alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

saul williams easy

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, but that's more of a crush than anything.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably Tim Finney, but he doesn't post much anymore.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

It used to be Josh Kortbein when he posted, now I don't know.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ramosi/Darrenscoq/Le Coq/LC

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I find myself agreeing with Ned a lot of the time (although his fandom for indefensible silly putty schlock like Destiny's Child is truly puzzling) and admire his even-keeled, zen-like tone.

There are several others I agree with on many an occaision, but to name them risks the possibility of leaving someone out, so I shan't do'dat.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

All the other korny indie fuks.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Perpetua or Miccio, pop-friendly, but unafraid of copping to a soft spot for the alt-rock.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

ditto on Miccio, for being proud of his (our) generation's 90's alt-rock heritage.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Ummm...nobody, really.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

There aren't many old guys with a taste for soul and reggae around, so it'll have to be Dr C for me. Not that I identify much. Oh, and I generally like Duane's lists of what he's listening to.

Can you tell I'm almost never around this board these days?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Which other ILM'ers have the most similar taste in music to yours?

Most similar/dissimilar tastes on ILM

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

That's true, Martin! Would be nice to hear from you more often.

I've actually come to appreciate AlexNYC's bluntness quite a bit.

Bimble (bimble), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Jed, maybe. If only he didn't make fun of grime.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Cozen?

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

In terms of the actual content of what I am most excited about, not really anybody. (Maybe I will eventually have more in common with the new jazz contigent, but I'm just now beginning my walk with Matthew Parker.)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, o' course.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

@rockist: thanks for the links but i am not only talking about taste. it's more about expressing what you think about certain music. pinefox has got a very matter of fact way i absolutely can relate to.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I have drifted
further and further away.
[I got no last line.]

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, when will you see that Dan's not the boy for you?!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't think of anybody.
Cuz I'm special.

Nowell, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, I adore the Pinefox and love talking to him, but I can't identify with him on music at all, less than just about anyone here - his tastes in music of the last 10-15 years are almost the opposite of mine.

Thanks, Bimble, but I kind of left due to threads I started getting bugger all response, while a thread on the drumming on one Radiohead album track (a made-up example, but you know what I mean) could get far more. Also, all the discussion about things I do like seems to be over and done with before I hear the track, because I don't download. (And from last summer until this March, I had major eye problems, so some things had to go, as my reading slowed hugely.) It seemed not for me. Stevem lured me back with these polls, but I'm still only looking at very few non-poll threads.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I'm not special, I just have trouble coming up with interesting things to say and/or ask about music.

Nowell, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i was actually going to say adam and it makes me happy that he said (possibly) me too.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Good. Now stop laughing at grime.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

but i'm much more tetchy than he is, of course.

xp!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

a thread on the drumming on one Radiohead album track (a made-up example, but you know what I mean)

Ha, I love that thread.

Martin, you should respond to my brass band threads. You've usually got a good couple hours before they disappear off the bottom. :>

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

every time I put on a new dress, I think, 'Would Amateur!!!!!!!!!!!!!st approve? And would he like the matching panties?'

rumple, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaahaha

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not pretending to be interested in every kind of music beyond indie/alt-rock, Jordan! The only brass band music I have, and I really like it, is some Rebirth Brass Band, who are magnificent (and who I thought I had mentioned on ILM before), and a track of the Nutley Brass covering a Ramones number (Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment, from memory).

Anyway, you know the feeling. It was one thread that kind of settled it for me. Homer Banks died, so I started an RIP thread. He was part of Stax's second writing team, and made a few terrific records himself - not a giant by any means, but far from insignificant. I think I got two or three replies. It was the same kind of difference in focus you see in a mag like Mojo: this month, The Beatles: March 23-26th 1967; next month, The Animals; following month, All Black Music Ever (yes hyperbole). The only soul threads that got anywhere seemed to be hugely general ones (what are your favourite soul tunes/singers, that kind of thing). This isn't really meant as criticism, just why I thought it wasn't for me.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Never stopped me, Martin!

Roger Glover & Guests - The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I was going to say jack cole, Custos & Alex in NYC - until I checked the old thread and saw that I already said that last time. So Donna Brown or something.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I remember you mentioning Rebirth before, that's why I brought it up. :> You're way ahead of most people!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

There's not much you can do on a RIP thread though - you either make a smartarse comment, or attempt to make a meaningful comment that will completely fail to some up the fact that a human just died. The idea of argueing over the importance of somebody's career just after they died just seems tasteless.

Xpost x 2

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

>I think I got two or three replies.

Some threads stay quiet but I don't think they go unappreciated.

(Jon L), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin- I think we had this conversation once but I hope you keep posting on what you want -- I posted a thread about flamenco at the weekend, there were no replies but I hope a googler or someone will reply someday...what milton/scott said too.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah and keep in mind it does seem slower here on weekends sometimes.

Prob Monetizing Eyeballs or whatever he's called right now, someone like that. TRUX ROX, etc.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr. Diamond aka Broheems aka Monetizing Eyeballs aka Godknowswhatnext, who appears to be passionate about the same things as myself. What can I say - he's got excellent taste!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I like his measured but fervent enthusiasms for shit

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear he's really into "baggy".

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

diamond, increasingly, in terms of his tastes. there are lots of others i enjoy reading, but i'm not sure what qualifies as "identifying" with someone.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, "Reed" 'Diamond' "Moore" must have a universal touch because he's pretty near the top of my list too.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to think he was pretty cool.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

until what? he ran over your kitten?

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

until she turned into a sourpuss

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i remember getting into some ilx catfight w/r0b ... what seems like ages ago? maybe two years? i think we even insulted each other. i have no idea what that was about. he has really wide-ranging tastes and is passionate and smart and i think our preferences in music criticism are reasonably similar as well.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Janne Karllson or milton

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

aw man, I just saw this -- thanks for the props yo. I love y'all back (really - I respect the tastes of all of you.) Actually I was avoiding posting to this because I remember the LAST time one of these "posters tastes" threads came up I mentioned a couple people and forgot to name a few others I like, then felt bad. But yeah, AMatuerist, I don't remember what the fight was about ... I remember being irked at you for bugging Chuck all the time, but I've long since learned to just sit back and let the chips fall where they may as far as that particular battle is concerned. and I think we do share a lot of the same bugbears re: criticism; I really enjoyed that "formalist criticism" thread you started, that was great. I didn't join in though cuz I guess I've said my piece (perhaps, a tad too strongly) elsewhere. And Nicole I like you a lot, I hope we can be friends again. Great Lakes State pride! Si Quaeris Peninsulam Amoenam Circumspice!!

Reed Moore (diamond), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 04:33 (twenty-one years ago)

colin the australian music mole, b/c of his never-ending quest to understand all sorts of music ... and to tie it all in somehow w/ his all-abiding love of all things gary numan.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Eibar, you are very kind as usual.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i enjoy mojo's/reed moore's/mr. diamond's posts b/c of his passionate attachment to music that i either don't like or don't get. i don't mean this in a backhanded way -- i mean it in that it helps me UNDERSTAND what people see and hear in stuff that i just ain't feelin' for whatever reason.

(the same goes for amateurist, chuck eddy, and [god forbid] miccio)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

As has been proven many times, Siegbran's posts can usually be treated as gospel on their given topics.

M Carty (mj_c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

This topic has been done many many times.

Siegbran, Stevem also, "david acid" sometimes, Vahid of course, Spencer, Andy sometimes, probably loads more I'm forgetting.

Perhaps Alba these days too.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, Stevem and Barima deserve a mention from me too, on dance music and a lot of what I like these days.

As for threads with very few responses not going unappreciated, that may or may not be the case, but they don't make for insteresting conversation.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Subjectivity to thread.

nickalicious always seems to say things that i identify with. i just noticed some championing of tony williams lifetime on the fusion thread, also. bravo!
