not that i go to the virgin "megamagazine" for my info, but I think that opening line is purely wrong. Am I right?

What may be music's most successful mobilization effort since the original Woodstock was held to protest the Vietnam War, is being received with great aplomb. That is, if ticket sales are an indication. In the same summer that forced Lollapalooza to cancel due to waning ticket sales, the Vote For Change tour is proving to have the opposite effect.

and i don't think she's using "aplomb" with much aplomb there either.

You're right

Vietnam was continued to protest Woodstock

Surely you protest at or against something you don't merely protest it? Or is this another great idea from the USA?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it's (at least colloquially in the US; I wouldn't know about formally) correct to say one is "protesting" something.

As far as I know, Woodstock wasn't organized to protest the Vietnam War. It was organized to make money. The fact that many people who opposed the war went there, and found common ground, is incidental.

And even if Woodstock were organized to protest the Vietnam War, that's one of the worst opening paragraphs I've ever read.

Oh god, "protesting" something - sounds horrible, almost as bad as "impacting" something. I expect Tony Blair will be using it soon enough tho.

Agreed. I had to read it three times before I started to understand what she is trying to say.

Next month in the Virgin Megamag : The Inside Story of LiveAid -- organized in 1985 by Bob Geldof in order to protest hunger!

it is a pretty stupendously awful paragraph, isn't it?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

what turned out to be a terrible opening line for this article, was written with very little aplomb.
