Pretty sure there's no thread about this dude. His first album's good. Discuss. Or consider--What would be a nice companion album to go along with The Antique Glow? I don't like to get just one at a time.

there was this thread but no-one outside of SF had heard of him at the time I don't think. I know he's toured Australia since and played CMJ. still probably the best songwriter in SF!

He only has one other finished album, which is cool but not as good as Antique Glow. He has one almost finished, it is allegedly a psychedlic masterpiece, but I haven't heard it.

I swear I operated the search function. I have the Past Was Faster, and I'll take your word since you saw Yes (did I read that right?) that the Antique Glow is better. I would bet this guy has a psychedelic masterpiece or two in him.

Since I maybe have your attention, are there any other artists on the Telegraph label worth seeking? Church of Betty, say?

hahaha, I mean "I say yes". I didn't go see the bunnymen, which was the dillemma I was having. I should have.

The tour album they put out here in Oz is a rather excellent bunch of stuff for $10 - a few originals, couple of live tracks, couple of covers. It's got a version of "Mt. Fuji" that sounds he's being backed by Neu!

He also did a great CDR of covers of Echo & the Bunnymen's Crocodiles.

I hosted a live set with his band w/Spiral Stairs on WFMU last year, check out the archive if you get a chance:

I agree, one of the best SF music-makers. Should be more famous here than Australia!

three years pass...

Listening to the new one now. Filled to the brim with pop nuggets that reference Barrett/ Beach Boys/ Kinks but somehow retain their own distinctive flavor. I had been in the mood for something like this, without knowing it. Great find.

It's nice enough. Will have a review in next week's OC Weekly.

the records are pretty cool but i was bored by his live show on his last aus tour..

electricsound, Thursday, 7 February 2008 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

I'll look out for it. Have you listened to his earlier work ? Worth searching out ?

He has some connection to The Monks so his name is always coming up on their message board. I've been meaning to check him out for years but never got around to it.

i have the 'autumn glow' album, it's not up to the standard of the sub pop stuff but quite likeable in an ariel pinkish sort of way

electricsound, Friday, 8 February 2008 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

this one's my favorite since the past was faster. two poles, ramshackle and dayglo. the other two are in between, good, but not as distinct

kamerad, Friday, 8 February 2008 02:40 (eighteen years ago)

he works in my favorite record store and is a really nice guy. i still haven't heard a lick of his music.

He has some connection to The Monks so his name is always coming up on their message board.

the owner of the store is friends with one of the monks and has pix of them together in the store. i'm assuming that's how they know each other.

"Below the Branches" is top notch, start to finish. Looking forward to hearing more. He's playing New Haven in April. Hope to see that show.

reggie (qualmsley), Saturday, 1 October 2011 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

five years pass...

on the new one (que aura) "no pepper for the dustman" especially sounds like he's joined echo & the bunnymen

reggie (qualmsley), Friday, 25 August 2017 21:06 (eight years ago)

he did join echo and the bunnymen. he toured with them twice over the past year playing guitar.

akm, Friday, 25 August 2017 23:09 (eight years ago)

i am aware. "NPftD" is maybe the most echo-y original song i've heard from him
