My favorite Neil Young song, but it doesn't seem to get much love. Is it only available on the live "Time Fade Away" LP or is there a studio version of it around?

I enjoy the fact that it's blatently autobiographical (a rarity in Young's music)and the main guitar line is bloody harrowing. Growing up in Winnepeg must suck.

Not to detract from what is, as you say, a harrowing tale of upping sticks, getting big beats in the school yard then forming a band...

From Time Fades Away, "14 junkies too weak to work", has to be one of the best opening lines of a Young song.

and yes, Don't Be Denied is a fabulous song. For Winnepeg read any provincial two dimensional shit hole that you may, or may not have been brought up in, white bucks optional.

Ever heard his song "Hitchiker," a autobiographal run-down of every drug he's ever tried? Only on bootleg...

The "Alabama" to the Guess Who's "So Long, Bannatyne"?

My favorite Neil Young song, too.

Not my #1 fave, but it's a killer. That whole second side of Times Fades Away = jammage.

i love this song. the feeling is there. lyrics are great. not my #1 tho but up there.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 8 October 2006 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

'Time Fades Away' is a great album as well--do people ignore because it's live or because they can't handle the rockage?

ramon fernandez (ramon fernandez), Sunday, 8 October 2006 04:55 (nineteen years ago)

They ignore it cos it's kinda been hard to hear I think

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 8 October 2006 05:40 (nineteen years ago)

the recording is bad, it's hard to find and i bet a lot of people might not related to it, even find it creepy. emotions fueling the rockage sprawl in their negativity and the themes in their weirdness and seem peculiar to his particular mindset only-not that a person couldn't relate - love this album, but its weird for me to know he was playing to a stadium of people -kinda make you wince and also respect!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 8 October 2006 05:43 (nineteen years ago)

since this thread has stalled anyway. off topic question: dr.sagan, what is your #1 n.y.?

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 05:53 (nineteen years ago)

I would imagine it's ignored because it's out of print, isn't it? Was it ever released on CD?

Rat Nasty (ratnasty), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 05:59 (nineteen years ago)

Nope. Easy to find on slsk, though.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 06:00 (nineteen years ago)

AMG says there was a 1999 CD release, but I'm not convinced.

The Bearnaise-Stain Bears (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

Time Fades Away is easily available at any used record store, though.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 26 March 2009 19:44 (seventeen years ago)

yeah the vinyls not rare at all.

Jamie_ATP, Thursday, 26 March 2009 19:50 (seventeen years ago)

I love the shot in the movie Almost Famous where they recreate the cover. Must have cost a fortune for something maybe 20 people understood.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 26 March 2009 20:07 (seventeen years ago)

the unofficial CD I have comes with an approx. 30 minute tape-recorded NY show from 1973...

yonder is another great song off that album..."SINNER!"

I am Robertson Speedo (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 March 2009 20:33 (seventeen years ago)

yeah never understood why TFA was so ignored, tons of great songs. Includes probably my favorite song about Los Angeles.

I'm Into that Japanese Pop-Funk (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 26 March 2009 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

yes i'm listening to that song right now, another one of my favourites from that song...the melody in that song is Gold Rush-level quality

I am Robertson Speedo (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 March 2009 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, fantastic album, sorta painful to listen to though.

I was about to say Don't be Denied is my fav NY song too, but then I remembered it comes in third after Barstool Blues and I'm the Ocean.

iatee, Thursday, 26 March 2009 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

another one of my favourites from that songalbum

I am Robertson Speedo (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 March 2009 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

in the Shakey bio it talks about how Neil wrote DBD the day he heard that Danny Whitten died...the song always had this palpable poignancy, but knowing that only deepens it...

the remastered HDCD version of time fades away that leaked is pretty easily available

tylerw, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 19:40 (three years ago)

The "Alabama" to the Guess Who's "So Long, Bannatyne"?

The Guess Who were probably the ones beating him up in the schoolyard!

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 30 March 2023 15:09 (three years ago)
