"Skits" on rap/hip hop/r&B albums...name the worst ones

"The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill," with the awful, cloying, self esteem-building grade school class dialogues just about kills the album for me.

The ones on Ice-T's "Power" are real bad too, Ice-T trying to do two different voices but sounding exactly the same.

"under construction" to thread

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 30 August 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

90% of all skits on hip-hop albums are GODAWFUL, but SB/TLB to thread anyway.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 30 August 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ken Kaniff"

Joseph McCombs, Monday, 30 August 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

well, the one on Mobb Deep's Hell On Earth leading into G.O.D. pt 3 is pretty bad, but it can be hilarious if you're stoned just right.

mucho, Monday, 30 August 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Many of the skits on Wyclef's Carnival are pretty choice, but the one with the phone call in the middle of the night and the voice going "RAPE RAPE RAPE" is really horrible, not funny, and definitely not among the greatest moments of an album to be listening to at work when your boss comes into your office.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

That unbelievably tedious serialised drama about the "activist" which ruined the CD version of Blaze 25 Years Later.

an ex-girlfriend sort of stopped speaking to me for a while after i visited her at school and made relentless fun of those

amateur!!st, Monday, 30 August 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

If you play those Lauryn Hill skits for a real teacher, watch them vomit. Everything that's wrong with education today can be found in those skits (i.e. self-esteem over the three Rs).

shookout (shookout), Monday, 30 August 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

(my ex was a teacher!)

amateur!!st, Monday, 30 August 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yikes, did she enjoy those skits?

Both my mother and my brother are both teachers, and whenever I'd play that album, they'd mock-retch during the classroom skits...

shookout (shookout), Monday, 30 August 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

spearhead's album about capital punishment to thread

Symplistic (shmuel), Monday, 30 August 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The fake newscast on Niggaz4Life is pretty hysterically bad, especially the one where that newscaster gets shot - "Turn the fuckin' camera off you motehrfucker!" (beeeeeeeeeeeeeep)

"To Kill A Hooker" rules though

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 30 August 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The intro skit to "METHOD MAN" is one of my favorites of all time. "..just ya nuts lyin' on the fuckin' dresser, just ya nuts..."

djdee2005, Monday, 30 August 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

95% of all skits are the pits.

well the wu-tang has some great skits. with rain sound effects and stuff. the "don rodriguez" one on liquid swords is really entertaining for some reason.

amateur!!st, Monday, 30 August 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

just the way he pronounces "don rodriguez" basically... ("don wodWEEgez")

first first ever question on I Love Music!!

Hip Hop Skits on Albums: Classic or Dud?

see also:

hiphop skits: S&D
hip-hop skits: S/D
Hip hop skits : C or D?

and last but not least:

Who should have skits on their album?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 30 August 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, i feel vindicated somehow

amateur!!st, Monday, 30 August 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Guess it's time to lock this thread.

shookout (shookout), Monday, 30 August 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Hip hop was better without the skits. If you MUST include a 'skit,' for the love of god, don't list it as such in the tracklisting! Totally lame. Who was the first dumbass to come up with that one? Probably Public Enemy or De La Soul.

Wanna hear a good hip hop album? Special Ed's Youngest in Charge has NINE SONGS. And it still holds up.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 30 August 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, i mean "MY first question" .. i have no idea what the FIRST first one was, but it's probably the only thread on ILM not to have someone nerdily pop their head above the parapet with a list of search results

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 30 August 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

are there any straight-up R&B albums with skits on? it seems unlikely for some reason

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 30 August 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

what's straight-up R&B? does TLC count?

COLLEGE FUCKING DROPOUT

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 30 August 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

good call, Bernie Mac lays a brick on College Dropout. Weird thing, a friend accidentally got the clean version and it has a skit not found on the dirty one. It's marginally more funny than the others, which is to say not funny at all.

tremendoid, Monday, 30 August 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

thats not bernie mac, its a fake one

kevin says relax (daddy warbuxx), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, kanye's anti-college thing is hardly funny, or anti-establishment. Just a middle-class kid who didn't like college much, then decided that cos he hadn't exactly succeeded on those terms, he'd take out his frustration on record...
sure, he's laughing now, but no one else is laughing at his skits.

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

one of kanye's parents is a college professor.

something about kanye's whole anti-education bent rubs me the wrong way. he acts like college is a bad thing, as if kids shouldnt aim to do well in school. not everyone gets to be a millionaire hip hop star kanye!

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

not with that attitude.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

worst one i've ever heard is on the Ludacris Chicken n Beer album where he's taking a dump.

pinder (pinder), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

the notorious b.i.g. fellatio one on ready to die is gruesome

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Janet Jackson put skits on "Velvet Rope" and "All For You," ne?

Joseph McCombs, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

SB/TLB to thread

No.
