Cathy Davey - Something Ilk

On Regal, touring in support of the 22-20's, i.e. probably going to slip right under the radar as another mediocre student-pushed act thingy...

Which is a shame because she really has got something here. 'Clean And Neat' is particularly fantastic in a stomping kind of way, but so is 'Come Over', and the rest of the album is really good too in ways I can't quite describe just yet. The fact that 'Save Button' is a song about PC's being rub that somehow also manages to sound really good must count for something...

But anyway. No mention of her on ILX at all. Is this cos we reckon she's shit (she's a singer-songwriter from Dublin, so I'm guessing Ronan's a bit of a no) or cos we just haven't heard of her?

boring sub pj harvey - the type of artist that 6 Music gives a green light to.

Depressingly correct.

boring sub pj harvey

Umm, howso? I don't really know very much PJ Harvey, but I really can't see many/any comparisons between the two...

sorry can't remember any specific tracks, but that is the artist that i referenced in my mind whilst listening to 6 Music months ago.

Average artists get easily dismissed and quickly forgotten.

She's not average though, is the thing. But unless you hear the music you'll never have any reason to think otherwise, which is what I find annoying.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 10 October 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Swygart is of course right as far as "Clean And Neat" goes. That is a remarkably fine little bit of chugging indie pop glory.

Her music is OK, but nothing remarkable. I guess it's a nice break from all the Avril lavigne and Ashley Simpson type female vocalists.

But why are female artists always compared to PJ Harvey? (or sorry to make it a bit off topic) in a similar way, why are most guitar bands compared to Radiohead, even when they sound nothing like them?

But why are female artists always compared to PJ Harvey?

Yes!

She's got this song called Reuben on her new album which I love quite a lot today.

My mam played it to me in the car. I put it on repeat.

I say Mirage era Fleetwood Mac with Rumours era Stevie.

Not quite that fantastic but witchy west coast pop all the same. Acoustic guitars sound like candy floss.

But why are female artists always compared to PJ Harvey?

they are also compared to Kate Bush - as is Cathy Davey. This has made me loth to check her out, for fear she actually sounds like Tori Amos.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

i know very little by Tori so cant confirm/deny your fears, but the new album is a very up listen, with an almost happy vibe throughout as opposed to the soul scraping a la laura marling.
inspired lo-fi styled production/arrangements make the album a lot more interesting than i expected.
