Dude, you don't wanna break out the mariachi songs 'til everyone's nice n drunk, or at least wait til the peak of the party...they're you're anthems, so to speak.

Warm everybody up with some norteƱo or banda stuff first.

i was gonna start a mariachi thread, but figured (like this one) it would go unanswered.

so i was gonna ask about mariachi inspired bands. but i won't

Throw on some Vicente Fernandez... "El Rey"

Wait, won't country and hip-hop tunes also be really good for this occasion? Lord knows that every single family event I've ever been to has featured both types of music. Oh, and what about Tejano? Some Kumbia Kings stuff, some David Lee Garza, some Grupo Mazz, some Selena, some Shelly Lares, that sort of thing? How about incorporating all of the above into your playlist?

As for mariachi and other traditional Mexican music -- yeah, Vicente and Alejandro Fernandez would both be good selections. So would Juan Gabriel and Rocio Durcal. And Yolanda Del Rio. Plus, you cannot deny how effective Luis Miguel would be.

(One cumbia song you MUST play, BTW, is "La Unica Estrella" by Estrella. You might already be thinking of playing one cumbia song, i.e. Fito Olivarez's "Juana La Cubana", but "La Unica Estrella" is TOTALLY ubiquitous as well.)

(I would ask my mom for more recommendations, but she might end up confusing my query for actual interest in this kind of thing, which would kinda suck because then she'd insist on having me listen to Tejano 24/7 and... ugh, no.)

Norteno music is close enuf to what people usually call "mariachi," but the lyrics are a little tough for the old people because they're all about drug deals gone bad. Otherwise, though, your basic Tigres del Norte are kind of inventive and great, even when talking about int'l smuggling and imigrante deathscenes.

And when it comes to sinalaoense music, you're looking at BANDA EL RECODO or nothing at all. Conjunto Primavera is quite nice about that, so is Banda Pura Cana del Daniel Osorno. MORE TUBAS! If they look cool and funky, yr crowd, play some of that Nortec stuff, it uses tuba and tumba and snare samples from old norteno records.

Romantic stuff: Bronco is cheesy/great, Los Temerarios are even better, and second of course to Dee's pix above.

If the family is originally from the Monterey area then you might have a better shot with El Gran Silencio than otherwise, cumbia with a twist. Mexico City people don't like it so much, though, because they're too busy listening to Journey and Foreigner apparently.

As a Mexican this is a topic for which I have some sort of innate knowledge... not really something I listen to but if anyone is interested in this kind of music I'll be glad to share some youtube links of classic mariachi songs. Not sure why would any non-spanish speaker would be interested tho, since the most important aspect of maricachi music is the lyrics, not the music.

Yes, I might like to see those youtubes, thanks. I know enough Spanish to understand the lyrics for the most part.
