If you could erase songs from your memory in order to relive that hearing-for-the-first-time magic what songs would you choose and why?

The Cure - 'A Hundred Years'

The intro just blew me away and set the tone for what was to become one of my favourite albums of all time. I still love it of course but I'd love to sample it again with a fresh pair of ears.

Bauhaus - 'Bela Lugosi's Dead'

It sounds very dated and not a little bit silly now but the first time I heard this was one of very few "what the fuck?! I need to find out more about this band NOW!" moments I've had.

Godspeed You Black Emperor! - 'Moya'

Simply the best thing they've ever recorded but I played it to death and now it's too familiar.

Love is all -Ronnie James Dio

Try not to copy each other's answers.

"Incredible" by M-Beat / General Levy, which was probably junglesploitation even in 1994, but how did I know? Wires, yips, and skips everywhere. We went to see Goldie before Timeless, and innocently assumed that he improvised all those sequences on the fly. Nah mon, just good at looking busy.

Pixies - "Debaser"

Time was whenever I heard the into guitar part it would send a jolt of electricity down my spine and set my feet on fire. Now it's just another song I like, dulled by over-exposure. :-(

I first heard Spiritualized "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space" at a pre-release listening party. I've never been so floored listening to an album for the first time. Actually, it was crazed excitement mixed with nervous panic because the album hadn't been released yet so I was facing the prospect of not being able to hear it for a while!

Fortunately, they gave away a few copies and my sanity was preserved. These days, it's only my 3rd favourite SPZ album, but I'd still love to relive that night.

Everything I've ever heard playing in a record store before buying the record

Thinking of a sister thread on music you wish you'd heard before you'd read bout it. I've still no idea whether or not I like Jeff Buckley, so sick was I of being witnessed to about him. I try to downplay my own enthusiasm now, knowing that that might meant the recommendations go unheard. It's a hard life.

"Unsatisfied" by the Replacements which did paralyze me the first time I heard it.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Sunday, 28 November 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Can "Oh Yeah"
-This is some seriously HEAVY shit, but not in the downtuned guitar way. Jaki is a superstar. Damo makes no sense. The guitar has an incredible tense feel--totally intense/heavy jam.

The first time I saw Lightning Bolt live was absolutely thrilling. I was fifteen, I think, and hadn't really had my head blown open by a band in a long time--I was listening to lots of terrible hardcore and bland indie rock at that point.

the chills 'pink frost', sounded like it was played by ghosts. it's the song that started me on my new zealand/flying nun obsession and probably changed my listening habits forever.

I Believe in You by Kylie Minogue.

this sounds like kylie dry humping Orchestral Mabnoueveres in the Dark while channeling Prince who's doing it doggie style to Dannii Minougue.

R.E.M. - "Orange Crush"

I heard this in high school for the first time, and I remember being totally blown away by the megaphone! I still love this song--I love in the "Road Movie" video when Michael Stipe does a backflip during the bridge.

No Trend - "Teen Love" (12" version)

This is still one of my favorite tracks ever. The first time I played it was on the radio because some guy requested it.

The Auteurs - "Showgirl"

The rest of the album is not so great, but when I heard the handclaps in the chorus I remember thinking my head would explode for joy.

Also David Bowie - "Heroes." Slowdive - "Alison." Johnny Cash covering "The Mercy Seat." All emotional songs that've lost a bit of their edge with time. And Pavement - "Shady Lane."

The Shape Of Things to Come - Headboys

New Years Eve at midnight - WBCN, 1979

I'd never head it before and it was so damn loud. Friends too wonderful. I haven't seen any of them in 20 yrs. It would be something else just to go back to that 3 or 4 minutes of elapsed time.
