djdee2005, Friday, 10 September 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Horrible typo in the title of the thread its actually called "Real Big"

djdee2005, Friday, 10 September 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

sounded fairly big. dling from slsk to investigate further.

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

not bad on first listen...

the track after that on the advance is complete rubbish though. it sounds like a gangster rap parody, except that he's serious.

Mil (Mil), Friday, 10 September 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ohh god i've just listened to the whole thing. this is real lowest common denominator stuff, quite embarassing actually.

Mil (Mil), Friday, 10 September 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

this is real lowest common denominator stuff

wtf is this supposed to mean? your comment seems quite embarrassing actually.

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha.

I've posted it up on http://manyshrimp.blogspot.com/

djdee2005, Friday, 10 September 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I heard this a while ago and i got SO FUCKING STOKED!!!!!! Mannies just steamrolling over everyone out there, he's unstoppable!

\(^o^)/ (Adrian Langston), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course I love this song. It's about time Mannie got back on the horse.

adam (adam), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, it's pretty good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 September 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, the cowboy/YEEHAW! part makes it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 September 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"with a bowlegged cowboy stance (yeehaw!)"

"this the part where I give my phone number to all the girls that's hot."

its a nice song.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Saturday, 11 September 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

DICK REAL BIG.

Thanks for putting that up djdee; it's interesting.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 12 September 2004 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
What's the album like?

adam... (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
The album The Mind of Mannie Fresh is bidding fair to be not just the best album I've heard this year...maybe a little bit more.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 18 February 2005 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

and there's no "Really Big" on it that I remember

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 18 February 2005 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The album The Mind of Mannie Fresh is bidding fair to be not just the best album I've heard this year...maybe a little bit more.

I just heard this album for the first time today. OTM. Fun as shit.

Matt Chesnut, Friday, 18 February 2005 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

and there's no "Really Big" on it that I remember

um, I corrected that typo in like the 3rd post.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 18 February 2005 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

proven by science: guys named Matt love Mannie Fresh

and damn, i thought "real big" wasn't on there either but it is, my bad, it's a long-ass album!

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 18 February 2005 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the simple-text skit.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 18 February 2005 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean its really stupid, but really really funny.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 18 February 2005 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah my best album of the year (um, plus a couple of weeks in december) by far

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 18 February 2005 04:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel the way about this that I did about De La Soul Is Dead back in the day: it's a state-of-the-art state of the union address, plus you can dance to it and laugh with it, plus quotable lines all over. Awesome to hear Lil' Wayne biting early LL Cool J style!

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 18 February 2005 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Lil Wayne has had some of my favorite guest verses lately. I only heard Baby's single once but it seemd pretty boring...UNTIL Lil Wayne steps in with all these killer punchlines and that measured big time flow.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 18 February 2005 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Lil Wayne on Solider by Destiny's Child....I LOVE this little facial expression he does at the end...he's supposed to be lip syncing "Now errtime she hears my name she saa-LOOTS!" but he doesn't do the last word, he just gives this sideways self conscious smile and rolls his eyes....the expression on his face is like his dad is singing some old song in front of his friends or talking about sometime dumb he did when he was little and he's embarrassed or something like that....it's darling!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 18 February 2005 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I'm coming around on him..."no bodies with more than 12 tattoos on 'em"

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 18 February 2005 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, how many rappers that started as kids had this kind of a learning curve? Paging Lil Bow Wow.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 18 February 2005 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

he's still only the second-funniest-looking guy to ever guest on a hip-hop/R&B girl group video as "oh my gawd the hottest thing ever" (first place, dude on "Shoop" by Salt-N-Pepa)

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 18 February 2005 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Was that Red Hot Lover Lover Tone on Shoop?....I fucking love that verse he does on Shoop.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 18 February 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this is a fun listen but there's no holy-shit beats like Mack 10 "Connected For Life" or Lil Wayne "Tha Block Is Hot". It just sounds a bit rushed to me. Mannie Fresh is a genius and I think he set his own bar pretty high. He could do better.. but only cause he's Mannie Fresh.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Saturday, 19 February 2005 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man could we PLEASE get away from scorecard listening...you know what, forget it, your way is valid too, sorry

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 19 February 2005 05:15 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm.. does that mean don't have expectations of artists you expect a lot from??

Sorry let me try again for ya - I think this is a fun listen.. It sounds a bit rushed to me.. Mannie Fresh is a genius.. but only cause he's Mannie Fresh.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Saturday, 19 February 2005 06:04 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone read the mannie fresh interview in scratch? he claims to have written 50,000 songs!!! that doesnt even seem possible!!!

this and purple haze have been on steady rotation for me since december. i wish the all the skits on purple haze were seperate tracks so i wouldn't have to listen to them.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 19 February 2005 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Johnny: No, it just means that I'm getting very weary of people (not you necessarily, that's why I took it back) dismissing a whole album or a whole rapper's career on the basis of "his beats aren't as good as they were on "[that old song]" so therefore it's crap". There are a couple of websites that do this exclusively, as if coming up with THE NEW BEAT was incredibly easy and/or the most important thing in the world. The beats are still really hot, the loose feel is intrinsic to the album's concept...oh, now I sound like a dork. I'll save it for a review.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 19 February 2005 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

BEATS: *****
LYRICS: *****
TITLES: *****
FRESHNESS: *****
CONCEPT: ** (I was hoping for the hip-hop equivalent of Hermin's Head, but I guess its more whats on his mind not in it)

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 19 February 2005 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

if anyone knows of a better chorus than this one. please tell me:

"go chubby boy make the block hot
go chubby boy make a pu**y pop"

oh wait theres also:

"From America to China
All I want is vagina"

why is it that when i put this cd in my computer the dirty words in song titles have some letters replaced by asterisks? do you think this decision was made by mannie? who typically makes decisions on these things?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 19 February 2005 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got this record, I love it!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 3 March 2005 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, "Not Tonight" is making me crack up at work.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 3 March 2005 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I almost drove off Highway M listening to that song, Jordan!

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 3 March 2005 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

this album is a masterpiece

strng hlkngtn, Saturday, 23 April 2005 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i wanna hear this! will i be able to deal with 30 tracks though?

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 23 April 2005 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

yes. it is more like the cash money "laugh-in". lil wayne is ruth buzzi.

strng hlkngtn, Saturday, 23 April 2005 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"we take care of y'all, even if you fat, fucked up, or have scars, because everyone is a star"

strng hlkngtn, Saturday, 23 April 2005 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

if it's anything like a cash money you can't do that on television i'm in.

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 23 April 2005 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

well, I don't know.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 23 April 2005 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't wait for the Cash Money's When Animals Attack!!

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Saturday, 23 April 2005 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

You with the monkey shootin' dope, ha?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 23 April 2005 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

There'll be a "Still Fly Too" where the alligators come back for revenge.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Saturday, 23 April 2005 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Revive. "How We Ride" is just killing me right now. I will never get sick of that Al B. Sure! sample.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Saturday, 7 May 2005 05:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't get TOS's reference to De La Soul Is Dead until I heard Mannie say "Take my money, young honey, what the fuck, is you a dummy?/ She actin' like your ass is the boss/ THAT SIGN SAY MCDONALD'S, NOT MCKIM'S/ ACTIN' LIKE YA SHY WITH THEM DIRTY ASS TIMBS" on "Day In The Life". Talk about a "Bitties At The BK Lounge" throwback.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Saturday, 7 May 2005 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I always wanted to do a song that used that "Bitties ya'll be flippin / Uh uh ya buggin" part at the end.

Fresh's beat for the new Baby/Lil Wayne song "Neck Of The Woods" is sick.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Sunday, 8 May 2005 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"Neck of the Woods" is so much better than the last Birdman/Wayne collabo "Get Your Shine On."

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Sunday, 8 May 2005 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Does this album fall
apart at the end real huge?
Is that relevant,

or like complaining,
"Angelina Jolie's lips
are TOO pillowy"?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 13 May 2005 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I kinda like "Get Your Shine On"! nice "Slow Motion"-ripoff beat, although Baby's last verse is pretty terrible ("I'm pimpin', I'm pimpin' pimpin', and I'm dippin', I'm dippin' dippin', and they spinnin', they spinnin' spinnin'" etc.) I can't really get into "Neck of the Woods", mainly because Wayne sounds so bizarre on the hook.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 13 May 2005 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

don't hate on baby,
al! prince said it best with "joy
in repetition"

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 13 May 2005 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I know, but his first verse is pretty decent, and then there's Wayne's, and then I'm ready for another good Baby verse and he comes out saying pimpin' like 8 times in a row.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 13 May 2005 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"Good evening, and welcome to Alligator-Ass Bar-B-Que. What will you be having tonight, ma'am?"
"I'll be having the Cadillac Lobster and the Riviera Shrimp."
"And to drink?"
"1987 20/20 Mad Dog Punch."
"Oh, and what a great fuckin' year. Wasn't that when Salt-n-Pepa broke up? And for you, sir?"
"Whoa, whoa, pump your fuckin' brakes!"

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 13 May 2005 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

is it possible
that Petey Pablo is best
on this album's skits?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 13 May 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I love this song about Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 13 May 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this fine time to point out again that Mannie was 1/2 of the duo that did Freedy's Back (Jason vs. Freddy), a bass track from 1987? Excellent, excellent track it was (and album). But, yeah, since then, he's gotten really big...in more ways than one.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Friday, 13 May 2005 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Mannie Fresh, born Byron O. Thomas was born and raised in the 7th ward of New Orleans. He got his start in music at a young age when he learned how to play the keyboard. He later became a DJ in 1984 with the hip hop group New York Inc. He started to DJ at legendary parties and soon got the attention of emcee William Shatner, who had released a single as part of the S my D Troop in Florida. The duo started a group and debuted with a Miami Bass album entitled Throw up in 1987 on D&D Records. By 1992, they signed with a major label and released the album The Real Deal or No Deal on RCA/BMG Records. It was very successful in New Orleans, but it didn't gain very much attention outside the south. The group split up afterward because the way RCA handled the album.
