What Is It Like Being On A CMJ Panel Discussion?

I ask because I'm going to be part of one this year, and I've never done anything like this in my life. What should I expect? I'm decent with public speaking for the most part, so I'm not exactly freaked out about that part.

This is the panel that I've been invited to be part of:

Press Play: Rediscovering Music Journalism Online
Is online publication Pitchfork the Rolling Stone of its generation? How did the small community of music blogs suddenly emerge as the hot place to discover new sounds? Has the print media dropped the ball, and if so, is the future of music journalism to be found online?
Moderator: Will Hermes, Music Editor, Tracks/Contributing editor, Spin

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 30 August 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It seems like if the discussion is print vs internet media, the moderator shouldn't be involved in either. Also, I think scottpl and Ryan Pitchfork are on this panel.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 30 August 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

what is this, a supreme court hearing?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 30 August 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I was on a panel in 2001 and found it to be a rewarding and surprisingly easy experience. Audience was engaged yet somewhat passive, never attempting to talk anyone down, fellow panelists were equally respectful. What to expect depends entirely on how the moderator wants to conduct it: does he want confrontations or just presentations, does he want rehearsed-speak or riffing. Drop Mr. Hermes a note, tell him you're on his panel and ask what kind of structure he's got in mind for it. What usually happens is, one person starts monopolizing the time talking about a pet topic; and it all depends on whether you want to be that one person. :) I recommend bringing a couple index cards with the points you absolutely need to make before the panel's over.

Also make a note of what time the panel is: if you're in an early morning slot, you'll get softball questions all around.

That's actually a panel I'm very interested in, so if I'm able to attend CMJ this year I'll be sure to say hi.

Best of luck!

Joseph McCombs, Monday, 30 August 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm going to be on that panel, and have no idea what to expect from it either. (I had guessed that you'd be on it as well, Matthew). Ryan is going to be on the one about the lack of progression in indie rock.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 30 August 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

What time is it happening, Matthew? I'll be in town to play CMJ, and I'd like to check out some of the panels, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 August 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

what is this, a supreme court hearing?

Well, yes. And I expect him to steal ideas from the internet people.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 30 August 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I just saw that your band was playing Jay, I'll try to catch your show if I can. Not sure what time/day things are just yet.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 30 August 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Ryan Pitchfork is doing this one?

Spinning Wheels: Where Are The New Ideas In Indie Rock?
With so much of indie rock revisiting decades-old ideas like garage rock and post-punk, who's pushing the music forward? Our panel discusses whether or not indie rock is just recycling itself, and attempts to uncover some areas of progressive hope.
Moderator: Slim Moon, Owner, Kill Rock Stars

That one should be pretty amusing. I'll try to catch that too.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 30 August 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not even sure when my band is playing yet!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 August 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

when is the panel, Matthew?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Really, if you know how to masterbate, you should be fine...

frankE (frankE), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

As far as I know, they haven't announced the days/times for the panels yet. I'll let you know when I do.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Most CMJ panelists wear costumes.

Show up in a bunny suit. You'll get funny looks if you don't.

MMMBop, Monday, 30 August 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet it's like being the coolest guy at a Star Trek convention.

shookout (shookout), Monday, 30 August 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

. . . says an ILM regular.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 30 August 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh shit, am I a regular now?

shookout (shookout), Monday, 30 August 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm on the panel too (for music.for-robots.com). The panel starts at 12:30 on October 15th. But I guess that's tentative still. We'll see.

Thanks for asking this question Matthew. I'm a newbie at this myself. I figured I'd bring a few talking points and see where it went from there. I don't think anyone's holding grudges here, and I don't see why it wouldn't be a good time.

I'm mostly pysched for the free ticket to CMJ. Which is pretty awesome. Anyone know who's playing?

Is online publication Pitchfork the Rolling Stone of its generation?

The tone of the question is elusive.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure how many shows I can catch, but I'm definitely going out of my way to see the Sonic Youth show.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

They usually amount to nothing too much. Chances are, there'll be someone on the panel providing "comic relief," and dragging every discussion into lo.com.denom. territory. Nothing will be accomplished. Jim Fouratt will probably show up, scream at you and accuse you of not doing enough to end the AIDS crisis.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"Jim Fouratt will probably show up, scream at you and accuse you of not doing enough to end the AIDS crisis."
HAHAHA! Is the old panel-stalker still at it?

"Is online publication Pitchfork the Rolling Stone of its generation?

Coming from an editor of Tracks, I'd guess the tone is fulsome praise (if the answer is yes) or wrist-slapping dismissal (...no). I know nothing of Mr Hermes, but he hardly seems like an unbiased referee.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The transgender community is very angry and Jim Fouratt:

shookout (shookout), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Odd...I was on a panel at MACRock and an audience member shifted the focus of the discussion to what we, the panelists, were or were not doing to empower the transgender community. I guess this is a common occurance?

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

well, what ARE you doing to empower the transgender community?

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I've posted music a lot of music made by people with queer sexuality. Does that count?

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

what do you mean you've never heard princess tinymeat?

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to goto the New Music Seminars and CMJ Fests and see Fouratt -- who is actually a nice guy and a knowledgable gent -- scream himself hoarse at panels....like bitterly, emphatically castigating Jeff McDonald of Redd Kross and Bobby Gillespie of (pre-faux-politicized) Primal Scream for their apathy.

The panels can be entertaining, though. I remember a panel featuring Queen Latifah and Peter Hook of New Order, and his Hookness made several dismissive comments about hip hop (someone asked "Where is Ice Cube?", who was supposed to be on the panel, "He melted" snorts Hook). At one point, Latifah was going on and on about being ripped offf by bootleggers (meaning people selling pirated copies of her albums on the street), while Hook interuppted her with a tirade about how she should be so lucky that fans are bootlegging her (him meaning bootlegs as live recordings). They were completely missing each others' points, but Hook was so amusing that I laughed out loud,....prompting the entirety of Stetsasonic, sitting right in-front of me, to turn and glare at me menacingly.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, coincidentally, my site's color scheme looks a lot like a gay pride rainbow.

hahahahahaha!!! Oh, that is priceless. and why does graham norton get a show and hooky doesn't?

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't Princess Tinymeat an alumnus of the Virgin Prunes?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember someone passionately grilling Rat - the then guitarist and not-entirely-articulate guitarist for Ned's Atomic Dustbin -- about corruption in the music industry. It was a herculean excersise in utter pointlessness.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen Fouratt in action, and I believe that he, besides being a Stalinist about art and its function, is mentally ill.

shookout (shookout), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do they let Fouratt in the building at this point? Don't you need a badge to get in? Can't they just deny him registration?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 September 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, the correct answer is to go to the panel with the ILMers, right? So I'm basically telling you to convince me that the second panel will be lame.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 September 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw man, I kinda wanted to see Ryan Pitchfork in action. Clearly I don't have an option!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

That blurb makes it seem as though my surname is actually Fluxblog.

"It's Americanized, my great-grandfather's name was Edward Fluxblogkowski..."

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the first panel looks more interesting, ILM'ers or no ILM'ers. The second has the potential to turn into a "those aren't new ideas, they sound just like Sebadoh", "no they don't", "yes they do" quagmire.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)
