RTX - "Speed to Roam". Terrible!

RTX mp3 available at the Drag City site. To be fair, it sounds like I expected it to sound - boring. I am a bit surprised at how terrible the band, especially the guitarist (whoever that may be) is. Of course there was no way in hell Jennifer would ever find anyone with 1/4 the skill and innovation of Hagerty, but why a band this bad?

Needless to say, this doesn't bode well for the rest of the LP, but then what did I expect? The Howling Hex it's not.

djd, Thursday, 26 August 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

what's next? Dead Kennedys without Jello Biafra? fuck's sake.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 27 August 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey - that's not half bad at all!! It could have been at lot worse. I was expecting a trainwreck. Sure the guitarist ain't no Neil, but this is kind of fun. Great to hear JH's voice again.

NOW WHERE IS MY LIMITED EDITION HOWLING HEX LP???!!!

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Friday, 27 August 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Not having an analog set-up at the moment, I've bypassed the ltd. edition Howling Hex lps. What's the story with those? Do they plan to release all of this stuff on CD eventually, or are they considered rough sketches/works in progress for the next "official" Howling Hex release? I hope it all comes out in digital format soon, as I love Hagerty and hate to miss out on anything he does.

djd, Friday, 27 August 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not bad. it actually grew on me pretty quick. the soulful-ness of it. and the little bits of ambient seague into and at the end of the track make me curious what the rest of the album will be like.

rssgnld's, Friday, 27 August 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

this isn't all that bad...

Russ (Russ), Friday, 27 August 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, this is really good. It's fucking way better than those incredibly mediocre later Royal Trux records like Accelerator and Pound for Pound. The mix on it is weird, but I'm into its organic-ness. I don't understand the urge to criticize the guitar player. He doesn't even play a solo on it and executes the rhythm parts fine. It's just a weird mix.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 27 August 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

RTX fans hassling a weird mix!

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish this Yes song wasn't so long

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Bite your tongue. Accelator kicks ass. And Yes should never be mentioned in connected with Royal Trux unless the words "twin" "infinitive" and "topographic" "oceans" enter in somehow.

nmh, Friday, 27 August 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck, I assumed he'd said 'Veterans'(which I love but I can see failing it if that partic RTX isn't for you). 'Accelerator' is the best record ever, after all.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

nmh, you're aware that Wishbone Ash is one of Neil's all-time favorite groups?? I mean, get real. I fucking guarantee you that Neil owns every single classic-era Yes LP. GUARANTEE YOU. Anyway, any sensible man would.

Yeah, the guitar player pretty much does his job admirably -- not much to criticize, except for not being neil. Something about the guitar reminded me of Faster Pussycat, actually.

And seriously, Tim -- dissing Accelerator? for shame...

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Friday, 27 August 2004 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Speed to Roam is an okay band.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 27 August 2004 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, I said that I LIKE the mix.

Yeah, I wasn't into the whole Trux-as-hacks, just-keepin'-on-keepin' on bizness.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 27 August 2004 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry I was like agreeing w/you saying |it's just a weird mix deal w/it| or something, y'know. RTX fans should of course be DELIGHTED at the prospect of a weird mix. I'm buying this, I don't care how bad it is, cover is MELTING SKULLS

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 27 August 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

melding skulls?

rssgnld's, Friday, 27 August 2004 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

any news on howling hex three?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 27 August 2004 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like the MP3 a lot. And to repeat what's already been said, I was going to buy the album on the basis of the cover, anyway.

Do they plan to release all of this stuff on CD eventually, or are they considered rough sketches/works in progress for the next "official" Howling Hex release? I hope it all comes out in digital format soon

They'd better not come out on CD, given how much we've had to pay for the vinyl. These single LPs have been aboot $5 more than the double vinyl version of The Howling Hex, and persumably have been so pricey to offset no CD to help recoup costs. As for digital format, it does say on the first record that purchase of the LP gives the owner right to copy/distribute it digitally.

Vic Funk, Friday, 27 August 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I paid about $15 US for Vol. 2, just to show off. Hoping to do the same on Vol. 3. Anyone who has a spare Vol. 1, etc, I guess

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 27 August 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Howling Hex Vol. 3 is good: one half twin infinitives-style complexity theory vignettes, one half americana duets with uncredited female singer. Solid.

sexyDancer, Friday, 27 August 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

sexyDancer, Friday, 27 August 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha - I too e-mailed Drag City an apologetic "I'm gettin' paranoid" e-mail yesterday, since the LP appeared as "Out Now" on their site and mine hasn't shown. (I'm glad I wasn't the only one to e-mail 'em - I've been afraid they'd retaliate for my pestering by cutting me off altogether - "No Hex for you!")

It's good to know that the LPs are just now showing up at other people's doorsteps - that means mine is hopefully on its way too.

(Hey, Diamond - what's a good Wishbone Ash LP to check out?)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 27 August 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Here are the Aquarius reviews of the first, self-titled one and Argus:

WISHBONE ASH Argus (MCA/Decca) cd 12.98
Back on list 126, I (Allan) wrote about my belated discovery of the greatness that is Wishbone Ash's self-titled 1970 debut. Well, now it's about time to follow that up with a rave review of another Wishbone Ash record, this being the newly remastered and expanded edition of their third album, 1972's "Argus". Giving this a few listens, I've come to the conclusion that while their first album is certainly somewhat more of a "heavy rock" outing (think Cream meets Thin Lizzy), "Argus" is equally great, and is actually destined to be one of my ALL TIME favorite albums! Seriously, I'm becoming kinda obsessed with listening to this, with its absolutely gorgeous, gentle melodies and its extended instrumental workouts. Some internet investigation reveals that I'm not alone -- this record is in fact considered by many fans to be Wishbone Ash's absolute masterpiece. They just got everything right on this release, from the evocative cover photo of an ancient sentry to the achingly beautiful, stirring music. I can't get enough of the three-part vocal harmonies, the dual guitar leads, or the melancholic power of the riffs. Favorite tracks include the beautiful British folk of "Leaf And Stream", the anthemic "Warrior", and the shoulda-been-a-pop-hit "Sometime World". The whole album has a timeless vibe. Maybe you could call their style "rural progressive" rock? It's melodic, mystical and complex in ways that make it sound simple.
In addition to being remastered, this new 30th anniversary edition includes three bonus tracks: the entire "Live From Memphis" promo-only EP. These live-on-the-radio versions of "Phoenix" (from their debut) and "Jail Bait" and "The Pilgrim" (from their second album, "Pilgrimage") add another half-hour to the disc, being even more jammed-out and epic than the original studio cuts! So even if you already have the old cd of "Argus", you should consider replacing it with this disc, these bonus tracks are worth it! The loud-soft dynamics and interlocking instrumental loveliness of the live "Pilgrim" are positively 'post-rock', but better of course.
Truly 'classic' rock that needs to be rediscovered. My advice for this week: pick up that

WISHBONE ASH s/t (MCA) cd 10.98
This is one of those classic rock '70s bands that I (Allan) had always heard of (their claim to fame was pioneering the twin guitar harmony thing, inspiring Thin Lizzy and later Iron Maiden) but had never heard... Nobody was like, "Dude! Wishbone Ash! You gotta hear 'em!". Still, I've been curious, and finally a copy of this album, Wishbone Ash's 1970 debut fell into my hands. And yep, it's pretty great. I've investigated further, and it might be that this was really their best album. It's like a combination of heavy British blues-rock a la Cream with harmony guitars that, yes, sound like Thin Lizzy (or The Champs). The vocals sound kinda like Greg Lake of King Crimson/ELP, but they do some vocal harmonies that sound more old-timey, Brit-folk style. It's not super heavy though it has its moments, it's definitely not metal, but it IS hard rock, with lengthy songs (including two that exceed ten minutes) featuring almost-Allmans-like guitar jamming. Great stuff, if you're like me and dig songs with titles like "Lady Whiskey" and "Queen of Torture". While not a discovery on par with finding out that Uriah Heep was actually pretty amazing (allow me -- "Dude! Uriah Heep! Go get 'Look At Yourself'!! The one with the mirror on the cover, you've seen it a thousand times. It's really great!") but I'm glad to now to be hip to Wishbone Ash, this album at least. Recommended to those into the

Argus! That's the really good one. Well, actually it's the only one I've heard. But it is really good! And quite pretty at times. You can probably scare up an old used LP of it fairly cheaply...

I remember an old issue of CMJ when they used to do that thing where they asked people what 5 records they were currently digging, and NMH listed

Joao Gilberto's white album
Lee Konitz live at the Half Note
Larry Young's complete Blue Note recordings on Mosaic
Pierre Boulez's Pli Selon Pli
U-Roy Version of Wisdom

Did you ever see that page on the old royaltrux.com, where they posted a list of what were supposedly all the tapes rolling around in their tour van? I printed it out and saved it somewhere; whether true or not, it was such a great and funny touchstone on the Royal Trux aesthetic. (I can only remember Bob Dylan's "Planet Waves" and Guns 'N Roses' "The Spaghetti Incident?")

Ian, get the third album, the second self-titled one. You can see if you want to follow the direction that they took from there.

Between yesterday afternoon and my checking this morning, the third LP has gone out of print, so if people haven't ordered yet and want a copy, they better hope their local store picked it up.

Vic Funk, Friday, 27 August 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way, I'm still eager for tips on other stuff reminiscent of the "1974 Cadillac El Dorado Sedan" song, as requested on this thread. I bought the Black Oak Arkansas LP that Dave Q. suggested, and while it's groovy, it's not quite what I had in mind.

(Maybe I'm being too insistent on finding something that doesn't exist, but the sound of that song is so "familiar" to me, yet I can't figure out what musical memories I'm drawing from when I listen to it and shiver with some kind of distant folk-memory recognition.)

Yeah Roger it's the same singer on "Return of the Third Tower" as the last one, she has two songs or so solo and a couple of duets/backups. Side one's as Sdancer said, loops incl his own old records and some recitations, pretty cool. Side two's sketchyish rock songs, incl at least a couple ("Wrong Ace" esp so far) about as good as anything I've heard him do. I'm stoked.

Reckless in Chicago still has it and Section 2, and does mailorder if anyone wants / needs em, but doesn't yet have.
According to the disc label of Section 2, "Rock-A-Doodle-Doo" was written by one Linda Lewis, which I've assumed is the name of the mystery female HH vocalist.

At the very least, this album is more unique and fucked up and affecting than ANY other rock album released this year. I love the production. It's beyond intense; feels like listening to Aerosmith while tripping on bad acid. Hopefully it won't just fade away into "retarded comeback album" status.. rock band needing lessons in fucking shit up could do a lot lot worse than listening to this album.

From royaltrux.com:

We get asked a lot: "What are you listening to these days?" Unless we have some preplanned answer that is suitably framed for some reason or other, we draw a blank and say: "Oh, lots of stuff."
Yesterday I was cleaning out the van and I found all of these cassette covers stuffed down in a seat pocket. The first thing we do when we buy a new cassettte is take the cover out of the case and chuck it because it gets in the way. Then we write the name of the cassette on the plastic case. It makes travel easier. I know we've listened to all of these, and they were all purchased on tour, mostly in truck stops, over the last six years.
