I can't decide whether this song is classic or not. The reason is can't decide is because the singer has a very grating voice, which many people (especially at the time) find/found highly annoying. Also the chorus is a bit choppy as if they were making the song up as the were going along. However, it's a song everyone knows and recognises, and you hear it often in commercials.
So help me make up my mind, classic or annoying? And would you admit to owning it.....

I nearly got stabbed at school for owning this record, plus its a rip off of It's a Mans Mans World.
DESTROY DESTROY DESTROY this and "Can I Get a Witness" immediately.

I have no qualms with the melody but I don't think those lyrics should have been let out into the public.

Anyway, it's the 80s Dido, innit. Not classic, not dud, just meh.

Sam Brown's voice is a mannered London, a good thing.
The LP (1988; the 45 was ... *re*released c. feb 89?) is good too, and so is April Moon (released April 1990).
Another fact is that the LP, but not the 45, or the song, has a '!' at the end of its title.

The only reason I grew a dislike for it is because of how the Greatful Dead and heavy metal fans threatened me when they discovered I had the single. They held me down in an alley with a scalpel to my neck and said if I didn't sing "Stop!" all the way through they would stab me, so I did......
