VOTING TIME: The ILX 1990s POLL - The Albums

THE E-MAIL TO SEND BALLOTS TO IS: [email protected]

This is the complete, final list. You can vote for up to thirty albums, and the points system is as follows...

1st - 40
2nd - 36
3rd - 32
4th - 29
5th - 27
6th - 25
7th - 24
8th - 23
9th - 22
10 through 30 continue on as such, subtracting one point the lower you go, until 30th place, which gets 1 point. Easy enough.

I hope everyone will contribute a bit of a rave about their favorite album on the list, or a rave about each album on the list. And also, I want everyone to list ONE glaring omission from the albums list. I'm guessing certain albums might receive more than one vote and if one rises above the others, it will receive an honorable mention of sorts.

And now, the list (any errors, please let me know!)

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 11 September 2004 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, voting will end on October 1st at midnight Pacific time.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 11 September 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Can I pick *less* than thirty albums? I can certainly vote for thirty tracks, but I'm not sure there are thirty albums on that list I've actually listened well enough to give them my honest vote...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 11 September 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

30? thats far too many.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 11 September 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no...what happened to Home Is In Your Head by His Name Is Alive? (That was going to be my #3!)

Ernest P. (ernestp), Saturday, 11 September 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF? I thought someone had surely voted for 'Debut'.

Ally C (Ally C), Saturday, 11 September 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

30 too many? in fact i found 43 albums i really like (but only about 15 tracks).

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 11 September 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only heard 50 of these. Should I vote?

', Saturday, 11 September 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The early 90's really was a golden age for albums.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 11 September 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Add N To (X) - Avant Hard

wow. that's entertaining enough, but top 30 of the '90's?

first dEUS album was the best, Throwing Muses - University is over rated. Real Ramona deserves it's place 100% though.

Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness. Oh :'D despite all your rage you're still just a rat in a cage dude. Can't take him seriously at all. They're ok otherwise I suppose don't like them myself but understand where others are coming from.

Oasis – What’s the Story Morning Glory / Spice Girls – Spice

The two most toxic-to-popular culture and music in Britain (if not even further away) releases of the decade. Burn in hell for shame.

Other than those a lot of pretty fine choices in there. Impressed.

'Debut' is as always utterly underestimated.

I'm not helping am I?

(sorry)

grumpy bastard (grumpy_bastard), Saturday, 11 September 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm surprised there's no Black Album. And I would've voted for Missy's 'Da Real World' if I'd thought of it at the time.

Wooden (Wooden), Saturday, 11 September 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

No, you don't have to vote for 30. You can vote for fewer than that. That's what I'll be doing.

I think it's the best solution to the argument, because the people who thought 15 or 20 was way too low would never be happy voting for only 15 or 20 -- but the people who thought 30 was way too high can simply just list 15 or 20.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 11 September 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

No Victoria Williams?

:'(

Kelis - Kaleidescope

She's a great singles artist.

(okay, that's really enough jibber-jabber from me already)

grumpy bastard (grumpy_bastard), Saturday, 11 September 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(I just counted, and I only know 49 of the albums, so I don't think it makes much sense for me to vote for any more than 20.)

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 11 September 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

jed you are insane.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 11 September 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

but the people who thought 30 was way too high can simply just list 15 or 20.

Or four. . .

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 11 September 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

how so skippy?

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 11 September 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

90's = best decade ever.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 11 September 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

entirely too much stereolab mind.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 11 September 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Where are?

Joni Mitchell - Night Ride Home
Joni Mitchell - Turbulent Indigo

I really should have been here when this list was getting compliled I guess :(

grumpy bastard (grumpy_bastard), Saturday, 11 September 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

bahtology, Saturday, 11 September 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, isn't 13 Songs from 1989?

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 September 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Repeater came out in 1990, can we vote for that instead?

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 September 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

things i feel inclined to vote for but know deep inside me that i can't because i don't own them and haven't heard them in full (a selfish post that also serves as a personal wishlist):

Aphex Twin - SAW 85-92
Boredoms - Super AE
Daft Punk - 'Homework'
De La Soul – De La Soul Is Dead
DJ DB - A History of Our World Vol. 1: Breakbeat and Jungle Ultramix
Missy Elliott – Supa Dupa Fly

Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx (been looking for a copy of this for like a year now)

m. (mitchlnw), Saturday, 11 September 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

scratch my Repeater comment. 13 Songs should be disqualified but since it wasn't nominated Repeater shouldn't be added (cuz then someone else might scream "can't I vote for Red Medicine?" and I'd be all ewwww)

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 September 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

if somebody is very worried about one or more of the albums i listed above not placing high enough of the list, feel free to mail me the discs.

m. (mitchlnw), Saturday, 11 September 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i think a late-89 record is fine.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I will never understand this cavalier attitude towards the very simple concept of a decade.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, this is hilarious. I agree but really who cares? it probably wont make the top 100.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

ok while the EPs in containts were both recorded in 1988 (Margin Walker released in 1989), the CD 13 Songs was released in 1990 according to Allmusic. So I guess its matter of whether it matters when the material was originally released. I'm not voting for it based on that but I won't be mad if it shows up on the list cuz Fugazi is the shit.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I didn't realise it was a compilation. More grounds for dismissal!

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i love mitch's blatant request for free cd's. haha!

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I know how he feels. There are probably loads of albums on the list that are better than the ones towards the bottom of my 30, but I haven't heard them.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

mitch i will email you maxinquaye if you promise not to vote for it

actually i own almost all of those and don't really mind ripping, i need to put them on my ipod anyway, i will email you whichever ones you want if you vote for geto boys for #1 song

artiste (artiste), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha the things Mitch feels inclined to vote for are WHAT I am voting for.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 11 September 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I STILL HAVE ONLY HEARD TWO APHEX TWIN SONGS!

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 11 September 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

haha yeah i was gonna say, half or more of mitch's "someday, some way" list is already on mine

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 11 September 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Half of the four albums I voted for are on Mitch's list. (And the other two are the ones I nominated, obviously.)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 11 September 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i realised after posting that list that i'm only left with about 10 albums that i like (and own)!

m. (mitchlnw), Saturday, 11 September 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

it's hard to know whether to vite for my favorite top 30 albums NOW or the 30 albums i listened to the most during the 90s. My list ended up being a mediocre compromise between these two ideals.

Symplistic (shmuel), Saturday, 11 September 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

haha yeah i was gonna say, half or more of mitch's "someday, some way" list is already on mine

-- jess (wt...) (webmail), September 11th, 2004 4:19 PM. (dubplatestyle) (later) (link)

me too! mitch has some good music in his future...

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 11 September 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i think im the only person voting doggystyle #1.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Saturday, 11 September 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Can the top post be amended to include my album picks plz? (Kitchens of Distinction and Grooverider) - they ended up on the singles list for some reason.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 11 September 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I put up a revised list of albums and tracks that no one seems to be looking at...

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 11 September 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry Gear I missed that first time round!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 11 September 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I am pleased we are allowed 30 votes, but that still leaves twenty or so more that I love, and another couple of dozen I like a lot. It was VERY hard on me, emotionally, getting it down to just thirty.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 12 September 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i have found the winnowing process to be much easier by imposing a blanket anti-indie rule

artiste (artiste), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel ya, Martin. The albums list wasn't so bad, since I could start with my top 30 from five years ago as a base. But I never made a tracks list back then, so I had to make a shortlist, which ended up not being short at all : 80 tracks.

I still need to take a few days to stew over my lists before submitting.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

pedantry alert: the Nu-Yorican Soul album is credited to Nu-Yorican Soul as opposed to Masters At Work

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 13 September 2004 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

how many have voted now?

Jamie Fake (the pirate king), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, this thread needs to be bumped occasionally, This is the first time I've seen this thread. I assume there's a singles one too?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'll try and bump that too...

Jamie Fake (the pirate king), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

1990s POLL - TRACKS and ALBUMS (revised)

the todster (the todster), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

So, which list is official?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they're almost identical. The original list had a couple of tracks down as albums, or vice versa. The link above is to a sorted out list.

Jamie Fake (the pirate king), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)
