"Knocking On Heaven's Door". Sure, Clapton's version was great, but the world certainly could have done without Randy Crawford and then Guns'n'Roses slaughtering the song. Not to mention all those amateur bands insisting on playing that particular tune. And, no, Gabrielle's "Rise" wasn't needed either.

"Across The Universe." Fiona Apple's version was pretty great. All other versions are just raping the corpse

How about "Imagine," while we're at it, to state the supremely obvious?

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 28 November 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

it seems like people like xavier rudd are trying to connect with an audience by unbeknownst to him trashing songs like wind cries mary.

damage control is an essential element of being a successful artist.

Is Smells Like Teen Spirit too obvious? (I'm thinking from young people, like a high school band).

Worst cover out right now is William Shatner's mutilation of "common People". It makes me wince to think of it...

Robin Goad (rgoad), Monday, 29 November 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"Yesterday" is the world's most covered song. However, few people have actually tried to turn their version into a hit, it is more like putting it on albums with "standards", plus all those elevator muzak orchestras playing it. The exception here being Wet Wet Wet, who did release it as a single, and their version did of course sink completely.

"Yesterday" is and will always remain a great song, but the world certainly doesn't need many more versions now, the original remaining the one and only that matters.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 29 November 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

This is presumably old territory, but didn't I read that "Yesterday" only rules in the West, but takes a back seat to, e.g. "Garota Da Ipanema" (sp.)?

Acme (acme), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Acme, you mean to say Brazil is not in the West? Or that "Garota de Ipanema" is big in Japan?
