dj twat, Friday, 12 November 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah but i'm looking more for old ones from the 80s and early 90s, not the obvious ones made last week

dj twat, Friday, 12 November 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

zappi (joni), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

dj twat, Friday, 12 November 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Friday, 12 November 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

cool, didn't realise that.

what about early UK hardcore tunes, 91-92? not that many on that list. i'm thinking doc scott NHS, off the top of my head..any more?

dj twat, Friday, 12 November 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

OK - modified question - a bit harder -

What is the earliest known track to sample the amen break?

dj twat, Friday, 12 November 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The big hip hop track (I don't know if it was the first) to sample it was "Straight Out of Compton".

Name me a song that used a guitar in it

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 12 November 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

What? The guitar lick from "Amen Brother" or just a song with a guitar in it, period?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 November 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm thinking doc scott NHS, off the top of my head..any more?

it depends if you mean whether they used it without chopping it all up. chopped and reformed amen break was dominant in this music, from Shut Up & Dance (Derek Went Mad) to Ray Keith (Sing Time) to J Magik (Your Sound)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 12 November 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

just a guitar in it period. dude yr ruining my jokes

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

chopped up is fine...

dj twat, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Roni Size's "Brown Paper Bag" has guitars in it!

Kornél Kovács (Kornél Kovács), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

chopped up is fine...

then there really is too many to list

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

well, pick the best 5 then!

dj twat, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Everybody wave a big 'Hello!' to Alec Empire!

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

top 5 Amen tunes off top of head

Dance Conspiracy 'Dub War'
Doc Scott 'NHS'
J Magik 'Your Sound'
Splash 'Babylon'
Aquarius 'The Dolphin Tune'

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

interesting, you chose the same one as me!

not got all those, will hunt them out (it's for a wee project i'm researching you see)

dj twat, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

still no advance on 'straight outta compton' as the first one ever? i have a feeling there must be something more obscure that used the break first - maybe not tho.

dj twat, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

King Of The Beats precedes Straight Outta Compton i thought

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

after googling i see it was used on Eric B & Rakim's 'Casualties Of War' too

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i bet it was used in some less well known early 80s hip hop tho...

dj twat, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Amen Andrews to thread.

Graeme (Graeme), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

the winstons record is brilliant. i wonder if the group ever knew just how much their record had been sampled.

one of my longstanding dreams is to do an "invisible jukebox" of amen tunes with mssr. coleman.

applejack carney (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

If I'm correct, 2 Live Crew sampled it first with "Feel Alright Ya'll" on the Move Somethin' album (late '87/early '88).

All props to Louis Flores for putting it on Ultimate Breaks & Beats series in 1986.
