UTFO all the way.

I only found out the history to these tracks this year. I heard them on Electro 6 when I was an embarassingly bad breakdancer at the age of 11, but they mix two of the tracks together so from 1985 until about six months ago I thought Roxanne was part of UTFO. Now that I've downloaded the original tracks I've got to say the UTFO one is excellent, the others are crappy cash-ins.

Roxanne Shanté’s "Roxanne’s Revenge" is the fiercest, funniest, best of the Roxanne battle by far, and Shanté’s one of my five or six favorite rappers ever - but actually The Real Roxanne album is more consistently passionate and lively than either of the Shanté albums. Christgau's review: "Roxanne Shanté's the real Roxanne. This one's the real Lisa Lisa - smart, fast-talking, Puerto Rican and proud, up on the get down."

Yeah, but the "real roxanne" one was on the UTFO album. So it was more of a continuation of the story than a cash-in by an outsider. I mean, presumably she had some connection to the group. Plus it was great! "I don't like your rap cuz your rap is dead / Educated Rapper no sense in your head" !

Not as good as UTFO, though.

She said she had to go but she'd be back by 8
so I called at 9 to arrange a date
(did you take her to the beach?)
That's what we planned,
but she stood me up
Roxanne Roxanne

Yeah, Shante all the way!

I swear, you can practically HEAR her grinning.

The real question is: "Roxanne's Doctor" -vs- "Roxanne's Parents"

I have a copy of "Roxanne's Doctor" by Dr.Freshh, but i've never actually heard "Roxanne's Parents" before.

Roxanne Shante, hands down, my personal fave being "Go On Girl", from the Colors soundtrack:

"Set you on the table with a plate & cup / Say grace / and then eatcha ass up!"

Roxanne Shante is wickedly funny and intelligent. Whether she wrote her lyrics or not is another contention (Marley Marl, maybe?), but her layrical put-downs and feminine jousts are akin to Jay-Z's to some extent.

I am reminded of the criminally underplayed "Big Mama" track were she tears strips outta Latifah, MC Lyte, Yo-Yo, Isis, Salt'n'Pepa and Monie Love, etc. This has to be one of the most deft and deadly put-down cuts in hip-hop, period. Fucking hilarious, and it has also been sampled DJ Shadow and Death In Vegas to ill effect.

There ain't many female MC's who can really touch her around today either. God Bless her!

shante is the living embodiment of the word "sassy", and god bless her.
