Organization or Compiling a List for one's Spouse/Partner/Good Friend...?

My wife and I are rearranging our rooms. This task involved moving my 1000+ CD collection (she added about 50 of her own when we mixed our stuff). Upon seeing the piles and piles, she said "We have a lot of CDs. I'd listen to a lot more of them if I even knew what we had."

So, I've been assigned to create a list. Sure, it will have titles and artist and some attempt at genre classification, but should anything else be added? Has anyone else done this? (ridiculously) should it be in a word-like program? or excel?

Any suggestion would be appreciated!

I've been meaning to get around to making an Excel spreadsheet of my music for ages.
A few years ago I wrote out such a list by hand, including these table headings : Artist, Title, format (i.e. 1 x CD, 2 x CD, LP, EP, Single, etc.), and year. I don't like making genre classifications, but if you find it helps, then you should do it. Since your wife is unfamiliar with a lot of your music, it sounds like it would be more useful for her than for you.

i too have an xl spreadsheet. columns for artist, title, genre, sub-genre, cd type, number of disks, date of entry, year of original release, comments, etc. + graphs and so on. quite anal, really. all my disks are arranged in alpha order as well. i don't think my partner finds it usefull at all.

Phil, graphs? What sort of graphs? I take it mean pie charts (or the like) to break things down by genre, year, etc.

....or you could enter your whole collection(eventually) into the database @ rateyourmusic.com, (where rating is optional). Bonus, after you enter them all, there's a function where you can convert your list into an excel spreadsheet. It's not as fast as just making a spreadsheet but it's handy cuz you can see info, cover art no the albums and write and see reviews and shit, as long as the admins feel like paying for the servers anyway.

Projects such as this take a concentrated effort. For exmple: I recently decided to clean all my & my wife's vinyl. It took two and a half days. Good luck! I may try the spreadsheet thing in the near future. My old 3x5 index cards are getting a little dog-eared. But it has been a reliable system.

just use the zen technique, throw them all into the room willy nilly. then pick em at random and surprise yourself.

That would be kinda like a radio station with dj's that you know.

yep. mainly pie charts and one bar chart. i post the main sheets onto web pages too and excel converts nicely into good looking html.
