Q-Tip has a guest spot. Uh-oh.

Please, for the love of all that is holy, please do not let this be as bad as the albums Fatboy Slim and Prodigy released this year.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 12 November 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you may want to keep low expectations on this one, Nate.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 November 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Meaning?

a) you're just plain skeptical ('cause I am)
b) you think "The Golden Path" is indicative of their current sound (pessimist, but a legit concern)
b) you didn't like Come With Us (understandable, if not entirely an eye-to-eye thing)
c) you don't like the Chemical Brothers (feh to youse)

I think if they steer away from Britpop people (exception: that Franz Ferdinand dude, maybe) they have a chance to remain listenable.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 12 November 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, there's two b)s. thumbs up! I'm guitarded.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 12 November 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Their remix of "Slow" is great but I fear that The Chemical Bros have slowly evolved damaging prejudices and assumptions regarding what albums should be. I mean, even leaving quality aside I find it difficult to imagine them making an album in the form of Dig Your Own Hole now - eg. having three or more no-nonsense dance tracks in a row.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 12 November 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Just plain skeptical (esp. after hearing enough of the other two Big Beat legends' albums from this year.) But maybe they'll pull a switcheroo.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 November 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

DAMMIT THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH THE PRODIGY ALBUM EXCEPT FOR "Spitfire" IS BORING.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 November 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Im looking forward to this.. 'the golden path' is definately something to worry about, but its mostly like a one-off kinda of scenario thing for their greatest hits comp.

still bevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 12 November 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Well equating it with Pa-fuckyouintheassforlikingbetterlivingthroughchemistry-ville is on some dirty low down shit but the Prodigy record seems like it's half-finished and has wrong vox in the wrong places and why do you put Twista on an album and then drown his voice out like that ferchrissakes people

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 12 November 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Early word is that it's a pretty good record. Now, that's coming from people in the band's camp, more or less, but you weren't hearing those types of things from the Prodigy people last spring (or at least I wasn't).

LoopDeLoop, Friday, 12 November 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Thing is, if Chemical Bros do realise what their strengths are, they're actually very well placed to make really great and current-sounding stuff. I mean, they were rocking the exact sort of in-vogue ideas about early nineties acid revivalism on Surrender - if "Hey Boy Hey Girl" was released now it would probably be just as huge as it was in '99, if not larger. The sort of things that have always characterised their best work - hyper-maximalist dance tracks with lots of different ideas flying about, an unabashed willingness to use obvious dancefloor tricks but in unexpected ways, an ability to frame vocals in a manner that is at once songful and tracky - these are all tactics that the public are very receptive to in 04. And it's not a huge jump from the "Slow" remix to what Tiefschwarz or Freefrom Five are currently doing.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 12 November 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The Prodigy album is painfully ott shite.

I agree with Tim, to an extent, anyone who says the Chemical Brothers are irrelevent is something of a clown. "Nude Night" and the Kylie remix show just how capable they are, and I'd like to think that outside of the limelight somewhat they could make an amazingly SMALL intricate acid house album, no guest vocalists, no epic album closers, no hiphop influence, nothing but hi-hats and crazy Chems sirens and whooshes.

I don't like this track with Q-Tip bullshit though!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 November 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Surrender sucks balls except for two key tracks.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 November 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

(The other three albums are fantastic, though.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 November 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, why do I love your taste in artists, but disagree with you so much on what constitutes their best work?

Jedmond (Jedmond), Friday, 12 November 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Those two key tracks of course being "Side 1" and "Side 2" (xp)

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 12 November 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

it just strikes me this minute, wouldn't it be GREAT if the Chemical Brothers made a whole album under a super secret alias? and released it on Get Physical. haha!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 November 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, didnt Howlett used to do that Mystery White Label pre-release routine to throw the purists off?

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 12 November 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

PALOOKAVILLE IS AWESOME MOTHERFUCKERS EXCEPT FOR THAT "SLASH DOT SLASH" SONG WHICH SUCKS AND THE COVER OF "THE JOKER" WHICH SUCKS TOO BUT THAT'S IT ALL THE OTHER SONGS ARE GREAT!!!!!!!!!

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 12 November 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Goodness, I suddenly just realized I still haven't heard any album of Fatboy Slim's other than the first one. Weird.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 November 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

New Fatboy and Prodigy albums are both really quite bad, though in different ways. Like Alex said, I'm keeping expectations low for this one (though I really, really liked "The Golden Path" and the "Slow" remix is also pretty good). I just can't allow myself to be hurt again by these big beat clowns.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

10 to 1 odds in favor that they do at least one track grimey or dubsteppin' just to justify their hipness.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Friday, 12 November 2004 06:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"Goodness, I suddenly just realized I still haven't heard any album of Fatboy Slim's other than the first one. Weird."

But you've heard the singles, right? = you're not missing anything.

most alarming thing about The Golden Path is that it was awesome live when done by the Lips alone. when Chembros production makes your track sound dull and classic-rockish, the boding is in bed with a cold compress on its forehead.

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 12 November 2004 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet anyone any money they won't do anything like grime or dubstep. Name your price. What a moronic comment.

Golden Path was shite but the B-side was really good. And the Chemical Brothers have not been big beat in quite some time, is it really that hard to actually distinguish between the 4 or 5 big dance acts? Surrender wasn't even Big Beat and that was released in what? 1999? FIVE YEARS AGO.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 November 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The Electronic Battle Weapon series of tracks has been great so I have pretty high hopes for this one. Especially, as Tim points out, because the house scene is in pretty much the ideal place for the Chems these days.

I want them to go back to making albums that were constructed like DJ sets (the first two) rather than classic rock album (the last two).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 November 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

heard a great, presumably new, track by them at Glasto - had a crazy spangly guitar bit that didn't fit with the beat going through the rest of the track

their micro/minimal stuff doesn't do much for me but i expect the album will be heavy on that to reflect current trends in club/dance music

i still think Surrender was largely excellent and Come With Us is really fine apart from the boring Orton and Ashcroft tracks.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Was that the new one that sounded like New Order Steve? The track at Glasto? That was ace.

I think the Orton track on Come With Us is amazing!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

they were on the right track with "Denmark" off Come With Us, but generally Come With Us was a good record I thought.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Was that the new one that sounded like New Order Steve? The track at Glasto? That was ace

it actually sounded like the entire Kill Bill soundtrack mashed up and condensed into a few minutes, from my sketchy memory. i thought apart from that they were far too predictable at Glasto, a large chunk of the set identical to the '99 one (which in '99 WAS the best thing ever mind you) but that's the way it goes eh

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought they were ok, it didn't feel as crazy as other times I'd seen them perhaps.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

'Denmark's intentionally dated sound has always lost it points with me for some reason.
As for the newie, I still can't get over the fact that the Chems still can't quite name an album. I already own one Push The Button, thanks. But 'Galvanise' (the new single) is a great title.

Dan, why do I love your taste in artists, but disagree with you so much on what constitutes their best work?

Because you're Jed Raggett, obviously.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah no way will they do grime or dubstep. It's not like they ever dabbled in jungle or 2-step when those styles were big. If anything their magpie dabblings on a sonic level have tended towards a perverse populism - britpop, trance, tribal house etc.

"I think the Orton track on Come With Us is amazing!"

Totally agreed. It's like New Buffalo with added ecstasy!

Hystereo (Slam)

ha ha - check yo fax martian

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew that post would be a DJ Martian post from the second line.

Now all we need is to have Dan come in and make a list of Chemical Bros tracks that do or don't do something or other.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

he says Kling, i say Klong, the whole thing is then called off

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Martian, didn't Ian Pooley just release a new album?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

correction, I meant to Soma not Slam !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i misread and thought you were suggesting Hystereo were Slam so apologies

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i am referring to a possible studio album for Ian Pooley not a various mix compo.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Hystereo on Soma

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cagedbaby - new name to me !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

just noticed this from the Soma site:

Kidderminster-born Ewan Pearson has been making records since 1996

so he's NOT French! so he IS Rex The Dog!

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cagedbaby - new name to me !

You have to remove the "The".

(Southern Fried artist, has own website, ends in 'co.uk')

So Steve WILL be COMMITTED!

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 12 November 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Hystereo's album has been due for so fucking long!

They re-enrolled in college this term!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 November 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

why the dislike of q-tip working with the chemicals. it could be good.

splooge (thesplooge), Friday, 12 November 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno I just think they should move away from that side of things, dance and hiphop don't feel very close at the moment.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 November 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a pretty bad cliche, unless Tip does something radical and completely different to 'Breathe And Stop' (seems highly unlikely)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

What was the last thing Tip did that was LIKE "Breathe and Stop"? Isn't that part of the problem with his post-_Amplified_ work?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 November 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd completely forgotten about this Kamaal The Abstract thing

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

why would he do something like breathe and stop? he has about 435 other songs to choose from!

splooge (thesplooge), Friday, 12 November 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

(mega-xp) My priorities are plenty straight. Underworld are boring and New Order are old.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, because "old" is the same thing as "bad".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

IMO Come With Us is fucking transcendent, light years better than Surrender (don't care much for "Hey Boy Hey Girl" myself) and way more advanced than Dig Your Own Hole. And good call on the Orton track, Ronan. I usually just turn it off before the Ashcroft track.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 13 November 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Richard Ashcroft the UK Lenny Kravitz?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 13 November 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm fairly sure I've listened to 100 Days Off more than I've listened to Come With Us but for some reason my expectations of the new Underworld are far lower than the Chems album.

I know artist albums aren't really the point but seeing Hystereo and Vitalic on Martian's list did make me very excited (but only if they contain 12 tracks as good as Winters In The City and La Rock 01, which I realise is unlikely). Also Tiga really needs to get his act together and release an album before he becomes hopelessly unfashionable.

I maintain that, two years on, Medicine8's Ironstylings remains my favourite house album of the past few years, there's a directness and lack of fannydangle about it that just does it for me.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 13 November 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose a Rex The Dog album is wishful thinking, right?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 13 November 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry Dan, but "don't trust yr own judgement, listen to MEEEEE" posts irk me and my only natural response is like-minded cementheadedness.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Saturday, 13 November 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Iron Stylings is no way as good as any of the mix albums. And I guess to be honest on every level I feel the Mayer or Superpitcher albums more.

Having said all that, I think the Hystereo album could be great. The b-side to Winters In The City is even better.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 13 November 2004 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

IMO Come With Us is fucking transcendent, light years better than Surrender (don't care much for "Hey Boy Hey Girl" myself) and way more advanced than Dig Your Own Hole. And good call on the Orton track, Ronan. I usually just turn it off before the Ashcroft track.

woah woah woah woah woah woah....woah....let's not go nuts heere.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 13 November 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

So Astralwerks sent me spam today along with a streaming link to the new single "Galvanize".

I think it's a little weak and forced. However, I'm imagining it would sound *really* great sped up! Like +6 or higher!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Battle Weapon 7 is going to be the b-side, and it fucking rocks! (in a get physical style!)

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's pretty decent. Surprisingly subtle, and has a pretty nice future-Chic cast to it. That "my finger is on the button" bit sounds a bit clumsy though.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Thursday, 25 November 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm. During the better part of the 90s I hated electronica, and now I want it to come back. Strange. But, after all, if all the R&B and hip-hop on the current hitlists were replaced by electronica, it'd be a huge step in the right direction even though neither have suffice melodic qualities.

And, btw, I liked both of the Chemicals' last two albums, so chances are I might enjoy their new one too.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 25 November 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)
