And who can remember their other hits including "Superfly Guy" and "Mantra for a State of Mind" ??

Another pop-House crossover that I got briefly obsessed with at the time. I own the 12" vinyl for "Theme From.." and "Hey Music Lover", and I have both the albums on cassette.
What's Mark Moore doing these days, anyway?

And S'Express ARE acid house. Listen to their first album "Original Soundtrack" to confirm!!!!! That album also has "Coma 2" which is allegedly the first ever ambient house track in existance.

And Eisbar, the song you are thinking of by Seona Dancing is called "More to Lose", and did you know that 1/2 of Seona Dancing was Ricky Gervais, the main star of the comedy series "The Office" ??

obligatory mention of the Fluffy Bagel mix of "Superfly Guy".
― HI, YOUR BAND! (Mackro Mackro), Sunday, 30 November 2008 02:44 (seventeen years ago)
also the William Orbit Spatial Expansion mix of "Music Lover". Best 80s remix ever?
― HI, YOUR BAND! (Mackro Mackro), Sunday, 30 November 2008 02:45 (seventeen years ago)
for the sake of accuracy and thus the integrity of ilm.
K.R.U.S.H. did 'house arrest' and 'the jack that house built' was by jack 'n' chill.

anyone remember the funky worm 'hustle (to the music)'?
― or something, Sunday, 30 November 2008 11:55 (seventeen years ago)
Yes. They were from Sheffield, weren't they? Think they were related in some way to later Warp stuff?
S'Express were classic and not all squelchy fun late 80s acid house positivism either - check out Coma off the first album or the Phillip Glass (!) remixes of Hey Music Lover.
― Treblekicker, Sunday, 30 November 2008 11:57 (seventeen years ago)
well sorta. S'Express, Bomb The Bass, etc. were all on Rhythm King/Mute, and Tim "bomb the bass" Simenon was the Kevin Bacon of 90s UK dance music. Or at least one of them.
― HI, YOUR BAND! (Mackro Mackro), Sunday, 30 November 2008 20:11 (seventeen years ago)
S-Express - Supafly Guy
Please reconsider! It is extremely funky for a house track.

I hated it at the time, but now I find it quite nice. Actually consider the next couple of singles to be better than "Theme..." though.
― Geir Hongro, Sunday, 30 November 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)
I'd never have predicted you liking this stuff Geir.
― moley, Sunday, 30 November 2008 22:42 (seventeen years ago)
Well, as I said, I didn't at the time. For the same reasons you wouldn't have expected me to like it. But getting into Orbital, Orb, Leftfield etc. in the late 90s also made me change my mind of late 80s house somewhat.
― Geir Hongro, Sunday, 30 November 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)
ok, did anyone hear this 12" from earlier in the year? being on kitsune doesn't bode especially well!
― fela cooties (haitch), Sunday, 30 November 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)
Hey Music Lover rules. But it wasn't until today I found out it has a Philip Glass remix!
― I am using your worlds, Monday, 1 December 2008 00:51 (seventeen years ago)
The Ph Glass remix bores me. Out of all the remixes I've heard I still like the original the most.
― Nomi Malone and Her Bloodstains (Stevie D), Monday, 1 December 2008 00:54 (seventeen years ago)
I didn't realize until recently that the female vocalist on "Hey Music Lover" was Billie Ray Martin!
― Tantrum The Cat, Monday, 1 December 2008 04:52 (seventeen years ago)
I remember buying the U.S. 8-track CD single for "Music Lover" at (oh shit) The Wherehouse. It was in a special display up front on sale for $3.99, in a long box format no less.
I think this has all the "Music Lover" remixes, including the Glass and Orbit ones... so if, uh, anyone's missing a track... wudge wudge nink nink.
Is this a common CD in the used bins at all?

the comeback track wasnt half bad:
sometimes i think they were one of the best *ideas* of a pop group ever. a quick-off-the-mark actual House band that fired a sucession of hysterical dance records into the top 5 while being made up of a mixture of black gay men, white germanic women, DJS, E'd up misfits, whatever, and a frontman who wore silver trousers and white faux fur. they made it all look like a *riot* the videos were funny and the popularity of the records has lasted 20 years!
― piscesx, Monday, 1 December 2008 07:05 (seventeen years ago)
Tantrum, that's not the one. The one I have has two more mixes and isn't a promo.

"When I was getting (the famous band he used to be in) together I used to play a lot of what's now known as classic rare groove records, and also a lot of James Brown, The Fatback Band. We just used to play at a couple of little clubs, me and a friend. We'd play things like Sly Stone, The Jackson Five, Sam And Dave, a load of Atlantic soul. I still listen to that stuff now, which is why I thought S'Express were the best group in the world when they were around because it was all pretty much based on Fatback and Sly Stone."
Can anyone guess who said that?
