Lost Sounds: Blacks and the Birth of the Recording Industry, 1890-1919

Is this sort of the academic version of Stomp and Swerve? Has anybody checked this out? It looks kind of interesting, but at 600+ pages is probably too much for someone like me who is only marginally interested in early American pop music. It's a very attractive looking book though.
