Musical Nepotism

What kids of pop stars are actually talented and should be genuinely highly regarded on the basis of their own talent?

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

and yes, this was prompted by the Sam Brown thread. I don't think much of Sam Brown. But then, I don't think much of

Julian Lennon
Ziggy Marley
Chesney Hawkes

I'm tempted to say the only exception I can think of is Wilson Phillips, (even tho I've been rude about Carnie on this board!) but that is solely on the basis of "Hold On", not having heard anything else by them.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Chesney Hawkes

Er? I didn't realize he was the spawn of anyone.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The Dickinson kids.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I know Jim Dickinson's not a pop star.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

no Ned he just spontaneously appeared!

serious answer: he's the son of Chip Hawkes of the Tremeloes.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Chesney Hawkes' old man was in the Tremeloes. Brian Poole's daughters are Alisha's Attic, who had a couple of pleasant songs.

Lisa-Marie Presley's solo stuff is teh suck. I can't think of anyone else outside of country music at the moment.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

no Ned he just spontaneously appeared!

Pop stars as such should be born out of vats.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

is anyone going to defend Kelly Osborne?

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Not me. I actually kind of forgot she existed, which is a good thing.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Chesney was Roger Daltrey's son?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Lisa Marie is not "teh suck." True, she can get too mumbley, like she's thinking about the words (a common singer-songwriter error!). But she got the toons, the arrangements, the band, the stance, as proved by a recent set on "Soundstage," where the camera never blinks, and neither does the sound. If anything, she's more the benficiary of lookism (far as I'm concerned!)than neopotism, although being Presley Jackson Gage doesn't hurt. But what, somebody gave her a contract to get in good with who? Elvis, Priscilla, Michael, Nicholas, the Scientologists? C'mon.IAnyway, is neoptism really a problem? Maybe it is? But Julian, Sean, Chris Jagger, Kelly Osborne, Lisa for that matter--all in the process of weeding out. Myabe it works better if you don't try to be too much like your famous realtive. Mike McCartney worked as McGear, and went into hip comedy when the Beatles were known for that.(He did some music as a sideline and comedic means, reversing their thing). Stella McCartney and the less-sucessful Jade Jagger no doubt used family names to some degree of advantage in fashion world. Dylan's son in Wallflowers: name escapes me at moment, despite the hype, ditto those of his nephews, but I know they work for Prince, so perhaps a steadier paycheck (if it don't bounce).

Don, Saturday, 28 August 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Zeke Young's 'Re-ac-tor' was good

dave q, Saturday, 28 August 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, we forgot Kim Wilde. Who used to be good.

Bob Dylan's son is called Jakob.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 28 August 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Bonnie Raitt?
Liza Minnelli?

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 29 August 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Rufus Wainright

Seb (Seb), Sunday, 29 August 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

(Sorry: after I busted "teh suck," I persisted in referring to "neoptism.")Kim Wilde! Yeah I did kinda like "With The Kids in America,." But I saw her trying to duet with her dad Marty; not usure who was messing up whom, though it seemed like a draw. CREEM's Dave DiMartino created a category in her honor: The Kim Wilde Sexually Fascinating Though Musically Useless Category. May not be entirely fair to her, but at least she inspired him to create a category that is very fair to many others. Thanks, Kim! Bonnie Raitt: Yeah, people were falling akl over themselves to hire Bon' for theose Cambrige coffe house gigs after John had been in "The Pajama Game" on Broadway a decade before, and had made one movie (lessee, what was it oh I know "The Pajama Game.") You might ne right about Liza'a earliest gigs, if those were before Judy maxed out of movies and had to take it on the road (I don't know where Vincent M. was at that point).

Don, Sunday, 29 August 2004 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Nancy Sinatra Nancy Sinatra Nancy Sinatra.

And despite later fuckups and delusions, Liza Minelli was good for a time.

emily kawasaki (emil.y), Sunday, 29 August 2004 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

And she's boffo on Arrested Development!

Huck, Sunday, 29 August 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh definitely Nancy Sinatra, seconded! Incidentally, did I hear correctly that there is a new Nancy & Lee record?

Some folks did seem to get some joy from Jeff Buckley innit?

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Sunday, 29 August 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

See, I totally forgot about Nancy Sinatra and Jeff Buckley because they stand up so well on their own, I don't think of them as the products of their parents despite the name screaming it out at me.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 29 August 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Nelson

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Sunday, 29 August 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

DINO, DESI, AND BILLY!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 29 August 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Dino's & Desi's parents are obvious, but I could never figure out Billy's.

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 29 August 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Neneh Cherry, Josh Haden and Denardo Coleman?

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Sunday, 29 August 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Neneh Cherry is arguable, since she was only a stepdaughter.

Am I the only one who thought Jeff Buckley actually sounded very little like Tim? (I thought he sang kinda like Steve Forbert.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw a special about this on television. I can't remember his name, but please keep Phil Collins's son from ever getting famous. It was horrible! Worse, even, than his father.

Still waiting for Rockwell to make a comeback, though.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Tegan & Sara, one of them is clearly driftwood, but I'll be damned if I know which.

huck, Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I just googled Dino (Martin), Desi (Arnaz) & Billy (Hinche), the last one being the son of a real estate developer. 2 out of 3.

What about Gary Lewis? Jerry must have done a few whacky numbers.

Also:

Shari Belafonte
Natalie Cole

And, on that note, Hank III is even better.
