Or do you think they are both "Airheads"?

(This thread also functions as a Classic or Dud|Search and Destroy|Say Something Interesting About...)

AND NO MENTIONING XTC OR SMASHMOUTH! NOTHING BUT PAIN LIES IN THAT DIRECTION!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Thomas effin Dolby - his "The Flat Earth" is still one of my favorite albums EVER. And yeah, I know my blogshares value is going to take a hit for saying that.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

never made out to oingo boingo in high school, so dolby takes it. plus dolby was produced by george clinton, and danny elfman wasn't and plus does the same score every time.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Dolby, by a length, though I like them both. Those first two Dolby albums are classics. "One of Our Submarines", "Europa and the Pirate Twins", "Cloudburst on Shingle Street", "Mulu the Rain Forest", "Screen Kiss" - sigh. Plus, he produced some incredible Prefab Sprout albums. But Oingo's still good for a rush of happy feelings, associated with the mid-80s albums.

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Oingo Boingo haed a few good tracks, but I'd sooner listen to Thomas Dolby any day of the week.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Oingo Boingo are the XTC Thomas Dolby.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Not my favorite stuff either way, but I'd still definitely side with Thomas Dolby. I never liked Flat Earth that much, but I give Dolby credit for following up the first album with something quite a bit different and pretty well-done.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Thomas Dolby. Wireless (the UK, US and Japanese pressings all have different tracks) & all the 12" single b-sides on his Venice in Peril label, Blinded By Science ep, Flat Earth.

(Jon L), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll stand up for you, Oingo Boingo! Mostly because no one else will.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Oingo Boingo recorded "Nothing Bad Ever Happens".

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

What was that Oingo Boingo song that had the really creepyish lyrics about little boys or something?

I'll take Dolby for this, but Danny Elfman's film scores are TEH SHIT (and I must disagree with you greatly about his scores sounding the same Mr. B2D - Nightmare Before Christmas =\= Beetlejuice =\= The Incredible Hulk =\= etc).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I will say though that Danny Elfman's film score style has gotten quite a bit more transparent/less distinctively Danny Elfman in the more recent years, compared to back in the Beetlejuice/Edward Scissorhands days.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"lalalalalalalalalalala" - a random Danny Elfman film score

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"lalalalalalala" - a random film score by anyone who has ever done a film score

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude come on; I like Elfman's film scores but you can't deny that he went through a definite "every film must feature a children's choir singing 'lalalalalalala' on alternating whole steps over swooping strings playing something in a minor key".

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

In Pee Wee's Big Adventure? No. In Beetlejuice? No. In The Simpsons? No. In Batman? No. In Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? No.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Now, JOHN WILLIAMS, right there is a film scoring duder who makes the same score every time. Shit, the Harry Potter them IS the Empire theme from Star Wars, in another key.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I can only right now think of two Danny Elfman scores that featured children singing, one of which is Edward Scissorhands, the other being Nightmare Before Christmas, which was a MUSICAL in which EVERYONE sang.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm more of a Jerry Goldsmith man meself.
(xpost)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

When did The Simpsons movie come out?

Also, HE MOST ABSOLUTELY DID DO THIS IN BEETLEJUICE AND BATMAN.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(continuing from up there, regarding children's choirs)

Chicago? No. Men In Black? Not really. Planet of the Apes? Maybe, I didn't see it. Mars Attacks? I don't think so, but I was really high.

x-post you're probably right about those two Dan but I really don't see this as that common a theme in his scores

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, looking back on scores he's done, he comes off as a remarkably VERSATILE arranger.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

For instance, I would've never guessed in a million years that it had been him who did the score work for Good Will Hunting.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

See also: "Scrooged", "To Die For", "Big Fish", "Men In Black II", "Batman Returns"...

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Even so, I would still say he's a huge bit more versatile of an arranger than like every single other film music composer this side of Morricone.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Oingo Boingo ft. Thomas Dolby "She Blinded Me With Weird Science"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that I'm going to take you seriously if you think all of John Williams' scores sound the same...

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

aw SNAP!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Williams scores: note in particular "Jaws", "Schindler's List", "Amistad" and "Catch Me If You Can".

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

You could totally take the music from Catch Me If You Can and play back scenes from any Indiana Jones movie and it would totally fit.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just being an asshat now Dan. I'm sorry.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Oingo Boingo ft. Thomas Dolby "She Blinded Me With Weird Science"
Someone needs to open up ProTools and do that mashup RIGHT FUCKING NOW!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

...and email it to me as a high-bitrate mp3

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

That mashup would be the coolest thing since they first said "what if we sliced the bread first?"

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Thomas Dolby's synthesizer made Foreigner actually sound GOOD on parts of Foreigner 4 (Urgent is the best song they ever did!)

One of Our Sumarines has brilliant lyrics- can you say that about any Oingo Boingo song?

Thomas Dolby rules!

Queen Electric Butt Prober BZZT!! BZZZZZT!! (Queen Electric Butt Prober BZZ), Thursday, 16 September 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Can you do heavy metal in Oingo Boingo? You can't do it in Dobly.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 16 September 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I just recently found an old mix CD from 8th grade that had Insects by Oingo Boingo on it. I was going to use it in a movie I was making.

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 16 September 2004 07:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Thomas Dolby produced Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout. End of argument.
