lyrically crap rap records that would make great instrumental albums

Don't know if anyone's questioned this thorny one before, but after re-visiting some old hip hop tonight, I figured there's a dearth of dodgy rap rekkids that had lame-ass lyrics but some worthwhile production and beats on them.

Some random rap albums worthy of mention include:

* Geto Boys "Geto Boys"
* The DOC "No One Can Do It Better"
* OC "Jewelz"
* that third awful Jeru Tha Damaga album
* The Real Roxanne "Bad Sister"
* second JVC Force album "Force Field"
* MC Shan "Play It Again, Shan"

.... you catch my drift?

To The 5 Boroughs. O-dub be damned.

The entire West Coast.

Well, at LEAST Spice-1, DJ Quik, etc.

I really want an instrumental "The Chronic"

tipustiger, Saturday, 11 September 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hawaiian Sophie" - The Jaz

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 11 September 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

* Geto Boys "Geto Boys"
* The DOC "No One Can Do It Better"

What the fuck?
I mean, the whole list is sorta wtf but those two in particular.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Saturday, 11 September 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

MADVILLIANY, but it's more (for me) that the delivery is crap. my fave song i think is the r&b one

jake b. (cerybut), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Jaylib - champion sound. the lyrics are kinda shit but i still love it

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Saturday, 11 September 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

EFIL4ZAGGIN
Paul's Boutique*

*I actually got to see the Dust Bros. recreate this live on 4 turntables about 10 years ago on the Santa Fe Loading Docks in downtown Los Angeles and it was at that point that I realized how much better the Beastie Boys were if they didn't open their mouths nor make the music.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 11 September 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm agreeing on the WHa? with the Geto Boys album.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 11 September 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I really want an instrumental "The Chronic"

Agreed - it's not even so much the hatefullness as how totally uninspired they are with it, plus all the guest MCs spend waaay too much time talking about how great Dre is that they could have invested in actually, y'know, building their own personas. Not sure if I wouldn't miss the sound of Snoop and Warren G's voices, tho.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 11 September 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah right, D.O.C. writes "lame-ass lyrics". Better throw out that copy of "Straight Outta Compton" while you're at it.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 11 September 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The blood? The Chronic is sick lyrically. It pretty much single-handedly changed the rap game in terms of how certain gangsta tropes were to be expressed, especially wrt the more remorseful thug shit

th, Saturday, 11 September 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"crap" delivery on Madvillainy was sort of the point - you say "crap", I say "raw"

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Saturday, 11 September 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean D.O.C.'s record is ridiculously hot on the lyrical tip.
The Chronic would not be the same without Dre's semi-awkward baritone (never mind Snoop's suave appeal). Geto Boys is just ridiculous...And I'm with Space is the Place re: Madvillainy as well.

Also I like the vocals on Paul's Boutique.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Saturday, 11 September 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

djdee otm. a geto boys album without lyrics???!!!! the black humour is what makes them great - i mean, some of the music is funky, but wouldn't hold my interest without the twisted rhymes.

my suggestion? her space holiday - "the young machines". confessions a bit blunt and juvenile on that one, gorgeous backdrop though.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 11 September 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck, i missed out on the word "rap" in the title so scrap my suggestion. my comment re: geto boys stands, though.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 11 September 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Influence, schminfluence, there's a thousand better remorseful thug tracks than the ones on "The Chronic", some of them made before it ("Ghetto Bastard" springs to mind.) I mean I guess "Li'l Ghetto Boy" is ok, but it just sounds so obviously tokenist and pandering and totally unconvincing in the context of the album, and not in a suitably OTT way, either. I like Gangsta Rap when it's dumb and cartoonish, and I like it when it's smart and serious, but "The Chronic" isn't outrageous enough to be the former and not nearly smart enough to be the latter. I do agree that Snoop's flow is wicked, but lyrically I think his persona shines through a lot more on his first solo album (or, well, the singles, anyway, haven't listened to the record in a while.)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 11 September 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I doubt most beats would sound that good without rapping, they'd just sound like boring house. Most of the exceptions I can think of (i.e. 1-900-Hustler, NY State of Mind, Nuthin But a G Thang) have great rapping on them.

Symplistic (shmuel), Saturday, 11 September 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Any and all Cash Money records. Mannie Fresh is fantastic ...

Chris O., Sunday, 12 September 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Seconded, except i really rather like juve.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 12 September 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF indeed re: The DOC.

I always wanted an instrumental version of that first Slum Village album.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 12 September 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

of course Mannie Fresh is great, but the Cash Money instrumentals CD (got it for $2) is kinda boring. The tracks need the MCs. Even when their lyrics aren't great, the southern drawls sound fantastic. Even when I'm not even concentrating on the rapping, somehow it makes the beats sound really good.

Keith McD (Rob McD), Sunday, 12 September 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude the lyrics to Cash Money albums are fucking hilarious! You can't listen to them w/out lyrics.

"Anaconda" to thread.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 12 September 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, most CMB cds after 400 Degreez are pretty limited lyrically (BG said himself that he could've came much harder with Chopper City In The Ghetto), though there are still tons of of classic verses and Lil Wayne is a genius with the verbs. But pre-400 Degreez before CMB went platinum UNLV and Magnolia Shorty and all them were fucking amazing lyricists, BG especially, i mean where else could you hear a 15 year old dope fiend who's voice hasn't broken rap about drug addiction and the trap so eloquently over jaw droppingly tight beats.

scg, Sunday, 12 September 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno if it's just a difference in how Fresh is recording now, but has anyone noticed how CMB vocals seem to be alot higher in the mix than they used to be?

scg, Sunday, 12 September 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete Rock and CL Smooth's whole catalog... Common's Resurrection

mucho, Sunday, 12 September 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the list of crap hip/trip hop cds that would sound better with an mc would be longer

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 12 September 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

gang starr

Symplistic (shmuel), Sunday, 12 September 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I'm gonna disagree about CL and Gang Starr (although I can see why some ppl wouldn't like them) but Common on Resurrection? Insanity.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 13 September 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

beats AND rhymes, jesus people, did you miss a meeting?!!?!

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 13 September 2004 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry I guess we're not real hip hop like you.
i like some downtempo.

oops (Oops), Monday, 13 September 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I know it's not as monumentally important and artistically challenging as, say, grime, but it's nice to help when you wanna relax, which I often do.

oops (Oops), Monday, 13 September 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

* Geto Boys "Geto Boys"
* The DOC "No One Can Do It Better"

What the fuck?
I mean, the whole list is sorta wtf but those two in particular.

OTM....man both those albums rule lyrically....

Endtroducing owns this thread. Thankfully there aren't too many words, but every single vocal snippet on this record is utter krap.

Huh?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 5 February 2007 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

The Spank Rock album and about half of the new Clipse album.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 5 February 2007 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

My answer would be 360 Degrees of Power by Sister Souljah. Her lyrics aren't actually weak, but her "rapping" is so amateurish I wish I could just listen to the Bomb Squad beats which are nice troughout the LP.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 5 February 2007 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

The Amazon reviewer for Lord Willin wishes there were an instr. version.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Monday, 5 February 2007 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

I wish I could also have a copy of Digital Bullet without RZA the rapper. It's got the best set of beats he's ever put on one album, and most of the guests are cool, but I've never been eable to stand his flow and mannerisms in large doses.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 5 February 2007 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

everyone saying they want an instrumental of THe Chronic just listen to some funkadelic jesus you little whiners

Apple Juice (Apple Juice), Monday, 5 February 2007 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

SOnic Youth's catalog

mucho (mucho), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

haha
i agree w/ everything i said in this thread except where i selectively chose to replace 'cash money' with 'big tymers'... cash money rappers were great all around, though.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:43 (nineteen years ago)

deej way OTM upthread about the DOC and Geto Boys!!! Come on!

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

i suppose its also funny that i said 'on the lyrical tip' but dated hip-hoppery is great message board fodder

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 5 February 2007 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

on the lyrical tip
you beat me?
that'd be a miracle whip

also OC wasn't garbage lyrically at all.

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

about half of the new Clipse album.

the table is the table (treesessplode), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

i have a vague memory that the Spank Rock album waas released as an instrumental version as well, no doubt just on vinyl for the hardcore ..
i have to totally go with you on that one Marcello.

kind of a waste of a time machine to use it to get 1/51th of the way to banning someone who hasn't posted in like 7 years

ALL-TIME, yo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulz7lkz2vBw

I'm tryin to keep my aces and my deuces all together
I'm thinkin of self-murder I know I won't live forever
This chronic got me noid I need to get a job
but instead I wanna sell dope hang on a rope and steady mobb
I'm wakin up in the morning thinkin of death as I break out in a cold sweat
I'm havin dreams of a whole family put to rest
Visions of a dead man body bags
and all the youngsters gettin their cap peeled over coloured rags
I write about murder and death cause thats all in the hood
comin up strong while in crack yo G its all good
Describin a way of life that they don't understand G
So Imma keep breakin it down until dey understand me
You see its real G and jealousy it roam my block
Thats why I'm never leavin the house without my plastic glock
Cause if they want it they'll take it and kill for it
And if its worth sumptin then blood gettin spilled for it
My mother thinks I'm goin crazy
And when I leave the house she just stares out the window
I think I'm being followed everytime I leave my home
Havin these fatal thoughts of gettin chrome to my dome

[ CHORUS ]
18--187 me say the murder the murder he wrote
18--187 me say the murder the murder he wrote--- blooooow

[ VERSE 2 ]
Did things up in the past that I regret at 22
And when I hit 23 I hope I'm livin well as you
Its good to be alive in 93 I guess that so
But if I gotta go I gotta go I gotta go
I guess I'm just a soldier with a song out of the streets black
Stressin of that chronic sack but I feel death is knockin at my bed
Sleep walkin with my pistol in the middle of the night

Wakin up inside my hooptie holdin my glock full of fright
Violent in this art thats only because its comin from a G to the heart
Got friends that have died and I mourn for their families
Bringin flowers to dey graves everytime I get a chance G
Nuthin like a old school homie from the hood
Which are right or wrong doin dirt doin good
And now I know inside I'll never see my boy again
I fie myself always pour brew out fo my friends

CHORUS

[ VERSE 3 ]
I'm keepin all my pictures from my homies up in jail
If I told you what dey did it will problably turn your pale
I used to hang wit killers and I didn't even know
Wrestlin wit my homies as a youngster age 4
Now half of dem is dead and the rest is in the jailhouse
Writin to me monthly givin they homies sumtin to rap about
Tell me do my music and don't trip off what dey say
Thinkin to myself I might just be in there one day
Some stayed about the big house and still slangin yay
And now dey stayin under diction of feds everyday
Tryin to wash their money they wanna go on tour G
Gettin into the business learn about the industry
Try to help em out doin everythang I can
I still gotta worry bout the next jealous man
My homies gettin robbed so they rob somebody else
You can see it never stops let that story tell itself
I'm walkin wit my head down pervin in the rain
Thinkin deep askin myself am I insane
I think about that daily and I'm leavin on that note
and thats the definition of the 187 that he wrote
