Connor Deasy from the Thrills - It's so horribly horrible.

peter dee (peter dee), Saturday, 11 September 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Last night I heard that Breaking Benjamin hit. With some specific exceptions, I really can't stand that type of voice that I will call the "Cumbersome" voice.

James Taylor. Just argghhh.

With some specific exceptions, I really can't stand that type of voice that I will call the "Cumbersome" voice.

Funny, we were discussing the geneology of the "Cumbersome" / "Higher"
voice at last night's FAP. We concluded that Eddie Vedder was not to blame for what he hath wrought.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 11 September 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The Alan Cumming lookalike from Yellowcard. The faux Brit from the Killers. Coheed and Cambria. And Robert Smith, as usual.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Saturday, 11 September 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Seconded on the guy from the Thrills. I was listening to "Whatever Happened to Corey Haim" the other day and I want to like it..I mean, it sounds all nice'n'that, it's about Corey Haim FFS, and it has a bit at the end that sounds like the theme tune to Mork and Mindy. But that guy's voice, urgh, it just ruins it.

Dido as well, but I'm not so convinced she's ruining any otherwise enjoyable songs.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 12 September 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

dude from delays, although i kind of love his voice too

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 12 September 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, at some moments he sounds exactly like Matt Murphy (Superfriends/Flashing Lights) which is really flirting with the annoying, but then he has this whole extra range which somehow makes it all better.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 12 September 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he sounds like Andy Sturmer from Jellyfish.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 12 September 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

also that fucker from death cab for cutie.

Yes, Ben Gibbard gets my vote.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 12 September 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, I hadn't thought of that one cindy, and I'm not disagreeing, but I think my sentence above will mean the same with his name in place of Matt's.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 12 September 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff Ott.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Velvet Revolver guy, ex STP. His name escapes me for some odd reason right now. Just as well though, terrible voice and god those HIDEOUS bootcuts.

I'm American, Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Aja OTM.
I hate that wavering Chris Cornell thing. He has a lot to answer for.

paulhw (paulhw), Sunday, 12 September 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy Smokes...is that longtime missing-in-action Aja above?

Most annoying voice? JOSS STONE.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. Who are you?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

That must have answered your question, B.A.R.M.S.

Haha, it sure did!

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

guy from maroon five anyone? i sound like that at high altitudes singing through a rolled up paper.

darraghmac, Sunday, 12 September 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, thank you, I'll take the Maroon Five guy. Just caught a bit of their third single, and Jesus H. Christ what a braying brat.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 12 September 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

David Byrne on Talking Heads '77. after that, I'm mostly cool with him, but there are sounds he makes on that album that I just cannot stand.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 12 September 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Richard Ashcroft to thread.

Actually, to be honest, Kim Gordon on some of Sonic Nurse.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 13 September 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there singers who annoy you whom you like because they annoy you? Diamanda Galas or Sainkho Namtchylak can be annoying but they kind of need to be. Meredith Monk, however, never seems annoying to me. Bjork kind of annoys me too. Sometimes, not most of the time, I find Robert Plant annoying in a way that detracts a little but I forgive it because I like the rest. Happens more in Zeppelin than in his recent stuff.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 13 September 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Darraghmac, Monday, 13 September 2004 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

right this very moment Morrissey singing You're THe One For Me Fatty is stuck in my head

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 13 September 2004 05:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"Are there singers who annoy you whom you like because they annoy you?"

hm, well I'm sort of with you on Bjork, although with her I think it's more often her lyrics that I feel this way about. That is except for that mrrrrrrreeeeoowwp! thing she does sometimes which reminds me of my old cat (in a good way). And I think it's hard to like Nardwuar without having a pretty significant appreciation for how annoying his voice is. Rufus Wainwright has a voice that annoys me sometimes, but then maybe that is all there is to that. Disqualified. Ron Sexsmith? Though he's veering into just unlikeable as well. This is actually quite difficult to answer. I'll get back to you if I think of anyone more deserving.

The dude from Modest Mouse.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 September 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there singers who annoy you whom you like because they annoy you?

Plant, yeah. With Bjork I hated her voice initially but grew to appreciate and not get annoyed by it. With Plant, it's still grating - just that there's something compelling to the grate.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 13 September 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Isaac Modest Mouse. Ruins what might otherwise be excellent albums.

Rocco, Monday, 13 September 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

he from green day

amateur!!st, Monday, 13 September 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Thinking of Plant's progeny: Oddly I don't find Perry Farrell - who's almost like a more obnoxious Robert Plant - annoying at all in this way. In the context of Ritual I actually find his voice very pleasant and well-suited. Jack White doesn't annoy either. I actually see where the Chris Cornell one is coming from - all that bellowing and shrieking and "I mean this!" is annoying - but "Jesus Christ Pose" wouldn't be the same without it. Billy Corgan is another one who's annoying and can even detract sometimes but is also essential to the Pumpkins' sound.

It's hard to say how I feel about Bjork. I don't love her voice in and of itself but I appreciate what it can do for her songs I guess. Maybe one reason I never listen to Homogenic and am ambivalent about Medulla is that her voice dominates things so much on them. On Post, the songs are more important. On Vespertine the sounds seem more important and she sings softer most of the time. At the same time, her voice certainly plays an important defining role to those.

Thea (Thea), Monday, 13 September 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I know it's not really singing, but I hate J-Kwon's voice. He sort of sounds like he's deaf. Stephen Jenkins from Third Eye Blind strikes me the same way.

Talent Explosion (Talent Explosion), Monday, 13 September 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"Are there singers who annoy you whom you like because they annoy you?"

So many! Ethel Merman, Mick Jagger, Claudine Longet, Judy Garland, David Surkamp, Burl Ives, Jordy, Melanie, Gregg Allman, Melissa Manchester, Damon Albarn, Rita Pavone, Jobriath, Craig Wedren, Taime Downe, Britney Spears, Gene Pitney, Liza Minnelli, Charlie Daniels, Nick Gilder. And the girl who sings the "how he makes me quiver" line in "Stay Awhile" by the Bells.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, the backing voice in "Come Undone" is a good example. It's really annoying in a shrill, nagging way - but it becomes catchy/memorable and effective because of that. You remember it and react to it because it's nagging you.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I find it hard to stand any of Christina Aguilera's singles from the past 2 or 3 years due to her incessant vocal gynmastics. Her performance in "Genie In A Bottle" is just about perfect though.

Yes to Cornell's Audioslave singing, although I think his voice worked well with the music on SG's last 2 records.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I was only thinking of Cornell in Soundgarden. Audioslave is shit.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Just heard the new Alicia Keys single, and man, I want to like her, but there's something so strained about her voice -- maybe it's just on this song -- and not quite nasal, but sinus-y, somehow, like the back of the nose, top of the throat? So forced.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

That reminds me of how flat and lacking in dynamics Celine Dion sounded today.

There's a bloke in a band called Cherry Ghost who I saw earlier this week. The music was okay, but I couldn't get behind the vocals because they reminded me of someone else's voice and I spent the whole gig trying to work out who it was he was trying to sound like.

When all is said and done, I really don't know why I don't like Radiohead. They seem to be just the sort of thing I would love. But when I read this thread title, the name of 'Thom Yorke' appeared written across the sky of my brain. So Thom Yorke. With the exception of his duet with PJ Harvey, 'This Mess We're In,' which inexplicably is one of my favorite songs. I don't care at all for that woman's voice either.

the dude from clap your hands say yeah gets my vote. not that he's annoying me right now, because i'm managed to avoid hearing him for going on five years. but anyone who can make it through an entire album of his horrible, horrible voice deserves a medal for endurance.
