The Saints: All Times Through Paradise Box Set

I have been playing the newly relesased Saints box set All Times Through Paradise to much enjoyment. It consists of the first 3 albums, (I'm) Stranded, Eternally Yours & Prehistoric Sounds, as well as a live concert from London in 1977, and numerous bonus tracks (including some from a legendary gig at Paddington Town Hall with Radio Birdman).

The tracks have been remastered and it all sounds ace when cranked up loud.

Of course the Saints existed after Prehistoric Sounds, but it was a band in name only. Chris Bailey decided to keep the name while Ed Kuepper went on to form the post punk, free jazz influenced Laughing Clowns, and other bands. And interestingly enough, all the disparate Laughing Clowns recordings are being re-released some time soon collected together in a single set.

Is there a date for this yet? This is sooooo sorely needed.

Nice. I'm something of a Kuepper freak but have never gotten a hold of the Laughing Clowns stuff, so this is most worthy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

What Ned said re: Kuepper/Clowns. Also note that this is the third reish of the early Saints stuff in the last five (or so) years (the EMI two-fer of the first two, the Raven _Wild About You_ comp of the first three, and this box). Of course I'll buy it for the live disc and the extras. . .

It's worth it, I just came across the entire works (I think) of the Laughing Clowns going cheap at a second hand record store - have since been wasting my weekend listening to them - they better include all the artwork of the 12"s and the albums in the boxset cos they be pretty.

Now can I start demanding an Aints boxset?

Jedmond (Jedmond), Sunday, 29 August 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

can anybody who has heard both compare this with the earlier "Wild About You" 2CD set, which also collects the first 3 albums w/ bonus tracks?

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Sunday, 29 August 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"wild about you" is essential, and amazing value (three albums for the price of less than one? yes please) - if you already have it this box is not essential at all.

Some points from the notes to the set. The brief for the remastering was to "enhance the sound in such a way that it would allow the listener to experience the music as it was heard in the studio at the time of the original mix down session". The albums were remastered from the original quarter inch stereo masters. The tapes were baked and played back on the "highest quality Studer tape machine which was specially set up for these tapes' azimuth and line up tones". Ed Kuepper was also involved with Don Bartley in the remastering project. Anyhow for me it sounds a lot better than my cassettes. The whole box is wonderfully designed and informative. A lot of love was put into the project.

Can't wait for the Clowns stuff to replace my old vinyl.

two months pass...
I have just bought this box on ebay and can't wait for it to come. Any further thoughts on how good the remastering is? How is the live stuff? Any further updates on the Laughing Clowns box?

Seconding the Laughing Clowns update. Give to MEEEEEE

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 November 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Just getting into thee box -it's even better than you can imagine. The remastering is really powerful and crisp enough to let you hear some of the the amazing stuff that Ed Kuepper was doing, especially on Eternally Yours. You can really appreciate stuff like the flangey album version of This Perfect Day - sounds totally different now. I haven't had time to play it all, but already some v.interesting stuff - is that Ed singing the chorus of 'Private Affair - or Chris Bailey's 'low' voice? Prehistoric Sounds - I've heard once, I think, probably when it came out. What an album! Why has this been neglected so long? Also, I didn't know that it had a version of the Aretha Franklin written 'Save Me' on it - as performed by James Knight on the recent Soul Jazz 'Miami Sounds' set. Amazing!

How is the sound on the live stuff? I've held off on getting it because I have that two-disc set mentioned upthread, but I think I'll still get this anyway. (I noticed weird dropouts in the sound quality of some of the "I'm Stranded" stuff when listening on headphones, so the remastering is a good thing, Ed Kuepper's meant to be a stickler for that stuff)

Rumour says early '05 for the Clowns box, for those taking an interest.

I've only listened to the Hope and Anchor tracks and they sound great.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Were they recorded at the same gig from which they took that absolutely incendiary version of "Demolition Girl" which appeared on the "Front Row Festival", album Doc?
