BEST INDIES!

They have funny hair. And guitars. But they're not Busted or McFly! These indie boys rock...

THE LIBERTINES
Who Are They? Camden based indie boys with a penchant for military jackets and poetic lyrics. Pretty boy Carl Barat and bad boy Pete Doherty are the two main faces of the band, but, due to internal problems, Pete is having some time out at the moment.
What Do They Sound Like? Catchy, retro punky pop with a kick
You'll Like Them If You Like Franz Ferdinand
The single you should be name-checking "Don't Look Back Into The Sun"
What You Should Know As well as The Libertines, Pete sings with another band, the intriguingly named Babyshambles
Bonus Libertines Fact Fellow frontman Carl Barat runs a trendy nightclub in London's Mayfair called Dirty Pretty Things

JET
Who Are They? Dirty-haired Aussie bruvs Nick and Chris Chester and their mates Cameron Muncey and Mark Wilson are 100% rock 'n' roll and really know how to crank it up!
What Do They Sound Like? Stick The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Oasis, whizz it up, and you'll get something that sounds like Jet.
You'll Like Them If You Like Bands with a real rawk 'tude
The single you should be name-checking "Are You Gonna Be My Girl". You'll know it from those Vodaphone adverts
What You Should Know Jet supported their heroes the Stones on the Aussie leg of their tour.
Bonus Libertines Fact The boys always perform a cover version of Elvis' "Alright Mama" at their shows.

Bonus Libertines Fact Last year, the guys thought that they were going to die when their plane hit an air pocket and began free-falling. Yikes!

RAZORLIGHT
Who Are They? Long-limbed Cockney fella Johnny Borrell is the lead singer, with Swedish mates Bjorn Argen and Carl Dalemo, and Andy Burrows on drums.
What Do They Sound Like? Spiky, twangy, and Trans-atlantic.
You'll Like Them If You Like The Libertines
The single you should be name-checking Their recent single "Golden Touch", which was written about an ex-girlfriend of Johnny's
What You Should Know Singer Johnny was once a member of The Libertines
Bonus Libertines Fact The lads launched Golden Touch by performing on a rooftop in East London!

BLOC PARTY
Who Are They? Kele, Russell, Gordon, and Matt all hail from London
What Do They Sound Like? Edy, punky, and funky. And Bloc Party have enough energy to power a whole house for a week.
You'll Like Them If You Like The Cure
The single you should be name-checking Their debut, "Banquet"
What You Should Know The band got their big break after Kele sent a demo tape to indie faves Franz Ferdinand. After hearing it, singer Alex Kapranos called up and asked if Bloc Party fancied supporting the 'Nand at their next gig!
Bonus Libertines Fact Kele and Russell first met at a house party when they were 15.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Saturday, 28 August 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Are Jet that heap of crap that were on TOTP last night? Who sounds like, I dunno, Northern Uproar crossed with Ocean Colour Scene or something?

Bands with a real rawk 'tude?!?!? OMGWTFROFL etc.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 28 August 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Jet = embarrasing (shit obv.), though Are You Gonna Be My Girl was fun for 47 seconds or so. And they "really know how to crank it up!"

piers (piers), Saturday, 28 August 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this an actual article???

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Stick The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Oasis, whizz it up, and you'll get something that sounds like Jet.

is "whizz it up" British slang for "piss on it"?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 August 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Does it really have a "bonus Libertines fact" at the end of all the bios of non-Libertines bands?

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Sunday, 29 August 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Considering the facts don't relate to the Libertines, I would guess that it's Dom's cut'n'paste skillz that led to that. (I kind of wondered the same thing for about 5 seconds too).

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 29 August 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm.. why are we laughing at this? ILM is after all, not the target audience for this article.

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 29 August 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

ILX should do similar summaries for fiery furnaces, jim orourke, sonic youth, and other favourites around here.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Sunday, 29 August 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I have so little interest in any of these bands that I actually found that informative

lukey (Lukey G), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i was going to do one of these for my own band but i just couldn't make it amusing.

purple patch (electricsound), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It was my cut and paste skillz that led to an excess of Libertineness, yes. Also, this article is accompanied by an interview with the Ordinary Boys telling us why they have more credibility than Busted. Which is about their level, I suppose.
