the title track is pretty great, and there's some bright spots here and there, but I wouldnt pick it up either.. granted my experience with this album is hearing it BLASTED in a friend's explorer so take it with a grain of salt.

"1112" is good. And so is "Hip Hop Fury". But you can definitely live without it (esp. since I think the latter is on Wu-Chronicles II.

haven't listened to it in ages, remember it being pretty underwhelming....his lastest one though Legend of the Liquid Sword is one of the most underrated rap discs lately IMO....

If you can find it cheap (and being on MCA/Universal, you should be able to), pick it up. The album is a grower. When it first came out, I only liked three songs on it (the first three non-skit ones), but it was pretty much the only thing I listened to last weekend. I think it's really under-rated, but it's by no means an essential album.

yeah, pick it up. it's his 2nd best. and if you just love the *tone* of GZA's voice the way I do, you won't be disapponmited. yeah, really good. beats are his 2nd best since liquid too. also, best skits on a hip hop album eva!
don'ty trust Yanc3y: he nominated about 34 of the top 50 alt-rock songs as really good.

I think you could take about half of Beneath the Surface and half of Legend of Liquid Swords and make a nice cd comp. Did anyone catch him on his recent tour? He was pretty great, he even asked the crowd if anyone was familiar with his pre-WuTang album Words From The Genius, funny shit.
