The darker and more reverb and echo drenched the better.

THERE IS NOTHING IN THE WORLD THAT SOUNDS LIKE THAT

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Monday, 11 October 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

doesn't sound exactly like keith hudson, but there's a song called "bag a wire dub" by king tubby that's pretty insane. there's one part where i think he just smacks the reverb unit with his hand, and it completely overdrives the whole track.

For some more brilliant dark psych dub, you should definitely check out Hudson's "Playing It Cool and Playing It Right".

A cursory search also shows it is rated very highly on ILX.

Here's a good place to ask about this. I have "Pick A Dub" as a CD on the UK Blood & Fire label, and it sounds like ass. It's mastered from an extremely scratchy LP. Is this the best version available? (Maybe the only one?) Maybe the master tapes were lost, yeah, but is the fucked-up vinyl copy Blood & Fire used for their transcription the best anyone can do? The music is of course amazing, but I do wonder if there's a better way to hear it. Does anyone know?

Jaloopa, Tuesday, 12 October 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

If you've got broadband, Dr. Dick's Dub Shack is pretty good.

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I have the Blood & Fire version, which is the only cd version. I never thought the sound quality was particularly poor, esp for rare 70s reggae. Sounds good enough in my car, particularly the bass. The hi hats could be more sizzle-y and the snares could snap more, but there's definitely much worse cds quality-wise in my collection.

Get Prince Far I's Cry Tuff Dub Encounter Chapter 3.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the sound quality of Pick A Dub is pretty great (esp. considering how crappy a lot of rare Reggae/Dub stuff sounds.) I was pretty sure it's transferred from the original master tapes (I know the tapes for Flesh of My Skin, Blood of My Blood are long missing, but I thought that Pick A Dub's tapes existed and were used.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

You're probably right. It's been a couple of years since I listened to this CD. The sound quality bothered me way back when, but now I'm wondering if I was just imagining it all. Only one way to find out, so I'm going to give it a spin right now! I'm in a Keith Hudson mood after reading this thread. Thanks!

Jaloopa, Tuesday, 12 October 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh by the way, I whole-y recommend Brand (the dub version of Rasta Communication) to fans of Pick A Dub.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Is "Brand" in print though? I've never seen it...

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I see used every couple of months at Amoeba, I don't know if Pressure Sounds let it fall out of print or not though.

Trojan is going to put out in November a double CD of Keith Hudson production and originals, and will include the great 7" dub "satan side", a track even better than those on "pick-a-dub". This compilation, i have seen the tracklist on Trojan site, look unmissable for Keith Hudson fans.

They should put out one of their nice box sets of Keith Hudson! I don't know where this dub fan is, but in London you can get their 3-CD Dub set for £6.99 at HMV at present. They may still have their insane special HMV 'Ultimate Trojan Dub Box Set', which contains the Dub, Dub Vol.2 and DJ sets, nine CDs for £6.99! (150 tracks, not the 450 bizarrely claimed on the back of the box.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe if you smoke enough, you start hearing triple.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

That Trojan set looks great! (Even if a bunch of it duplicates Keith Hudson & Friends.)

I don't think Trojan has the rights to enough Hudson to make one of those 3CD things though sadly.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate how people think you have to smoke stuff to like dub or vice versa

Derridadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

You have to like dub to smoke stuff? Does anyone really thinkt that?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

But do you have to smoke dub to like stuff?

Bimble (bimble), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It helps

Derridadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't smoke and love dub.
i'd reccommend play it cool play it right by keith hudson as well, nothing quite like it, skeletal, odd and funky.

degreg, Tuesday, 12 October 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I finally got around to listening to this and my socks have officially been knocked off. It took me forever to decide whether I wanted to get it on vinyl or CD.

Bimble (bimble), Monday, 25 October 2004 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
i read a blurb in Wire last week about some new re-issue of an album that keith made before Pick a Dub... does anyone know it's name? have you heard it?

poortheatre, Friday, 16 March 2007 06:18 (nineteen years ago)

BRAND, i believe. not heard it but have a copy reserved.

Stormy Davis, Friday, 16 March 2007 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

new reish on Pressure Sounds

Stormy Davis, Friday, 16 March 2007 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

Nuh Skin Up, I think.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 16 March 2007 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

Both of those were after Pick A Dub. Entering The Dragon preceded it, that might be what they were talking about. Brand is awesome btw. Have not heard Nuh Skin Up, but it's on my list.

Alex in SF, Friday, 16 March 2007 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

BTW Trojan's boutique label Trojan Fan Club (which Entering the Dragon was released on) is really good.

Alex in SF, Friday, 16 March 2007 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

Nuh Skin Up is apparently previously unreleased stuff. We got it in at the GR offices but I immediately mailed it out to our reggae columnist, who promptly shit himself.

unperson, Saturday, 17 March 2007 00:48 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think that's correct about it being unreleased (unless you mean on CD.) I think it was just exceedingly rare like most of his post-Rasta Communication LPs.

Alex in SF, Saturday, 17 March 2007 00:57 (nineteen years ago)

Okay that didn't work. It was on Joint International apparently: http://www.roots-archives.com/release/310

Alex in SF, Saturday, 17 March 2007 00:57 (nineteen years ago)

So, is Nuh Skin Up any good?

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 17 March 2007 01:07 (nineteen years ago)

Have not heard Nuh Skin Up, but it's on my list.

Alex in SF on Friday, March 16, 2007 2:46 PM (3 hours ago)

That said I'm pretty sure it is. The album it's a dub of From One Extreme To Another is quite good.
