I Need To Make CDs For My 80 Year Old Grandfather's Surprise Birthday Party

Basically, I would like for you all to suggest songs which might be appropriate for an event like this - it's just a lot of family, really. They want background noise. I need about 4 cds worth of music. I think that they would just be happy with lite FM quietly going on in the background, but they want me to do this because, um, I'm a "DJ." My grandfather does not have any significant interest in music, though I am told "well, I think he might like Sinatra and Dean Martin." I've been told to mix it up a bit, so it's not too samey. I feel strangely overwhelmed by this task, and any help would be very welcome. I'm not that knowledgeable about Sinatra et al, so help with that sort of thing would be fantastic.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 9 September 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Any songs in particular by Nat King Cole or Louis Prima? The more specific, the better. I'm really short on time, and I can't really download records and sort through them.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 9 September 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

you should toss some of Ray Charles's "Modern Sounds in Country & Western Music" it won't sound out of place (probably the best fusion of c/w, gospel, soul, jazz & e-z listening ever).

Huk-L, Thursday, 9 September 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

and of course you'll need to use killing joke's "eighties"!

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

try some Dean Martin or Kate Smith or Sammy Davis, the Andrews Sisters, Doris Day, Danny Kaye, George Shearing, Bing Crosby, Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby Darin, etc. You could even throw in some wierd vocal group arrangements like the "walter Schumann singers" or something.

here is the info on "columbia house party" from 1955 featuring:

Mitch Miller, The Four Lads, Rosemary Clooney, The Buddy Cole Trio, Tony Bennett, Percy Faith, Louis Armstrong, Velma Middleton; Jo Stafford, Paul Weston, Frakie Laine, Liberace, The Norman Luboff Choir and The Dave Brubeck Quartet.

Too late ; Dry bones ; I get a kick out of you ; Taking a chance on love ; Manon ; Honeysuckle rose ; Cripple Creek ; Goin' down the road ; Mona Lisa ; Swanee River ; Hey ho, anybody home ; Swing low, sweet chariot ; Nice work if you can get it ; Camille.

hope that helps...

You're very welcome. That's a playlist on my iPod.

From Jazzbo's marvellous list:

Ain't That A Kick In The Head-Dean Martin
At Last-Etta James

- both seconded, and there's another Lambert, Hendricks & Ross - "Jackie"

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Something by the Birthday Party might come as a surprise... ;)

But seriously (no, that's not a hint to play something by P. Collins), maybe you could sneak in the odd track by Múm, or some Eno off Another Green World (e.g. "Sombre Reptiles"), "The Long Way" and/or "Happiness" by Superpitcher...

willem (willem), Thursday, 9 September 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

anything by al bowly - really, this stuff is peachy by any definition

stelfox, Thursday, 9 September 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Ludo (Ludo), Thursday, 9 September 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

'Jimmy Shand's Party (Introduced by Archie McCulloch)' All your favourite traditional Scottish party choons.

Is it really a good idea to give an eighty year old guy a *surprise* party though?

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 10 September 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

My grandfather is amazingly healthy!

He's not even a little bit Scottish though. 100% full-blooded Italian.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 10 September 2004 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

My grandfather is amazingly healthy!
He's not even a little bit Scottish

These two facts may be linked.
