Please? Honestly. I mean, it's so overused. Plus, the reference to male love juice is kinda grotty, no?

frankE (frankE), Friday, 27 August 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought its usage died in the 90's along with the words "swirling", "wall of sound" and describing something as "such-and-such on acid".

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 27 August 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Every freakin reissue seems to get the seminal treatment these days...

frankE (frankE), Friday, 27 August 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Which review do you want to ban it in?

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 27 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

frank, what you do to your reissues on your own time is your own business.

But yeah, what an awful word. It should only be used in extreme cases (say, next time Sabbath's catalogue gets a reissue.)

Ian c=====8 (orion), Friday, 27 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

How many of these fucking "BAN THIS WORD PLEEZE" threads are there on ILM?

n.a. (Nick A.), Friday, 27 August 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"such-and-such on acid". WILL NEVER DIE!!!!!!¤!"%!"%!"&!" NEVER! GEITEKILLINGER!

Like a Norwegian on acid (Øystein H-O), Friday, 27 August 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

LIKE THE GRATEFUL DEAD ON ACID!!!!!

Ian c=====8 (orion), Friday, 27 August 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

We can't outlaw use of the world "seminal" in relating Rod Stewart urban legends.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 27 August 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Phish?

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Friday, 27 August 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"seminal patchouli jamsters Phish"

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 27 August 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, maybe we should ban requests to ban specific words from ILM. This one, however, is immensely overused. I imagine, little regard to its actual meaning (of, relating to, or consisting of seed or semen).

Which review do you want to ban it in?

All of 'em. I mean, sure, Talking Heads were an important band. But do I have to see that...word...in like every other review of "The Name of This Band..."? Let alone every one?

frankE (frankE), Friday, 27 August 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

that should read, "I imagine with little regard... "

frankE (frankE), Friday, 27 August 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

A dude I know called said the Pixies were like "the Beach Boys on acid" and I punched him in the nuts.

Huck, Friday, 27 August 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

That's only half true.

Huck, Friday, 27 August 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I punched him in the nuts for free.

Huck, Friday, 27 August 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

did he have a special nut-cozy on to make it feel even "better"?

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 27 August 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Elastic bands and bicycle shorts!

Huck, Friday, 27 August 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

That really was a seminal thread.

Huck, Friday, 27 August 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

everything on Acute Records is totally seminal.

That is...I masturbate with the audio masters.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 27 August 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

> Plus, the reference to male love juice is kinda grotty, no?

absolutely. i remember one of many interminable arguments with my old man during which i referred to something (probably OMD, given that i seem contractually honoured to mention them in every post) as seminal. he stopped, looked at me over his specs and said: "what, you mean they're a load of jizz?"

top way with profanities, my dad.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 27 August 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i was going to start a thread on this last week.
that... that word... is the lone reason i refuse to read music reviews anymore.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 27 August 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

can you have a '_____ on acid' double negative? like 'such and such is like HENDRIX ON ACID!!!!!!'

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Saturday, 28 August 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

really the suffix '-sters' is what really needs to go.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 28 August 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

What if you're reviewing Come, or Staind

dave q, Saturday, 28 August 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, we'll ban the use of the word "seminal" only if we are allowed to use "it's covered in skanky wank juice" instead.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 28 August 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

but but I can't say the words "Detroit techno hit" without it!

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 28 August 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

If "seminal" is getting stale, howabout comparing these recordings to Polyfilla brand Spackle?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 28 August 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The Beatles with the C on the T of the 60s.

Huck, Sunday, 29 August 2004 05:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Clearly instead of 'seminal' it should be 'urinal.'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 August 2004 05:36 (twenty-one years ago)

dumbest music journalist term

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Sunday, 29 August 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Radiohead were the truly the bukkake on the face of 1997.

Huck, Sunday, 29 August 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHAHAHAHA

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

how will people write about the Velvet Underground without the word "seminal?"

shookout (shookout), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

They could aggravate Mark Sinker by going back to saying they "influenced" such and such.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 30 August 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The new Seminal Outlaws remix EP is like Acid Mothers Temple ... onoffonoffon ACID!

briania (briania), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

What about reviews of The Fall's 'Seminal Live'?

Is this another indication of the overwhelmingly male dominated music reviewers guild? (Except for Julie Burchill, but she's basically a bloke anyway). What could the female equivalent be?

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I usedta live on Seminole!!!

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

That "seminal" Melody Maker book "Unknown Pleasures" that everyone's always raving about....the essay on "A Wizard A True Star" describes it as "Revolver, on acid."

Wtf is Revolver, if not "on acid" ?????????

Bumfluff, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe they mean Revolver, on acid, on speed, and nitrous.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Iggy Pop, former front man of the ovarial Stooges...

Huck, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
just wanted to point out that according to google amg has 196 uses of the word.

29 are attributed to Jason Ankeny.

21 are attributed to stephen thomas erlewine.

19 are attributed to Steve Huey.

11 are attributed to John Bush.

6 are attributed to Bruce Eder.

6 are attributed to Lindsay Planer.

3 are attributed to Mark Deming.

2 are attibuted to Heather Phares.

1 is in a Ned Raggett link, but only cuz it's in the title of a Fall album.

Conclusions: I am avoiding work.

frankE (frankE), Thursday, 30 September 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)
