VOTING TIME: THE ILX 1990s POLL - The Tracks

THE E-MAIL TO SEND BALLOTS TO IS: [email protected]

This is the complete, final list. You can vote for up to thirty tracks, and the points system is as follows...

1st - 40
2nd - 36
3rd - 32
4th - 29
5th - 27
6th - 25
7th - 24
8th - 23
9th - 22
10 through 30 continue on as such, subtracting one point the lower you go, until 30th place, which gets 1 point. Easy enough.

I hope everyone will contribute a bit of a rave about their favorite track on the list, or a rave about each track on the list. And also, I want everyone to list ONE glaring omission from the tracks list. I'm guessing certain tracks might receive more than one vote and if one rises above the others, it will receive an honorable mention of sorts.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 11 September 2004 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, voting will end on October 1st at midnight Pacific time.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 11 September 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

This Chris Bell thing is ridiculous.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a very good song.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 11 September 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Even so.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

timeless.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 11 September 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

When the 80s poll comes, I'm nominating 'When A Man Loves A Woman'.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

For correctness' sake I have to point out that "Snap!" is written like this, with an exclamation mark, not like "Snap".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 11 September 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Grooverider - Hardstep Selection II

this should be on the albums list.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Saturday, 11 September 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Kitchens of Distinction - The Death of Cool

this one, as well.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Saturday, 11 September 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

God, the Blur on this list makes even ME want to vomit.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 11 September 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, I have 35 tracks I want to vote for already! A mixture of Cheese and US indie Rock.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 11 September 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear!:

On the nominating thread, RJG said: I can't change my "say my name" nomination but can I swap "autumn sweater" for the lyte funky ones' "summer girls"?

You have "Summer Girls" on the list, but you've forgotten to delete "Autumn Sweater."

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 11 September 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

(As expected, I have a little over twice as many tracks that I know versus albums.)

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 11 September 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm fairly evenly split, 24 and 28, albums/tracks, respectively.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Saturday, 11 September 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I sincerely hope that the Backstreet Boys win this one.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 11 September 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Gin Blossoms, baby.

Ken, you better be putting them at #1.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 11 September 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

And also, I want everyone to list ONE glaring omission from the tracks list. I'm guessing certain tracks might receive more than one vote and if one rises above the others, it will receive an honorable mention of sorts.

Wait a minute. Is this supposed to be our favourite track not on the shortlist, or a track that we think would have made the top 100 if only it had been nominated? Cause there's a big difference...

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

An album or track that wasn't nominated at all.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 11 September 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I know. Perhaps I didn't explain myself very well. No wait, I did!

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I was really surprised that Pulp showed up twice on my ballot.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 September 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

An example: my favourite album not nominated is Gorky's Spanish Dance Troupe, but the most glaring omission in terms of something that would have most likely come quite high if only someone had nominated it might well be Pixies' Bossanova.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmmm *scratches chin*

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 September 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i just want to casually mention by way of passing that i plan to VOTE GETO BOYS #1 SINGLE

artiste (artiste), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I definitely voted Geto Boys higher than I normally would have to push it up there.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

fwiw my favourite Massive Attack album is "Protection" - i wish it was on the albums list. As for tracks just about every House Jungle and Techno tune i loved from the decade has been glaringly omitted from the noms: I could give you an extra 50 tracks!

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, it's a shame about Protection.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i was listening to it today and realised it's my favourite by far. I have listened to the title track 5 or 6 times today.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I often never got past repeat play of the title track, to be honest.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i hear that!

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

(i often do a mini skip back 30 seconds or so so i can hear her sing "i've leaned on you for years/ now you can lean on me/ that's more than love/ thats the way it should be" again again again. sorry for the mini deraliment)

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Indie dance from the early 90s totally got the shaft--I think "Kinky Afro" might be the sole representation.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Paris Angels - 'Perfume'

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

World Of Twist - 'Sons Of The Stage'

And a few other things, if you take the concept of indie-dance more loosely.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I don't know that one.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

But still, most of the big ones--Primal Scream, Stone Roses, Charlatans, "Only Love Can Break Your Heart," Soup Dragons, EMF, "There's No Other Way," Flowered Up, Jesus Jones--all shut out.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but things like 'Fools Gold' and the best Happy Mondays stuff were 1989. Soup Dragons, EMF, Blur and Jesus Jones can all fuck off and much as I like 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' we hardly needed more St Etienne tracks on the list.

I guess Screamdelica is there to represent all the Primal Scream stuff.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I should clearly have nominated 'Get Higher' by the Moonflowers though.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe not.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

sons of the stage and perfume are both really good and hold up now, i really cant see how this era merits more than a few tracks, maybe you have to be british to get it

artiste (artiste), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba OTM. It would have been nice to have a Charlatans single up there. The Paris Angels track was a great nom. And regardless, the *other* early 90's indie heroes -- the shoegazers -- are fairly well represented, so I'm not complaining.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 11 September 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Soup Dragons, EMF, Blur and Jesus Jones can all fuck off

No they can't, though...

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 11 September 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

so that's why you were lobbying for more votes? for the soup dragons? i voted for 30 albums but the support after 13 or 14 was tepid. should have stuck to 15. i only voted for 12 tracks, way too much blur.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 11 September 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Boo: no "Deep Cover"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 11 September 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i was listening to the "dusties" station this afternoon and remember how much great r&b of the 90s hadn't been nominated. god, r. kelly is so great.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 11 September 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I just want to point out that many of you are morally obligated to vote for "Nann Nigga" and "C'Mon N' Ride It (the Train)," and if you do, I'll consider voting for "Mind Playing Tricks On Me."

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 12 September 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

VOTE TRADING SCANDAL UNCOVERED AT ILX

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 12 September 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

kogan: c'mon ride it (the train) was on my list anyway and nann nigga is close enough that it won't hurt to add it, do we have a deal nudge nudge wink wink

artiste (artiste), Sunday, 12 September 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be the one on 17th Ave. carrying the brown suitcase, know what I mean?

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 12 September 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Going back to Chris Bell, "I Am the Cosmos" was actually released as a single in 1977, so even if most of the album of the same name was unreleased until '93 or whenever it came out, the single shouldn't count.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Sunday, 12 September 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Too bad though, 'cause it's like the best thing ever.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Sunday, 12 September 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

No love for Bittersweet Symphony or Ditty?

Midnite_Vulture, Sunday, 12 September 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear, when does the voting close? My tracks list is almost complete, but I'm still having trouble putting my fave albums in order, and I was wondering how much time I have to do that...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 12 September 2004 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Ist October

1990s POLL - TRACKS and ALBUMS (revised)

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 12 September 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Gah, even with so very many of my favourite tracks omitted, my shortlist of ones that I loved and had to vote for had 59 tracks on it. This is horribly difficult. I can't believe what I've had to leave out completely. When we do the '80s, can we have 100 votes in each, please? (Though I suspect there is a little less I love there - but more in the '70s and '60s (I hope no one thinks these polls can stop soon?), then decreasing in the decades before that. I wonder how many will still be voting when we get back to the '20s? Robert Johnson vs Louis Armstrong, FITE!)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 12 September 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

what is the point of this?

reo, Sunday, 12 September 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

what is the point of this?

To get the Gin Blossoms and the Geto Boys onto some sort of best-of poll.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Sunday, 12 September 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is Primal Scream's "Higher Than The Sun"???
Opus III's "It's A Fine Day"???
Blur's "This Is A Low"???

sent my list off for this and the albums today.
easier to do than i thought.
having a strangely gapped list to choose from made it far less difficult to pick out and order my 30.

rentboy (rentboy), Sunday, 12 September 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

rents, I never would have pegged you for a "this is a low" lover

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 13 September 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Voting for tracks was so difficult because there were just not that many that I both liked and knew.

i have voted already - it was relatively simple despite an initial shortlist of 78. i have chosen to vote tactically rather than do a list of my true favourites - the latter is something that would best published independently of a collaborative poll imo. but obviously all the tracks i've voted for i love deeply tho i'm not sure even half of them will make the final 100.

I think I said I would sit this one out, but I've changed my mind now. More importantly, I've started digging records out from the back of the cupboard that I wouldn't have dreamed of playing any time soon otherwise. This will probably take me until v. close to the voting deadline.

So, er, thanks Gear!, I guess :)

Since I nominated the Chris Bell song, I thought I'd pipe up.

My explanation:

If you look back, when I nominated it, I wrote:

Chris Bell-"I Am The Cosmos" (Is this okay?)

I knew it was an "old" song (as Bell had died in the 70s!) but I was pretty sure it was first on an album in the 90s. I did not know it was a single back in 77. Anyway, I am totally fine with it being withdrawn but I assume Gear or whoever compiled the list decided it was okay and included it.

So don't NOT vote for it just because you think it should have been excluded...

Anyway, what ARE the rules no single artist compilations?

I guess reissues in general are out ? Even something that makes "sense" out of a mess, like Star Time?

What about album 2-fers? Like the Radio City / #1 Record Big Star album? If / When we get to the 70s will we have to vote for these albums separately even though 90%+ of people who own them have the two-pack?

What about bonus / extra tracks unreleased until the boxset came up? does it matter when they were recorded or when they were released?

Or bootlegs (not 'stolen' studio tapes, but "classic" live shows like Neil Young's solo show 5/16/74 bootleg released as Citizen Kane Junior Blues, see http://www.ogctheatre.com/oldgreycat/csny/neilcitizen.htm ) ?

anyway, back to bell -- sorry to cause such a "debacle"

Ha ha - it's OK. I'm afraid I'm going to not vote for it on the grounds that it should have been excluded, though. And maybe other grounds.
