This is the panel that I've been invited to be part of:
Press Play: Rediscovering Music Journalism OnlineIs online publication Pitchfork the Rolling Stone of its generation? How did the small community of music blogs suddenly emerge as the hot place to discover new sounds? Has the print media dropped the ball, and if so, is the future of music journalism to be found online?Moderator: Will Hermes, Music Editor, Tracks/Contributing editor, Spin

what is this, a supreme court hearing?
― fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 30 August 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)
Also make a note of what time the panel is: if you're in an early morning slot, you'll get softball questions all around.
That's actually a panel I'm very interested in, so if I'm able to attend CMJ this year I'll be sure to say hi.
Best of luck!

Spinning Wheels: Where Are The New Ideas In Indie Rock? With so much of indie rock revisiting decades-old ideas like garage rock and post-punk, who's pushing the music forward? Our panel discusses whether or not indie rock is just recycling itself, and attempts to uncover some areas of progressive hope.Moderator: Slim Moon, Owner, Kill Rock Stars
That one should be pretty amusing. I'll try to catch that too.

Thanks for asking this question Matthew. I'm a newbie at this myself. I figured I'd bring a few talking points and see where it went from there. I don't think anyone's holding grudges here, and I don't see why it wouldn't be a good time.
I'm mostly pysched for the free ticket to CMJ. Which is pretty awesome. Anyone know who's playing?

"Is online publication Pitchfork the Rolling Stone of its generation? The tone of the question is elusive." Coming from an editor of Tracks, I'd guess the tone is fulsome praise (if the answer is yes) or wrist-slapping dismissal (...no). I know nothing of Mr Hermes, but he hardly seems like an unbiased referee.

The panels can be entertaining, though. I remember a panel featuring Queen Latifah and Peter Hook of New Order, and his Hookness made several dismissive comments about hip hop (someone asked "Where is Ice Cube?", who was supposed to be on the panel, "He melted" snorts Hook). At one point, Latifah was going on and on about being ripped offf by bootleggers (meaning people selling pirated copies of her albums on the street), while Hook interuppted her with a tirade about how she should be so lucky that fans are bootlegging her (him meaning bootlegs as live recordings). They were completely missing each others' points, but Hook was so amusing that I laughed out loud,....prompting the entirety of Stetsasonic, sitting right in-front of me, to turn and glare at me menacingly.
