My end-of-year round up compilation 2004

Last year I made a quasi-chronological mix cd of everything I'd gotten into over the previous twelve months as a Xmas prezzie for friends). I was so pleased with the results I decided to try it again this year.
Overall I must say I've listened to and discovered more music this year than ever before yet the tracklisting is rather disappointing compared to last year's mix. Maybe it's a little 1-D? There aren't as many different styles on this year's comp and the mood is all very downbeat.
How could I maybe liven this up a bit? (Obiviously this may be an impossible question cos the comp reflects my personal and more memorable experiences over anything else). I really wanted to put some more varied things (Venetian Snares and Boredoms) but the tracks I like by them are either too long or too loud and wouldn't sit well on a comp. The Boredoms especially, should never be subjected to mix-tapery.
Also, what can you tell from the differences in the two comps? Would anyone care to analyse any shifts (or lack of them) in my tastes or comment on either compilation in any way?
(PS - there is no dance music on either comp because I included a second mix-cd of a dj set i did).
Also: Feel free to post any of your own end-of-year round-ups here.

i've been doing the same thing this year.

im finding it hard to narrow down the list of songs though.

i have a longlist of about 80 cut down from about 200.

I'm making X-mas comps this year, too. My problem is that all my friends have verying degrees of music knowledge, so I get stuck making lots of compromises in order to try and find something new for everyone. Plus, I always end up throwing at least one metal track on there which manages to annoy somebody.

That Spirited Away is from 2002, no? Put on some Hisaishi stuff from the new Miyazaki movie, Howl's Moving Castle.

And more Snoop Dogg.

darin OTM. If I put metal then it'll fuck up the mood of the comp but if I don't then I know people who will get annoyed. Also, there are a bunch of things like The Decemberists who I listened to a lot for a certain part of the year but I know each and every one of my friends would hate.

Stephen - it's stuff I've been listening to this year, not necessarily stuff that came out this year. Spirited Away came out at the cinema near me in very late 2003 and its dvd release was about Feb this year (I think) so I put it near the beginning of the comp.

Shit! I should really have put a track off of Real Gone by Tom Waits considering it was my album of the year. Sadly "Sins Of My Father" was way too long for this comp and it's my fave on there (yeh, I know I dissed it a while back but I love it now).

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I've been down that Decemberist road myself. Although I snuck in "July! July!" one year without any complaints.

I might go so far as to customize my comps for each of my friends this year, but I don't know...

18 brian wilson - i'm in great shape / i wanna be around

You need to get the new Smile album, pal. It's only very short but it's a really nice bit of music.
