Hermeto Pascoal: RFI (Etc.)

I bought Cerebro Magnetico and I like it, but it's not as good as I was hoping it would be. But I'm struck by how similar some of it seems to the things that Fred Frith was doing at the time (on Gravity and Speechless), and to the more chaotic end of the RIO sound of people who collaborated with Frith on those albums. Does anyone know if he was connected with any of those people, or is it more of a matter of what happened to be in the (outsider/progressive) air in the early 80s? He did work with Miles Davis on something or other, which might explain why he'd sometimes arrive at a fusion-like sound.

(I'm willing to try another Pascoal CD eventually.)

C'mon, we could barely figure out what MPB was! Or I coudn't anyway. And I have a tough time keeping Hermeto and Airto straight, but I think I know the difference now.

I don't know Brazilian music though, so I am counting on others. Someone here did post a little bit about him a while back, but I'm just surprised there isn't one fanatic. (But then, I am not smitten with him myself based on this CD, the first that I've heard.)

I'm not a fanatic, but I did just buy Slaves Mass and I highly recommend it. He uses a live pig as an instrument and for this he should be applauded. He also uses a live Flora Purim as an instrument and this also gets kudos from me. It's jazzy, it's out there, it's cool, it's Brazil! Or something. I dig it anyway.

I've never bothered with the recorded material. My love for Hermeto is based on seeing him live a few times and I'm a bit scared that the recorded experience might be disappointing. That may sound silly, but i just have my doubts whether the bits that i love about his live show would come through on record.

You may be right, J-Giraffe. He was touring the U.S. recently, but I missed him. (I don't think he played in Philadelphia, where I live. I wish the Kimmel Center would get a little more hip about its "world music"programming.)

i've wanted slave mass for some time... but in the US, it's hard to get any of his good stuff, from what i've seen.

i actually caught something on NPR recently about him. perhaps that'll help spur interest in a domestic release?

Re : the Frith connection. Listening to Cerebro Magnetico right now, it puts me in mind of the Aksak Maboul LP , 'Onze danses pour combattre la migraine'. The guys from AM went on to do something with Henry Cow after that album. Cerebro Magnetico, is, I think, wonderful - the best of the half dozen or so solo records I have by him, and perhaps even better than the Quarteto Novo LP.

Wayside Music (in the U.S.) carries a few Pascoal titles (including Cerebro Magnetico).

He was on tour. I think I may have first heard of him on ILM, actually.

I think Aksak Maboul was on one or both those Frith albums I mentioned, as well. I'm glad someone else hears the similarity.

there was an store copy somewhere and the wide range of noises caught my attention. it's one of those things i've thought about buying but i don't get excited spending $25 on a cd. i'm on a budget.
