

some new mixes are online for those that enquire via his new site.

So hot.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

Coldcut never even touched the awesomeness of that song.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

Who was Mass Media anyway? His AV club?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

I totally remember that jam from when Weird Al picked videos for a few hours on MTV in '88.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

"Not enough can be said about how nice he is."

am beginning to find this out for myself via email ..
i mean all those years ago, Motorcade completely changed my outlook on the way music could be made and sound, and here i am getting all clear to ask the man some questions.
and a headphone listen to 'Nothing to Fear' is just something else.
yes i am aware that i'm a gushing fan, despite only having a handful of records with his name on.

mark e, Thursday, 1 March 2007 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

Not enough can be said about how nice he is.

one of my liftime highlights (so far that is) ended up being the fact i was allowed to hang out with the great man last year.
i mean, fuck ! i went for a meal with steinski.
i'm just hanging on in there for Illegal Art to ship some of the new 2cd set over uk-side.

new steinski comp/retrospective

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

did anyone else follow his radio show last year? 17 hour-long mixes on a different theme or genre each week, with Stein giving enthusiasms, info and autobiographical musings along the way. Library music one week, stand-up comedy another, New Orleans brass bands a third. I've had the last three sitting on my ipod for six months now, because I don't want to listen to them and have no more to look forward too...
