What Weller Fans Think

Vroomy, Monday, 30 August 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Or what Should Weller have chosen on his new covers album?

John Cage's "Silence."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 August 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

And he'd still vomitously wail over it.

If you click that link you will see Paul Weller fans favorite albums poll somewhere on the board.

Not a bad list if you ignore the number 1. I can hear a lot of MBV and Sonic Youth in his revisionof the Rose Royce classic.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 30 August 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

How can people with otherwise good taste love OCS?!

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Monday, 30 August 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the younger weller fans like OCS, The Jam fans like anything from that period and TSC like soul and jazz. At least going by the full top 40 poll.
Interestingly all the 'canon' stuff is further down the list.

Rose Royce, Monday, 30 August 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Its not too surprising considering 1/2 of OCS are in Wellers band.

Rose Royce, Monday, 30 August 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

slightly OT, but can someone explain the weller hate on ILM? I'm not a huge fan but the jam's singles are all classic and I'd defend some style council stuff as well (from what I remember). He's worked with Robert Wyatt which is nothing but a plus.

Is this a UK-based thing having something to do with his personality (about which I know nothing)?

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 30 August 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

A lot of it is due to 'Dadrock' bands of the mid 90s and Weller being mainly to blame.
Of course some Jam fans have never forgiven him for splitting up The Jam and forming The Style Council.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 30 August 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

That would mean it could be young Ned's favorite cover version ever!

Neds Dad, Monday, 30 August 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

And yet I have many doubts about this statement.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard it through the bathroom door this morning (Terry Wogan!) and it sounded quite good, although on first muffled hearing not as good as 'The Bottle'.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I will get the album when it's three quid.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Theres a rare misprinted 7" single in the shops just now. Could be a collectors item?

Boniface, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

It's all over Clyde 2 at work. It's never off Radio 2 either.
Could be Wellers biggest hit in years.

Has anyone heard that dance single featuring Steve Winwood?(wellers hero) Winwood re-recorded his vocals because he loved it so much.
The video is very c-man friendly too.

Marie D, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

This months Q gave the album Studio 150 2/5. A real pasting for Q Magazine.

The canon didn't do too well at all on the Paul Weller site.

Tadforth, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

what bloody canon? ilm has as much if not more of a cast in stone "canon" as the rest of the music press's "evil empire". this talk of rejecting the canon is as snobby and misguided as having one in the 1st place. and of course paul weller is rubbish.

stelfox, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Stelfox OTM about the ILM canon

Bidfurd, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Just for the record, I have downloaded this and this statement is unfortunately untrue.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The singles had more airplay than any Weller single has had since the days of Stanley Road. Should be a top ten hit.

Roger Broke, Friday, 3 September 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the 'plum' is the ticket and it references the colour.

Ferdie, Friday, 3 September 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Oops wrong thread.

Everyone has a canon! It's inevitable.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 3 September 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Or an anti-canon canon

pompey lad, Friday, 3 September 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

So what would ILM like to see Weller cover?
