Why didn't anyone tell me the theme to '80s PBS staple "Newton's Apple" was Kraftwerk's "Ruckzuck"?!

Because I wanted to find out what their first album sounded like and now I'm having flashbacks to Ira Flatow talking about space shuttles. (a href="http://www.ktca.org/newtons/newtonsclassics/classic26.html">Or cocaine.)

why doesn't someone tell ethan trife that one of his favorite bands has a song named "backpack" (which is what "ruckzuck" means auf Deutsch)!

Later on, though, they changed it from the original to a cover of "Ruckzuck". Ho hum...

Weren't there just sounds added to the original recording? I can't recall now.

No, I read about how it used to be the theme a while ago and the same article said that it was later replaced with a rather faithful cover of it.

Eisbär is obviously not German, nor is s/he very well acquainted with the language. FYI:

1. Ruckzuck can be roughly translated to mean "in no time flat". The common German phrase "Jetzt aber Ruckzuck!" is equivalent to the English "make it snappy!"

2. The German for "backpack" is "Rucksack" (NOT "Ruckzuck")

3. Ergo, Kraftwerk never had a song named after a backpack. That would be a bit silly, wouldn't it? (Well, about as silly as songs titled "Autobahn", "Telephone Operator", et al. Ho hum.)

Don't lie, it's German for "rockist."

LaRue (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 27 November 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It's German for "bling in quote marks".

Kraftwerk. On Newton's Apple. That is the most surreal thing I can imagine right now.

God I wish Kraftwerk had a song named after a backpack.
