Ever found a (good) surprise record inside the sleeve of a secondhand record purchase?

Apologies if there's already been a thread like this...

Because my roommate just got a 1970's French instruction record and hidden inside the sleeve was a red vinyl 78 RPM jazz 7" with a Dave Brubeck song on it, which I thought was great...I also found a 7" with the theme from Where The Action Is inside a Herman's Hermits record recently.

In the "I took it home and the wrong record was inside!" department, one time I was furious to find a Doobie Brothers record in my Captain and Tennille sleeve. Also, the last Chad and Jeremy album I bought had the West Side Story soundtrack record inside the sleeve, which was a slight disappointment (but Chad and Jeremy aren't THAT good anyway).

Similar experiences?

Are you a hipster, by any chance?

That was so incredibly idiotic that I cannot even summon a proper response.

Nothing that great, but I bought a used copy of The White Album recently and there were some pot crumbs in the gatefold.

I recently looked through a bunch of waterlogged LPs at an outdoor flea market. I would've bought a particular gatefold if it didn't contain...

DEAD MAGGOTS IN THE SPINE.

More on topic: I once bought a Cerrone LP for its incredibly creepy cover, then found a not-very-good-at-all Sheena and the Rockets LP inside when I got home.

I bought a Tasalvanan Presidenti record for $1 and got the first Cymande album inside instead. I'd never heard of them at the time, but it's a great record. I also bought a record by the Polish band Exodus that had a 45 by a group Kapitan Nemo inside; I was really excited about finding it/them, but never got to hear either, as someone from my job at the time tossed them in the trash sometime later during my shift. That's got to be one of the best records I've never heard. How could it not be? They were called Kapitan Nemo, for Christ's sake!

I bought Todd Rungren's first Runt LP once and found a soul group called The Presidents inside (LP title: 5 - 10 - 15 - 25 Years of Love, or something). When I brought it back to exchange it the clerk gave me a "what are trying to pull" look but let me get another one.

And yes, I used to consider myself quite the hipster.

I found a T-Rex best-of inside a charity shop Don Mclean purchase.

A sandwich bag with a little bit of ancient pot leftovers. I don't remember what album it was, but it was, of course, a gatefold.

Sorry. Misread the thread title.

I don't really know what the connection between hats, hipsters and this kind of squirrelly record-buying is.

I have never had a good surprise. I got John Denver's Greatest Hits II inside the sleeve to I.

My friend did, however, carefully press his pubes into a record before giving it to charity.

When I write "my friend", this does not mean "I" in this instance.

I picked up a stack of 7 inches in blank sleaves and found Stevie Wonder doing Blowing in the Wind and the Crystals, Da Do Ron Ron.

I bought Protection by Massive Attack on vinyl several years ago and Blue Lines was inside instead.

I bought a copy of Husker Du's Flip Your Wig many years ago. Pulled out the lyrics sheet and could see that someone had written all over it and was pissed until I realized it had been signed by all the bandmembers. The record was scratched up though.

My wife came home from a yard sale with an album for me. Some James Taylor thing that induced a polite "oh, thanks". "C'mon, you might like it" said she, so I obligingly took out the record and it was The Byrds Greatest Hits. She knew it all along. Whadda ya know, I married a cool person.

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It's funny, I just picked up The Byrds Greatest Hits the other day and inside was a Bob Dylan record. I mean, I'm disappointed, but really it could have been so much worse. Like Dan Fogelberg or something.

So Jim, maybe I have your record sleeve.

mikef (mfleming), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 08:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh the record is "Another Side of Dylan", which I'm scared of because I've definitely heard sides of Dylan I didn't enjoy.

mikef (mfleming), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It just occurred to me that that sounds an awful lot like an extremely foolish swipe at Dylan...

mikef (mfleming), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

At a jumble sale, I bought the Elvis album "Rock and Roll" on HMV for 50p, to fine Rock and Roll Vol 2 inside. Many years later, I found a copy of Rock and roll vol 2 with the Vol 1 inside for £5. I thankyew.
