Why are some people so turned off by androgynous voices?

The more time goes by, the more I love Frankie Ruiz's voice, but I know some people who can't get past his androgynous sound. I don't quite get what difference it makes. Is there some explanation that can be offered other than gender anxiety (which I don't think is the reason in most cases I can think of)?

(Oddly I recently read someone describing Oum Kalthoum's voice on her earlier recordings (say, pre-50s) as sounding like an adolescent boys. I've never gotten that impression.)
