scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Is John Mayer still their sole music writer?

Huk-L, Monday, 29 November 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

So, am i supposed to listen to these while drinking brandy for a snifter as I untie my Bill Blass shoes and apply Brut cologne?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

their 5 albums you've never heard thing: the go team, dungen, the go find, lo borges, schooner. best comps: third unheard, the mice, left of the dial, candi staton. best reissues: clash, pavement, jeff buckley, jawbreaker.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

you are supposed to be listening to them as you adjust your 25,000 dollar timepiece.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

or hairpiece, i can't remember.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh, not bad. For some reason I couldn't really get into the Kanye album, but OK.

sleep (sleep), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

mmmm, the great smell of Brut

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

this arcade fire nonsense is getting out of hand

artdamages (artdamages), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

John Mayer writes for Esquire, not GQ, and he isn't their sole music writer.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I was surprised to see AF there too but... seriously, great fucking album, no? Meh, I think so anyway.

sleep (sleep), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i am reminded of something: http://informationleafblower.typepad.com/blog/2004/11/the_top_40_band.html

artdamages (artdamages), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, his columns that I've read online have made it seem like he's the only music writer in the world.

Huk-L, Monday, 29 November 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, really? weird. anyway they've got a guy named Andy Langer who does the main music column; Mayer does the sidebar.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a little thing about my blog in that issue of QQ, plus some nice little blurbs about United State Of Electronica and The Go! Team. Not bad.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

saw the Go Team, not USE! need to look harder obv!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I only started reading GQ this year actually, since Tom Carson jumped there from Esquire one issue into the subscription I got SPECIFICALLY TO READ HIM GRRRRR.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

> best comps: third unheard, the mice, left of the dial, candi staton. best reissues: clash, pavement, jeff buckley, jawbreaker<

wait, how can compilations have only one artist on them? confusing!

chuck, Monday, 29 November 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Jim Nelson, who became EIC at GQ this year (or maybe it was last?), used to do most of their music writing. Brian Raftery does a lot of it now.

I'd say that tip about your blog this month was pretty damn awesome, Matthew.

I love Tom Carson, and frankly, he's the best thing about GQ anymore. Although, for some reason that may be tied to the AWFUL redesign at GQ, Carson's columns haven't been as good as when they were over at Esquire. Not sure why you're bummed about being stuck with Esquire, Matos. It's one of the most consistenly great reads in the magazine world.

don weiner, Monday, 29 November 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Kanye ranks so high for the same reason that Jay-Z always does: Mainstream with high enough street cred....it's a good, solid album - but not a patch on Madvillainy....this list is surprisingly good

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

compilations . . . and reissues. READ, Chuck!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

(haha I'm even tireder than you, sorry)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorite thing about the Fluxblog blurb in GQ was that for once, the writer made a point of mentioning the emphasis on pop on the site. I get kinda get annoyed when people characterize the site as being an indie rock sort of thing.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 29 November 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

except for AC Newman and kinda Modest Mouse, that's not a bad list at all, I might have 3-4 of those in my own top 10.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Monday, 29 November 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

what surprises me far more than anything about this list is that Scott subscribes to GQ.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 29 November 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i like that alex in nyc namedrops 'brut' to signify swank stylishness

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 29 November 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I subscribe to lots of things, Ian!! I love magazines. GQ always has something good in it. Same with Esquire.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Ya gotta dig thru a lot of ads to find the good stuff though. and vanity fair, oof, don't get me started, it's like an advertising trade journal at this point.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

GQ have failed - they're not known for their music reviews.
there's not one cd i'm tempted to buy.
I've only heard of Lorreta Lynn and Scissor Sisters.
The only cds i've bought are
Britney - greatest
Robbie Williams - greatest
Kylie - greatest
Def Leppard - greatest

music boys, Tuesday, 30 November 2004 07:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll go these:
3) Madvillain - Madvillainy
8) Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans
with a perhaps for this one:
9) Scissor Sisters - Scissor Sisters

The Sufjan's certainly one of the albums of the year, but yeah whatever, I'm clearly not a GQ man.
