Shamelessly reminisce about your wild Eurodance youth

We're talking about 2 Unlimited, E-type, Real McCoy, the first (and even more important, the second) Technotronic album, "Mr Vain" and "I like to move it move it." We're talking a teenhood devoted to "Dance Mix USA" releases, Fun Factory, Scatman, Hit 'n Hide, DJ Bobo, etc.
So now then. Did you enjoy "What is love" in a completely unironic way? What about Ice MC's "Dark Night Rider?" Did "Scatman's World" change your life?

Discuss.

Children behave
That's what they say when we're together
And watch how you play
They don't understand and so we're

Runnin' just as fast as we can
Holdin' on to one another's hand
Tryin' to get away into the night
And then you put your arms around me
And we tumble to the ground
And then you say

I think YOU'RE alone now
There doesn't seem to be anyone around
I think YOU'RE alone now
The beating of your heart
is the only sound

I was more of a Motiv8 man. (And it came to pass that Motiv8 begat Xenomania, and all was right with the world.)

I shamelesly love eurodance (in a completely unironic way), however I think the mid eighties, not early nineties, was its golden age. Not that I don't have a few favourites from the latter.

Do you guys remember "I wanna give you devotion" by Nomad? How about "It's a fine day by Opus III (I think it's one of my favourite songs ever)? Another would be "Bailando" by Spain's Paradisio. I could go on...

I was too young when it came out, but would the Lambada fit into the Eurodance category? There was a great speeded-up remix of it floating around on Grokster a few years back but I wonder what the original should be labeled as.

Slim Pickens (Slim Pickens), Friday, 27 August 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

NOMAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lambada is itself a genre that originated in Brazil (or Bolivia?). The "Lambada" song by Kaoma that everybody knows is, strictly speaking, not euro because it is brazillian. I heard it was very popular in Europe though...
oops...
I just read that Kaoma were French so whatever.

I think I mentioned on the "anonymous rappers on 90s dance tunes" thread that I lived something of a double life back then, on the one hand checking out raves and "cred" house nights every weekend, and on the other listening to (and secretly loving) Culture Beat et al on the radio just about every bloody day. It was quite funny to get to know a big underground record one month and hear the Euro homage / ripoff the next - a good lesson in how things cross over into the mainsteram. There was even a spate of jungle-tinged Euro during the jungle / d'n'b peak pf '95-'96.

My favorite tracks from that era would have to be as follows:

1) "Right In The Night" - Jam & Spoon
2) "Mr. Vain" - Culture Beat
3) "Dancing With An Angel" - Double You & Alexia
4) "Close To You" - Fun Factory
5) "Touch The Sky" - Cartouche
6) "River" - Public Art
7) "Memories" - Netwzerk
8) "Wrap Me Up" - Alex Party
9) "Show Me" - Kim Sanders
10) "More & More" - Captain Hollywood Project

Also, this stuff never really died here in Toronto and its surrounding 'burbs. Go to the right club in Mississauga or Burlington and you'll likely hear any one of these tracks played in its entirety with no irony whatsoever...

Was this the one with the rapper who kept going 'Take it down, take it down, take it down Mikey'?

Nomad featuring MC Mikee Freedom. It wasn't until years later that I realized the chorus was bitten from Ten City. Damn, I should have asked Byron Stingily about that when I got to meet him last week. Feh.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 27 August 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

'Take it down, take it down, take it down Mikey'

I always thought it was 'tickley dan, tickley dan'

Was 'eurodance' a name reserved in American for the shit stuff?

How long do we have to wait for the eurodance revival? Isnt it time yet?

Until then I will continue to listen to the exellent 2 cd eurodance collection that E-Type put together.

the problem is that people are still making eurodance, and selling it by the millions. a revival would be like defibrillating a zombie

one eye white, one eye black (FE7), Sunday, 16 October 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

give me some examples of what you could call eurodance that's being made today? and that is selling by the millions. perhaps you have a different definition of it than me.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Sunday, 16 October 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

I want a 3-disc Soul Jazz-produced retrospective of all of these hits. and i want it now.

ken taylrr never her (ken taylrr), Sunday, 16 October 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

crazy frog? schnappi? dragostea din tei? i dont have the sales figures but those were eurodance and pretty popular. xpost

one eye white, one eye black (FE7), Sunday, 16 October 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

I'll give you dragostea din tei although it's more (east)euro-pop than eurodance.

I will stand by my initial comment.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Sunday, 16 October 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

ok

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 16 October 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

scooter have been around since when it started. for the others, i havent heard any of them. do you know where I could listen to any of those groups?

Lovelace (Lovelace), Sunday, 16 October 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

)These aren't all number-one-hit-factories like in 1993, but at any given time there are always a few Eurodance tunes in the European singles charts.)

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 16 October 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Just listen to the Eurodance channel on di.fm, they play both the old and the new stuff.

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 16 October 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

MAXIMUM RESPECT TO THE EUROPEAN POSSE!

Lovelace (Lovelace), Monday, 17 October 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, I don't usually fish for a response like that, but I was curious to hear from some Euro fans. Yes, I did all the keyboards, programming, and production. The young lady in question is all of seventeen!
