What's it mean when you go out and buy a record you thought was new only to check ILM and find that everyone already talked about it at least 6 months earlier?

with all the stuff i read here, on blogs and in magazines, it seems impossible to be as behind the curve as i often wind up. i.e., is there a thread where people post singles that are worth checking out and should there be? i'm think specifically club-wise... granted, my sets tend to be defiantly dated anyhow, and i'm ok with that.

"House of Jealous Lovers" for example?

well.. things like that, yes. but perhaps not thaaaaaat big. but then again, i didn't hear benny benassi's 'satisfaction' til about 2 months ago either, so there ya go. though i might have rather not ever heard it. i guess also that it has something to do with having entirely indie-rock oriented friends too. mostly so, anyhow. i guess, for instance, like how i didn't realize that areal wasn't new... i figured they popped up in 2004 and put out a bunch of shit all at once. but nope.

Some people are lucky with the staying ahead of the curve, some people are just continually unlucky. I don't normally find I have that much of a problem with the field I follow, but always find it funny to be behind on some things.

This has happened to me a few times actually -- it just basically means I'm old and in the way.

er what like this: Rolling 2004 Best Singles Thread ?

granted, it's just a list with no descriptions, so unless you know the artist (or the person who posted the suggestion and their tastes) it may not be terribly helpful to you

The leaked albums thread is useful for staying ahead -- a lot of the threads that you don't see until six months later were started four months before the music was officially released.
