how overrated IS the automator?

i'd say pretty damn preposterously overrated. hes only adored by the rock contingency because he has that rock texture and EQ in his beats. but between rehashing old over familiar hip hop loops, making vanity project after vanity project, and generally making leaden cum turgid beats, i dont think his concepts can save his actual productions. perhaps i just need to hear more of his work though, but nothing hes done has been as good as dr octagon. del didnt suit the beats on deltron although he was great, and the gorillaz project was hit and miss (the best thing was the remix of the single).

i'm the only person in the world who hated that Gorillaz remix

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

the gorillaz mix (Ed Case one i assume is being referred to ?)

was dreadful .. there were some much more interesting stuff from the G camp than that overexposed piece of rubbish ..

and yes i have to agree.

cos of Gorillaz i became somewhat impressed with Automator .. but recent respins of his Monkey mix reveals that i aint impressed anymore ..

i enjoy 'So How's Your Girl' - maybe he's better working with other producers

You wish.

Last time I liked him was 'Everyone Has A Summer They Like To Remember' feat. Kid Koala off Lovage. Terrible remixer at times. Gorillaz and Deltron still get a bit of spin round mine. Doesn't age especially well. Should play more violin.

is the 'Wanna Buy A Monkey?' mix any good?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

well its not a scratch fest (the sort of hiphop mixtape i prefer)

.. justa straight run through some Automator productions .. so adds little fun(k) to the mix .. some stuff is ok .. but i rarely spin it these days.

if this reveals anything ..

the handsome boy modeling school stuff is fucking great, technical means and musical trends notwithstanding. so elegant. it's like automator is the golden angle of hip-hop.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan in taking disproportionate amount of credit for Handsome Boy non-shocker.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

why, how do you know who did what on that album?

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

new Handsome Boy album has been getting some rather tame reviews .. not making me keen i have to say ..

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

it is great! luv cat power's song. luv mike patton's song. luv del's/barrington levy's song. luv it. very elegant and smooth. get it.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan sounds a lot like Prince Paul on his own stuff.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Similar production styles.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Automator is one of those guys whose productions are fine, but who produces a lot of really bloated crappy records with people I generally can't stand. The instru of that Lovage record is very pretty though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw him shopping for cds at bust buy. but so was i!

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

deltron 3030 was awesome though!

I like Automator, he's unique, not everything he touches is gold, but he's a fun producer. If only he's stick with one title, and stop creating a million and one identities.

titchyscheider, do you have anything postive to say about music? like, ever?

adam... (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Loveage was a hit but I never got into much of his other stuff (Deltron was awright). I would have to agree that Gorillas stuff was indeed ass flavoured.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:28 (twenty-one years ago)

chk out the new handsome boy modeling school, dammit. it's a grate record!

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"titchyscheider, do you have anything postive to say about music? like, ever?"

Haha, read the credits.

Dan sounds a lot like Prince Paul on his own stuff.
-- djdee2005 (ddrak...), November 23rd, 2004.

Kinda my point. For every track that sounded "very Automator", you had the "very Paul" tracks like 'Once Again', 'The PJs', 'Torch Song Trilogy', 'The Runway Song', 'Rock'n'Roll' and 'Megaton B-Boy 2000' (and the jazz touches are pure Paul, plus the remix of the Beasties, among others, sounds like a bit of both). Yet too often people will act as if Paul was never there.

A litmus test occurred in the same year S...HYG? was released when they each took on a track by Natural Calamity for remixing. Paul's mix is a thing of beauty and Dan's is ass.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

erm, the credits say produced by prince paul & dan the automator on all tracks except one, which is produced by the automator.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Not bad for a singing actress?
