Is that CDR swap still happening?
I have a lot of songs to trade, and extremely interessado in your Gal costa collection.
Actually, if you could just make a straight copy of your cd, i would trade you a cdr full of stuff all the same. I can't find that cd anywhere!

dan deruntz, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

which cd? and where do you live?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I live in swampscott, MA...
The cd is:
Gal Costa, Gal Costa 1968 (out of print)
Has:
Nao identificado
Divino Maravilhoso
Baby
Que Pena...

Caetano veloso, Caetano veloso 1967 also would be nice (but i'm gonna get one of my own)
Has:
Tropicalia

dan deruntz, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

there is a tropicalia boxset that you can get for about $35 that has both of those albums as well as gilberto gil, tropicalia 1, and os mutantes. or you can fileshare?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Thats awesome! I am trying to buy all those cd's now.
Where is that boxset sold?
And i can do a direct limewire sort of thing as well.

I already blew a small fortune getting vinyls of these.

dan deruntz, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i have that 1968 gal costa record. what does the cover look like?

does dusty groove still have that gal costa box set?

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

What exactly is the name of that box set?

dan deruntz, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Tropicalia - 30 años

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It's titled in spanish? Where else can it be found typically?
Is it made in mexico, spain, or argentina?

dan deruntz, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

wait--there is no "gal costa" record from 1968. there were two such in 1969. i have one of them. the one with gal in a feather boa on the cover.

there was a gal costa-specific box set, but i forget the name. dusty groove no longer carries it, it turns out.

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It's titled in spanish? Where else can it be found typically?
Is it made in mexico, spain, or argentina?

import from brasil. AMATEURIST, the record reffered to is a portrait gal costa with pink and gray tones, almost like a rudimentary patrick nagel piece.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

why are you capitalizing my name? do you think i am hard of hearing?

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Fui informado erroneamente.
It's hard to get pin down that record because of the self-title craze.

Quis dizer: Is the record you have (amateur!!st) in stereo, and for sale?

And it was the box set that i wanted to know the origen of, since there isn't an n(tilde) in portuguese...
Glad i found this place, by the way.

dan deruntz, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i need to find jorge ben's "tropicalia" influenced album and tom ze's second album, which hasnt been reissued, i think . . .

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

also, has anyone heard the 2 new ze cd's, which are pieces commissioned for dance stuff?

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

is that (jorge ben) the silent brooklyn one? or ben? or what?

dan deruntz, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought the one that starts with 'nao identificado' is from '68 (at least that's what it said when i slsk-it).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

jorge ben's "tropicalia" influenced album

Are you talking about Africa Brasil? I love that. Hey I think most of these are available on CD, aren't they? Somebody (maybe Amateurist?) once posted the web address of a brazil music site that sold all this stuff, if I'm not mistaken. It was in regards to that colossal Nara Leao box (also essential!). Am I remembering this correctly?

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

the info wz on the nara leao thread:

Nara Leão

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Worth checking here:

http://stores.ebay.com/The-Brazilian-Store

I've bought a few things from them. Gal Costa had two self-titled 1969 albums--the one with her in the boa inside is the second one. If the first one, w/Nao identificado, is indeed out of print, I coud put it in my soulseek share.

Good info over at www.slipcue.com

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

whats your soulseek info 'nono'?
Slipcue is pretty nice. Thanks

dan deruntz, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ps: anyone know about the supposed sound quality of the japanese version, or where it can be found. I have some of the songs from the low-fi cd.
I know there is better quality becuase other compilations versions (tropicalia essentials) blow these away.

Is the box-set the low quality kind?

dan deruntz, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm always changing my soulseek name. If you list your info I will add you to my list and you should get on no problem. My copy is from the Tropicalia box set, I believe it is mastered from vinyl. I wonder how much better the Japanese version would be--this version sounds fine.

nono, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Dan is asking about the other GC album -- the one not in the box (the one that has the groovy painting cover, NOT the feather boa one) -- and yeah, the Japanese one is supposed to be properly mastered from the tapes. I had the Brazilian vinyl master and I sold that thing, meaning to upgrade to the Japanese one.

AFAIK everything in the Tropicalia box is properly mastered, including "feather boa" GC.

BTW, does everyone know about this amazing site:

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The Japanese version on Philips has superior sound.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anybody have the japanese version?
The upc code or the catalog number could help.

(nono) my name is dderuntz on soulseek. I clicked on psybrazil, so i should be in there.

dan deruntz, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

found a weird uruguayan pressing of her 75 album Gal Canta Caymmi. really beautiful samba soul. super funky and upbeat. i guess it's all covers of Dorival Caymmi's work. anyone know much about him?

jaxon, Friday, 13 July 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

this album kinda rules:

http://www.dustygroove.com/images/products/c/caymmi_dori_caymmi197_101b.jpg

I guess he was fairly old by that point ... his voice sounds finely aged in oak barrels. stately. but the backing is rad native brazilian drums stylings.

Stormy Davis, Friday, 13 July 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

he's an OG MPB influencer/originator, if i remember correctly worked a lot with joao + jobim.. have been trying not to spend $50 on "caymmi visita jobim" via dustygroove, but it may be worth it.. dori is his son, has other famous MPB spawn as well but can't recall names

Bangelo, Friday, 13 July 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

the sweet voice of the young gal costa is one of the most beautiful things ever. some of those songs on her first record send me into some other, better world.....

Dusty Groove have reissued the 1969 Cinema Olympia album.

Telephone thing, Sunday, 6 April 2008 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

awesome. everybody digs on the other s/t but this one's my preference.

Edward III, Sunday, 6 April 2008 02:45 (eighteen years ago)

it's pretty intense

gershy, Sunday, 6 April 2008 04:47 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, I love Tuareg off the (Soul Jazz Records) Tropicalia album.

Domingo - by Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso - is unbelievably lovely.

Daniel Giraffe, Sunday, 6 April 2008 08:25 (eighteen years ago)

cinema olympia is absolutely the better of the two!

listened to gal over teh weekend... I haven't heard everything she's ever done but it's hard to imagine it ever got better than this. the wildest, grungiest record tropicalia ever produced. first side is freaky but the second side sounds like firedemons screwing in the dirt.

MEH NOM EEEEE GAAAUUUUUUUUUUUU

Edward III, Monday, 7 April 2008 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

I'm asssuming the dusty groove reissue will take the edge off those $250 price tags on amazon

Just bought Gal (1969) from Sounds of the Universe in London. A few too many psychedlic indulgences for my taste, but still great. What a voice, fuck.

According to IMDB, it's a stand-alone short film; the director, Antonio Carlos da Fontoura, made a short film with/about Os Mutantes the same year. I've always been curious about the relation between the Tropicália musicians and the Cinema Novo filmmakers, but I imagine information is hard to come by if you don't speak Portuguese.
Those visuals and her whole demeanour were a lot more introvert than I expected from just listening to the record; I guess it's balanced by the outgoing live performance.

Both of those short films are really great to see, but also...

That Os Mutantes one clearly shows them (in some of the clips) at Disneyland in the late 60s - I had no idea they visited the U.S. at all in their earlier years?? According to this blog they stopped through on the way back from Europe in Feb/March 1969: https://mutanteslive.wordpress.com/2014/08/23/o-planeta-dos-mutantes/

city worker, Thursday, 7 October 2021 02:39 (four years ago)

Fontoura's feature debut, Copacabana Me Engana, opens with Gal's version of Baby (and also has Mutantes and Gilberto Gil on the soundtrack)(no subtitles, unfortunately).

lol sophie charlotte is a pretty bad pick for the role... so many others actress to choose.

gal is great and still going - her last album from 2021 is nice, the 2011 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recanto - is amazing.

There were a good few years where her records would be a part of the morning rotation, her work is part of my mind now.
