really???

ragged glory is widely considered his best '90s album, and it was a huge deal when it came out. it's the album where he went absolutely bonkers (in the good way) with gtr distortion. it's still rated pretty highly by fans. it's spotty, and i wouldn't put it up against prime '70s neil, but the first three tracks especially, from "country home" through "fuckin' up," are pretty masterful.

Briania -- Pazz and Jop has always struggled getting hip-hop specialists to vote and Illmatic didn't crossover much to white alt-oriented critics or (lord knows) the classic-rock old guard at the time. Though, yeah, that low placement is still insanity.

FWIW -- A lot of those "embarrassments" are pretty good (Can You Fly, Colossal Head, and Devil Without a Cause by my estimation, among others), though even more are indeed embarassing. The way pre-punk/disco/hip-hop critics cling to old heroes even when they've made obviously subpar records is the most depressing thing about those polls.

come to think abt it i dunno how many other really good singles there were in 1999 (at least ones that could gather any kind of consensus).

i have never liked "no scrubs" at all and, uh, len/rob thomas/smash mouth. more of the stuff i liked placed between 10-25 than 1-10 but i guess that's not a big deal.

in the older lists, the top 5 are generally solid. In the 1999 list the top 10 (with the exception of Em and the Roots) are shit. It's not that there's no good songs on the later lists, it's that their not in the right spots. Ricky Martin beating ODB is a crime against humanity.

basically i just don't like feminism that pits itself at the level of what it's trying to decry.

("there is no feminism without a critique of capitalism", etc etc. whereas "bling bling" isn't passed off as anything but conspicuous consumption.)

I think one thing to keep in mind about the poll is that, since people can vote for everything and anything, what ends up being in the Top 40 often has more to do with the peculiarities of math than with some sort of conscious plot among rock critics to suck ass. I did some data entry on the last one, and I lost track of how many ballots I entered that featured 9 albums I'd never even heard of before in my life, and Outkast. I mean, there were more albums released last year than in all of the 80's put together... which makes the poll sort of like the California recall election, except with Gallaghers I through MXCII in the running.

Also, it's worth reading the 1992 Pazz & Jop essay for context re: Arrested Development...

And lastly, while "No Scrubs" is eh, the "52 Scrubs" mashup is teh awesome...

Prine not bootcamp but coddled and upstaged (since he gonna lay back, inevitable at some points) just right by Iris, Melba, Emmylou, Lucinda, Delores--xgau sez:
... the costar is Iris DeMent, who kills on both the Bobby Braddock cornpone of "(We're Not) The Jet Set" (rhymes with "Chevro-let set") and the conflicted spouse-swapping of the impossible old George & Melba hit "Let's Invite Them Over"—as well as Prine's only new copyright, the title track, in which a husband and wife who love each other to death paint totally different pictures of their marriage.
Prine and Dement set did a tour after that; and xgau wrote real good actual journalism about that; I wish he would deign to take that tack more often.

This was a surprise. Both albums aren't well-regarded and haven't been for years, and yet they placed higher than the Chills' Submarine Bells (#12) and A Tribe Called Quest's People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm (#18)! I actually like the Prince album - not a great album but when I think of it as a curated soundtrack rather than a full-fledged Prince album, it's pretty good. I may give All Shook Down another chance someday.
