Does rapping have to be practiced?

Like, okay, most people have to get in a certain state of mind or something in order to do it and sound good, right (obviously I wouldn't know first hand, but that's the impression I get)? Is it easier to get in the flow like that, to get just the right words coming with the right timing, if you practice at it? Do most rappers practice, even if they're not performing or recording, just to stay sharp?

Do rappers practice? How do you think all them dodgy albums with posthumous rappers get 'made'? Practice tapes. Probably more so than other music genres.

I lived with a rapper in my second year of uni, and I assure you that they practice constantly. I am of the opinion that the good rappers never have time to do half the 'hard' shit they claim to get up to on account of all the practicing they have to do.

lukey (Lukey G), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I guess it's obvious. It's just that people never talk about it and I never see anyone do it, I wasn't sure if some people just had it and didn't need to practice.

Notice how we only ever hear about mr mathers trials and tribulations as a young rapper, about all the hours he had to put in. Oh but if you are black you are just born with it, right? wrong! All you have to do is sit on the back of any bus when school lets out and more often than not you will hear kids practising.

lukey (Lukey G), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but he's just being honest here, surely? The idea that 'talented' people can just 'do' it is more 'exclusionist' ?

Why aren't there any "Rap Bloopers" records? People love bloopers.

What? the bit where they accidently swear?

Because they rewind the tape and try it again, taping over the blooper.

Where do you live, Dan I.? In Providence, you walk down the street for 15 minutes, tops, you'll hear someone practicing.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, it was just a question. I've not seen anyone practicing either, but I can tell it's one of those things you have to.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

why do you all keep using this word 'practicing'? Doesn't sound like hiphop slang to me. Is that why the idea seems foreign?

Maxwell von Bismarck (maxwell von bismarck), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you ever tried rapping along to something, especially something fast? It's hard. Singing's a lot easier if you're blessed with a decent natural voice.

xpost - 'practishizing'?

No, the part where they can't stop laughing because "showed my ho the burner, yo" came out as "cho my bo bah bo bo bo - Aaahahahahahaha"

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

there was a blooper of "tell me" by DelaSoul on a Swemix 12" of "Tread Water".

I wasn't jumping on him; I was genuinely curious where he lived.

OTM. Kids do it from the time they're six or seven years old. The voice and mouth need training just like the hands do to play piano. I'm sure the practice thing goes for writing/freestyling too -- you often hear about how rappers who are at it for many years eventually are able to write entire songs in their head.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

get on the el in chicago at around 3pm on a school day and you'll see rappers practising. although i think jimmy the greek was fired for pointing out that rapping just comes naturally to "them".

john'n'chicago, Tuesday, 23 November 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha

Warren G's "What's Next."

"See, rappers are descended from people who were bred to work in the fields; they have naturally-stronger thighs that help them support their uncanny flows."

Jimmy The Greek (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

See, the thing is, I'm waiting for someone to eventually say that anyway.
