soft, orchestrated pop albums that i love and have listened to this morning.

i cant quite decide which i like better, but paris 1919 is on now, so im leaning that way.

And the winner is: Stormcock.

I'm siding with Cale on this one, as much as I like Scott 3.

A New Society vs Tilt would be a tougher call, though.

I still want to actually listen to Paris 1919, whereas I only think I want to listen to Scott 3.

i havent heard a new society. is it tilt-like?

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"scott 3". i was kind of underwhelmed by "paris 1919"--i think it's a very good record, but it didn't seem to have the spark of feverish discovery that illuminate scott walker's early records.

anyway they have very different aesthetic programs so i'm not even sure of the revelance of the comparison.

Which ones were those then? Michael Buble or Rod Stewart's Great American Songbook?

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd go for Paris 1919 anyday. It's just one of my all time faves. On the other hand I haven't heard Scott Walker so I'm checking him up right now.

strom (strom), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

both favorites of mine, but I'm gonna actually say Scott 3. Another record I put up there is the first Colin Blunstone record.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

is "scott 3" soft? it's kind of big and brassy and outlandish much of the time. esp. all the brel covers.

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

the only song that is really big IMO is "we came through". and i guess "funeral tango" and a couple others are brassy in parts, but the other songs are pretty soft. i mean, whatever. you dont have to call them soft, i dont care.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

no, this needs to be resolved.

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i think scott3 and scott4 are pretty soft, insofar as they are less show-tuney, quieter, and more introspective than scott1 or scott2. maybe soft isnt the right word - like i say, im not terribly wedded to my own description.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

im excited to hear stormcock and this colin blunstone record and a new society.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"stormcock" is a most unfortunate title, but it's a good record

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Paris 1919 rather marred by the stomping glamrock Macbeth

bham, Thursday, 16 September 2004 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i havent heard a new society. is it tilt-like?

The parallels between John Cale & Scott Walker are stronger on Music for a new Society and Tilt, I'd say. They're both gloomy "avant"-rock albums with melodies so stunningly beautiful and a production so impenetrable that I keep asking myself wtf is going on.

the todster (the todster), Thursday, 16 September 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"stormcock" is good?!!? it's brilliant!

It's very English — but interesting. Love the David Bedford orchestrations. Really, all these records are great.
