The Ten Commandments of Prince Buster's Auto-Clean
1. Thou shall have no other car wash than Prince Buster's Auto-Clean.
2. Thou shall encourage no man to make wash to you, either buff or wax you for I, Prince Buster, am a very jealous man and am ready to lay low any other car wash in the tri-county area.
3. Remember, exact change only, in my every whim and fancy, seven days a week and twice on Sundays , because at no time will I ever be tired 0f I-T "it".
4. Honor the name of Prince Buster's Auto-Clean, so that every other driver may honor it also.
5. Thou shall not provoke Prince Buster's Auto-Clean to anger or my wrath will descend heavily upon your chrome and paint finish.
6. Thou shall not search my pockets at night or annoy me with your hearsays, for items left on the seats and in the ashtrays are not the responsibility of Prince Buster's Auto-Clean.
7. Thou shall not shout my name in the wash bays if I am washing another vehicle, but wait intelligently until after the auto-dry, when we can both have it out decently, for I am your man, a funny man, and detest a scandal in public places
8. Thou shall not drink, or smoke nor use profane language in the waiting area, for those bad habits I will not stand for.
9. Thou shall strictly observe the 12-foot clearance limit, for the world will not hold me guilty if I commit murder.
10. Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's gloss, nor her shine, nor her sparkling tires and mirrors, nor anything that's hers, and neither shall thou call my attention to any damage to aerials, curb feelers or anything protruding from the body of the vehicle itself.

These are the ten commandments from Prince Buster's Auto-Clean
Given to you
By me, Prince Buster

11. Thou shalt not let one smart-alecky post permanently derail discussion of the current doings of the once-and-ever-mighty Prince Buster. Respect!

briania (briania), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

12. Thou shalt not mis spell the state where the Prince is from, for where will they go with the 'fired fish and six quart of rum'.

jb, Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

it's really a loss to the general public that prince buster never got his own tv series

amateur!!st, Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not too late to install him as Judge Dread in place of Judge Judy! I would watch.

Prince Buster turned up on tv just last week as part of the BBC's etymology program Balderdash And Piffle. Benjamin Zephaniah was in Jamaica looking into the origins of the word Ska and PB was one of those he talked to (along with a variety of others with, er, interesting teeth). looks good for his age. couldn't quite believe it was the same PB given that those lps i bought last year were from nearly 40 years ago.

i'd like to know exactly how many records on his own label the dude released, esp. all those ones that are weird repackagings of, like, early maytals and ethiopians and etc., but say prince bustore on the front!!!

i have had several dreams of going to his record shack but that just shows i am a total dork.

I had the great honor of meeting this genius in 1998 when he showed up to a selector show I booked in hallandale, fl. the gig tanked, but i perked up when the guitarist asked me: "tom, would you mind if Prince Buster was on the list?"

So buster showed up, all gold teeth and giant personality. One of the few times I;ve ever been star struck. Then he came out onstage and did the 10 commandments of ska, making the 100 kids in attendance shit their pants. He's lived in miami for ages, yet that's the only appearance ive ever head of him making down here.

one year passes...

watched The Harder They Come yesterday. at one point ivan goes into prince buster's shop to try and get him to stock his record. the sign outside reads something like 'Prince Buster. records. phonograph parts. car decorations'

PB himself turns up as the dj at one point.

also, re his song 'Blackhead Chineman', watching THTC it's easy to see who that was written about - leslie kong was sat in the recording booth in several scenes.

It is with great sadness that I have just learned of the death of Jamaica's music icon and pioneer, Prince Buster. A true music legend.

RIP

I just know the big, grteat ska songs, 10 Commandments, etc.

I like this bit from wiki:

Campbell applied to the Farm Work Program (guest worker scheme for the US agricultural sector) with the intention of buying music for his sound system but on the day of departure was refused entry into the scheme. Knowing that he wouldn't be able to personally source records from the US, Campbell decided to record his own music. He approached Arkland "Drumbago" Parks, a professional drummer at the Baby Grand Club who had arranged and recorded a special (exclusive recording) for the Count Boysie sound system. Drumbago agreed to help and Campbell immediately began rehearsing with the musicians at the Baby Grand Club, including the guitarist Jah Jerry, who played on Campbell's first recording session

Not sure Buster's importance in the history of Jamaican music is talked about enough (by me as much as anyone else).
