are they sampled?
if so,what are they sampled from?
it really is an incredibly beautiful piece of music
for some reason i always imagined the vocals were sampled from some 1930's german singer or something, not sure why

robin (robin), Thursday, 14 October 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like to know too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 14 October 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

mrjosh (mrjosh), Thursday, 14 October 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Google says the original is Daliah Lavi, "Vielleicht schon morgen"

Jeremy (Jeremy), Thursday, 14 October 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

1971!!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 October 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

rough google translation of a few of the lyrics i could pick out from those jeremy linked to then:

Wir hören ein Singen im Raum
Singen im Raum
Singen im Raum
Wir fliegen so weit wie noch nie

und mehr als nur ein Wort
und mehr als nur ein Wort

Wir machen aus Stunden ein Jahr

We do not hear a singing in the space
singing in the space
singing in the space

we as far as ever before

and more as only one word and more than only one word

We make one year from hours

jed_ (jed), Friday, 15 October 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Wir fliegen so weit wie noch nie

we do not fly as far as ever before?

jed_ (jed), Friday, 15 October 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

We fly further than ever, I think

or more literally

We fly so far as never

Magic City (ano ano), Friday, 15 October 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

We've never flown so far?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 15 October 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

and is it more at flying "high"?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 15 October 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i love "we make one year from hours" !!

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 15 October 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

also, "we fly so far as never" is great even if it's wrong

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 15 October 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i so want to hear this Daliah Lavi!

can someone soulseek?

jed_ (jed), Friday, 15 October 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to hear the remixes.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 15 October 2004 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
I have the Daliah Lavi song on slsk if anyone wants it. I ripped it off old vinyl so the sound quality is a bit rough. User 34534563, folder So Weit Wie Noch Nie.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Monday, 15 November 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

jeremy, i would love to hear this but i don't have slsk. if you have the time and the inclination i would love it you could mail it to me! colinohara at gmail dot com. cheers.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 15 November 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

No problem, sending now. lmk if there are any problems with the file.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

cheers - no problems at all!

jed_ (jed), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Jeremy!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

wait! Where'd you go!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Back on in a few minutes...

Jeremy (Jeremy), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Jeremy or Jed, would one of you mind forwarding it to me?? Thank you!

adam... (nordicskilla), Monday, 15 November 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i will do so right away!

jed_ (jed), Monday, 15 November 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

wanna pass the love along to me adam?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 15 November 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll forward to you from here.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 15 November 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeremy (Jeremy), Monday, 15 November 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

ooooh please send this to me!

Kornél Kovács (Kornél Kovács), Monday, 15 November 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

me too, please, someone (adam?). tobygee at gmail dot com.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm...jeremy, i salute you!

(thanks in advance, i'll check slsk later tonight)

but i think the translation to "Wir hören ein Singen im Raum"

is... we hear singing in the area, but i could be wrong - long time since i last spoke a word of german.

youngn, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

toby - sent! Kornél, I can't send to your address because hotmail has a 1 MB limit on attachments.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

send to me! send to me!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure if I'll be on slsk much until December because I'm near my monthly data transfer limit -- my ISP is going to start capping my connection speed soon if I don't ease up on p2p. If anyone with a more reliable connection can share it on slsk that'd be great.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer - sent!

Jeremy (Jeremy), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank You!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Wir hören ein Singen im Raum,

Wir jagen die Monotonie,

Wir machen aus Stunden ein Jahr,

Und Mondschein aus unserem Haar,

Wir fliegen so weit wie noch nie.

-----

Thank you for compelling me to go through that exercise - my curiosity and latent German language skills needed it.

nader (nader), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Ger: Wir hören ein Singen im Raum,
Eng: We hear singing in the room,

Ger: Wir jagen die Monotonie,
Eng: We hunt/chase the monotony,

Ger: Wir machen aus Stunden ein Jahr,
Eng: We make out of hours a year,

Ger: Und Mondschein aus unserem Haar,
Eng: And moonlight out of our hair,

Ger: Wir fliegen so weit wie noch nie.
Eng: We fly farther than ever before.

nader (nader), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the German pronunciation of monotony (i.e. mO-nO-tO-nEE).

nader (nader), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

aus could/should be: from

Ger: Wir machen aus Stunden ein Jahr,
Eng: We make from hours a year,

Ger: Und Mondschein aus unserem Haar,
Eng: And moonlight from our hair,

nader (nader), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW: "Mit Dir" lyrics:

Ger: Von weitem erklingt Musik
Eng: From far music rings out

Ger: Ich/Dich wünsch mir das Glück mit Dir
Eng: I/You wish me luck with you

nader (nader), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks, jeremy!

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

This German girl listened to my copy of "Hush Hush Baby" and told me that it's about a girl who likes pot and the title is a pun (on hash). Is this true or have I been tricked?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

It certainly sounds like it could be "Hash, Hash, Baby"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks jeremy! this is great

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 18 November 2004 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I like "Mit Dir" even more - so what other Jurgen Paape or Paape-like things do I need?

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 18 November 2004 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

There's such a distressingly small amount of Paape stuff out there (apparently he focuses on running the Kompakt shop??), and seemingly nothing like these two tracks.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 18 November 2004 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

well, "weiche zaune" by modernist/justus kohncke on kompakt100 is sorta similar'ish. i like it a lot

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 18 November 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently "Weiche Zaune" is about dreaming of fences! Is this true?

Kohncke's stuff does come closest I guess, although its chorus male singalong-ishness seems to come from a different angle to Paape's fragile grainy vocal loops. Even though "So Weit Wie Noch Nie" has quite a few different vocal lines it doesn't ever coalesce into a song for me, there remains that sense of the past floating through the present, like two radio stations from different moments in history somehow intersecting.

Wasserman's "Fackeln Im Sturn" is sorta Paape-ish I guess, albeit darkside Paape.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 18 November 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't Dennis Quaid make some kids film where a father could talk to his son thirty years or so in the future using some magical transistor radio?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 18 November 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I think that was me.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 18 November 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently "Weiche Zaune" is about dreaming of fences! Is this true?

i think so! i played this for a german friend. she was really confused and said something about soft fences crossing the room, or something like that.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 18 November 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

My goodness, this track, this track, this track.

Has Jurgen Paape done much else that comes near this, because I haven't much cared for anything else he's done (not that I've heard all that much of it).

mehlt, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 04:18 (eighteen years ago)

nothing's come near it, not that i've heard

jergïns, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 04:22 (eighteen years ago)

mit dir is basically the same trick but just as good

deej, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 04:57 (eighteen years ago)

Such a brilliant song.

Anyone want to send me the original? I am dying to hear it (markr-at-pitchforkmedia.com). Thanks if anyone can help out!

Mark Rich@rdson, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 05:06 (eighteen years ago)

He put out two 12"s last year that ended up being amongst my favorites for 2007: Nord Nord-West and Speicher 47. It took the better part of the year for me to come around to them, though, since they sound nothing at all like "So Weit Wie Noch Nie" or "Mit Dir". Definitely check out "Fruity Loops #2" if you haven't already. What a track!

lou, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 12:41 (eighteen years ago)

This is the most played track on my iTunes: 50 times (which doesn't seem like a whole lot, but I'm someone who's v. careful not to overplay songs lest I get sick of them).

jaymc, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

I played this night before last in my living room!

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

can someone upload the original? i couldn't find it on soulseek

jaxon, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

(Has someone done that for jaxon yet, because I have it right here...)

kenan, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

I believe that this track is the main reason that Total 3 gets so much love over other very worthy Total volumes.

kenan, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

woah. strange. i just got it from 20jfg blog not 2 minutes ago. so go there if you're wanting.

andrew m., Tuesday, 25 March 2008 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

This is the most played track on my iTunes: 50 times

lead track on that erlend oye dj kicks -- makes perfect sense. I wish that CD didn't have those 2-3 tracks in the middle (you know, before he starts singing smiths songs, which I love love love) that are Whoa Nelly That's Silly and make me break out in hives.

kenan, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

I don't like it as much as when it came out

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

kenan. please send to info at robotsinheat.com

thanks

jaxon, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

oh, i already send you a webmail. Ok.

kenan, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

oh, went to spam.

i actually meant the Daliah Lavi, "Vielleicht schon morgen" version, but thanks.

jaxon, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

oh. I guess we should both go to 20jfg blog.

kenan, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

nope. that's the jurgen paape version also

jaxon, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

Its a different version to the one on Total 3 though, different singer.

bidfurd, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

Also check the wonderful "wait a minute is that 'Can You Feel It' by the Jacksons"-ness of his "Cream" off Total 6. Highly recommended.

matt2, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

I have a 224kbs version of it, and I don't know if those who want it have gotten it, but it's here.

mehlt, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

please may i have it? if you mean the daliah lavi vers that is

s1ocki, Saturday, 5 April 2008 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

I have no idea which it is, i's not the same version as in the erlend oye dj kicks.

mehlt, Sunday, 6 April 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

i had this but it's gone awol. i'll have a look through the backup discs i made before i had an extra hard drive to see if i can find it.

jed_, Sunday, 6 April 2008 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

that would be great.

mehlt but it is the jurgen paape song you're talking about, not the orig?

s1ocki, Sunday, 6 April 2008 01:03 (eighteen years ago)

I have no idea which it is, i's not the same version as in the erlend oye dj kicks.

Shit! That's the second time this week that I accidentally wrote 'not' when clearly it shouldn't be there at all.

it is the same version as in the DJ Kicks mix. Sorry about that.

mehlt, Sunday, 6 April 2008 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

all i've been able to find from daliah lavi is her vers of "morning has broken" which is pretty gorge i gotta say.

s1ocki, Monday, 7 April 2008 02:40 (eighteen years ago)

You should hear her doing "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover." Got it if you need it.

tvdisko, Monday, 7 April 2008 10:17 (eighteen years ago)

I've uploaded it on the internet, I can email the link to whomever wants it.

mehlt, Monday, 7 April 2008 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

hey tvdisko, hook me up!

mehlt once again i have no idea what song you're talking about!

s1ocki, Monday, 7 April 2008 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

(actually tvdisko i was just about to inquire of you re: this)

s1ocki, Monday, 7 April 2008 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

I have a Dalida comp somewhere, but I gotta got through heaps of unorganized LPs to dig it up. Will send you the Dalida cut, which I actually do have ripped, later today.

tvdisko, Monday, 7 April 2008 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

awesome!

(tho you're mixing up daliah & dalida)

s1ocki, Monday, 7 April 2008 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

this song has paled a little

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 7 April 2008 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

No sorry, it is Daliah I've got, not Dalida. Was bleary-eyed when I wrote that. Track found. Sent to your gmail acct.

tvdisko, Monday, 7 April 2008 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

It's So Weit Wie Noch Nie, By Jurgen Paape, the version that's on Total 3 (I'm pretty sure), the same as which appears on Erlend Oye's DJ Kicks. Not identical to the youtube clip (the mix is all different) but the same track otherwise.

mehlt, Monday, 7 April 2008 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

four weeks pass...

is the daliah lavi still required?

jed_, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

id like it if youve got it
